The Trustees of the Philadelphia Gas Works tent to Councils, yes terday, a long report, in answer to a resolution requesting a statement ot the permanent im provements made with tbe loan of $1,01)0,000 authorized by ordinance ol Councils, of Decem ber, 1864, The report contains the following statements: Improvements at the Twenty-Bltth Ward Woiks consist of lime kiln, 21 ieet square; re tort house, 68 by 250 feet, with capacity for 240 retorts; purifying house, 60 by 116 feet, with tnosetsof pumpers and 2500 feet condensing pipe; exhaust and boiler house, 48 by 86 feet, aud one steam engine and two boilers; one station meter of 41,01)0 pounds weight; tar well ol 8600 barrels capacity; 684 feet' of railroad; pipe connections, paving, etc., all of which cost $868,238-42. Tbe improvements at the Ninth Ward Works consist ot a retort house, 30 by 137 feet, with 70 retorts, a two-story coal stove house, 75 by 240 ieet, costing v,y3fbi. Dr. Gross, the dis tinguished Professor of Surgery in Jefferson Medical College, delivered a lecture to the pro fession last night, on the life of that eminent American Surgeon, the late Dr. Valentine Mott, of ew York. It was a rare intellectual treat. Tbe ball of the College was crowded to excesj. Among those present we noticed eminent mem bers of the legal and clerical professions of this city, besides tbe son and grandson of Dr. Mott, of New York, who were introduced to the audience at the close of the lecture. .Professor Gross beld his andience spell-bound for two hours, i It was a fitting and able tribute to the memory of one of America's noblest and greatest sons. Mokcment to Gkxeral Birney. A number of the friends of tbe Jate Major-General Davll B. Birney have procured a beautiful marble monument, to be erected over tbe remains of their friend. It is twenty-two feet big, of Italian marble. The base, four and a-half feet sqiaie, ol American marble, is heavily moulded, and contains a raised shield, oyer which is thrown the American flag. Tbe cap, which is elliptic, is embellished on the four sides with the corps badee, wreatb, etc. The whole is surmounted with a handsome urn, erowned with a rUing star. AMUSEMENTS.
