To the Editor of the Pittsburg Commercial: There is a statement going the rounds of the newspapers giving the number oi bayonet and sabre wounds received by Union soldiers during tbe late Rebellion. This statement, of course, has emanated Ironi the Surgeon-General otlice, and is no doubt correct, as far as his official records show, as furnished by regimental, brigade, division, and corps snrgeous were con cerned. But, alas 1 there were maay bayonet thrusts elveu to our men that were never re corded In the Surpeon-General's office. Who that bas travelled over the sanguinary fields of slaughter from Mechanicsviile to Mal vern Hill, has not seen the stripped bodies of our men, btabbed. wantonly staboed, by the passing Rebel bOldterj? or the gash of M)nie chivalric Rebel officer's virgin sword in the lair skin of his dead enemy? I have seen all this, and much more. But there are two bayonet wounds which I fear have never been included In the list, and which I now wish to make public two mortal bayonet wounds, given by Roger A. Pryor on the second battle field of Bull Run. We will take the Rebel Gene ral's statement of the case, as related to Dr. Armstrong and myself, at the house of Mr. Van Pelt, then used as a hospital for our wounded. It is as follows: "I was taken prisoner by tbe Union forces, and after delivering my sword and giving my word not to attempt to escape, I was conducted to the rear, or rather given in charge of two joung soldiery mere youths, belougiug to some Eastern regiment: I was supposed to be conducted by them to tbe rear, but cvervthlng seemed contusion on the field. As we sauntered along 1 kept np a bridle con versation with them, and soon sained their confidence so much that they relaxed their care over me, and permitted me to trudge along as best suited the convenience of tbe uneven ground; this was what I wanted, for I had determined to escape if possible, and the opportunity soon appeared. 1 bad ascertained ironi the youths tnat their muRkets were not leaded; we were chatting very pleasantly, when suddenly I picked up a rifle with fixed bayonet (hundreds lay over the field), and before my guard was aware of my iuteulion, I ran oue through the body, who seemed to expire in stantly, and the other, Doctor (pointing to my patient who lay before him on the floor), I ran through the belly, and he'll die, too." Whether he died or not, I never ascertained, as I was ordered by my Division Surgeon, Dr. J. King, to take charge of the wounded at Stone Store on the battle field. These facts were furnished to tho President and Secretary of War, at the time Pryor applied lor his pardon two years stgo, and no attention was paid to them. K Donnbllt, M. D.
