the great masterpiece of that talented woman.
Mrs. Lander has, however, sncceeded, and In
her rendering of 'Elizabeth, 'Jiirided new lustre
to the honors which have heretofore graced her
career us a great artiste. In the first at, rather
uncertain of the success which she hoped to
win, she did not rite fully to tbe height of tbe
character she attempted to portray; but In act
second, in the love scene between her and
Essex,' the heart of tbe woman, struggling
between love on one side and ambition and
England on the other, called forth stormy
applause from the well-filled house. The queen
forgot royalty In the woman, the woman rushed
back from love to the crown, and the two forces
clashing, trembling, both in the struggle for the
mastery, eave room for every etlort of tho
actress. We pronounce Mrs. Lander's "EIIbv

in many points."
