On Fnt. One of the cars of the Union line,
wiille coming down Seventh street, Saturday
even.rifr, about six o'clock, and when just above
Ibemut (Ureet, was discovered to be on fire.
1 he discovery, of courte, created a stampede,
the passengers making thctr way at rapidly and
es best they could out of the vehicle. It seems
ttat the lamp, wh'.ch had just bten lit, at the
conductor's end, was overturned by the motion
ot the car, and the IHaruos quickly communi
cated with the woodwork around. The car was
not more than haU iull, and though there was
not the slightest daaeer, the excitement for a
while wai great. One lady was encumbered
with a "child to aims," and another somewhat
larsrer hanging to her dreis. In her haste to
net out, the elder of the little ones was thrown
upon the cur floor, atd enlivened the scene by a
erica of jells, In which amusement he was
joined by his younger relative, who by some
miraculous uld succeeded in clln.lni to Its
parent's neck depite that parent's evident dls
reaard of it while looking out lor her own sifety.
The conductor rniiiidrd us of the boy and tho
tuni ng chip. He nobly remained at his post
when ali but he had lieo," and. with the asmat

mastering the oaring flames.

A Bloody Duel Death oh Two Notorious
Characters. One who took part in the affair
gives the Titnsville Herald the following ac
count of the way in which society was rid of
two desperadoes of some local celebrity:
7 Julesbnrg appears to have become the resort
of numerous "hard cases" from the oil region,
as well as other sections of the country, and
among them was the notorious Tom Quirk,
of Petroleum Centre. He escaped from the
Allegheny Penitentiary, and alter reaching
Juleuburg, .and setting his stakes for business,
he visited Chicago and procured eight Jeze
bels, with whom he returned to Julesburg,
and established a concert saloon, or, in other
words, a "free and easy." Among the mem
bers of this interesting household was a woman
known as Margarot Snyder, who became
attached to a Julesburg hotel-keeper named
Chanfrau, formerly of Pithole. The
woman deserted Quirk, or Clark, as
he was there called, and weut over to
Chanftau's. Quirk called upon the latter,
and declared that he must give her up or re
imburse him (Quirk) for having paid her fare
fioni Chicago. This Chanfrau consented to
do, but upon the following day, when Quirk
demanded the money, Chanfrau refused to
Pay. Quirk then deolared that he would fl')ht

Quirk was the better man, and he would only
fight him with revolvers at fourteen paces

Of West Hickory was selected as Quirk's
second, and another named MoCart, from
Bait Lake City, performed the same service
for Chanfrau, while Tom Dili ou was elected
referee. 1 he parties Immediately went to the
suburbs of the town, where the distance was
measured off. The principals then went to
their position!, and aoa was Allowed to Uke,

handkerchief, both men fired, and both fell

killed, being shot through the head. Quirk
was shot through the body, and lived only
