8 A WOOD-SAW1NQ CONTEST. HaTl b4 JCxcltlsR Cmti ait Lafayette m 36 AmkUnrt Saw 3tt Cord. jY0mtf lAfayette, (7nd.) Journal, JVov. 3. Tie wool-iwin tournament about which o aanch baa been iaa and written cam J off yester day, according to announcement., and was a complete and decided inccesa. It was tome thin wore-tt was tbe biggest thing that ever ocurred in tbe State, or even .n the Weat. The day waa beantllul, though a )HUe windy, with vat enough of unshlne and cbill to make wood awing almost a pcsitivo luxury. Tbo affair was witnessed by not lese tban one thousaud person , aa near as we conld Judge, though people kept almoatconatantly coming and eoinir, on foot, boraeback, and in earringei and wagons. Tho erecesslou lormed in the following order: 1. La'ajctte 6ilver Cornet band; 2. Young Men's CbriBtlan'' Association, nine, as follows: Olout-1 lhoroDfor, J. W. Graham, N. G. Jloover, Frank M Leverine, U. H. FlytiD, William T. Under wood. Edward Hall- G, Claj Smith, Bnd Thomas EmerfOn. 3. IIoosler.Dase Ball Club, 'ntBC.tM follows: Mesera. Martin, Tinney, Hood, llrowtJ, Gallagher. Jennrnt, Rhoads, Wnlecnber ger, aad Krutz. Unknown (Fenian) niue, as i,.-.-,..irop. nTnrdocW. Conwav. llaeeartv. llearv. Swift, Manaban, Connell, Grillin, an1 Downey. 6. Independent nine, as follow iweve Ellsworth, Watkins, Jen. wiihibc .: ton, Weeper, Snyder, Inskeep, and V t ; Varl & Hatcher's three mu' ,oCorI . i.C..-,nrk 7 ritlrensa' .o dray, loade.i with saw-bucks. 7. Citizens a ' n fnn. Pres d friends on foot. The line of march was, as previously arransed. so BOUttt umiwrii drtb, up Fourth to Main, up Main to Sixth, v t Bixtu to llrown, up iirown W Winiu, up .h t KllKftheth. nnon wliicii svrtei, i, innr.tion with Ninth, the wood was stored in four bcautilul piles t 7ilne cords each. The sawyers marched .ib their saws at what the tactics call a nent 'boulder sbilt. The lloosicrs were dresed in the unilortn peculiar to tbe club to which they beloop. The other boys were garbed in their woikiug clothes, and all wore that martial and detenriued look so noticeable in those wiio have resolved "to do or die." Arrived at the ground, some little time was consumed in ar rtiueiDK tbe prellmiDarieB. The principal or firlniary contest being between the lloosicrs and he Youpg Men, those two organizations tossed np for the choice ot piles. The former winning the first eaotce. selected tbe pile at the south nd of tbe west side of the lot, tbe others taking the north pile on tbe same side. There was some little dlderence in the quality ot the wood furnished for the contest, but none In tbe measurement, except in that tor the indeprn dents, which was nearly three-quarters or a cord abort. A portion of it was also soft wood, and much easier to saw than either of the others. In tbe other three piles tbe quality was about equal, though, if anything, the Unknowns bad a little the rnopt bard wood. Everything tains ar ran pod, and tbe sawyers in pusition, at the tap of the drum and music from tbe band, tbe fun commenced amidst the almost deaieuing shouts ol the spectators. At juHt iweniy-nve rxiinuies aner iu otiock eacn man rprang for bis stick stmulutneously, and each saw commenced at almost tbe same instant. It was indeed a grand sight, and such a one as was never before witnessed hi tbe country. Ihirtv ix wood-saws all rasping through the wood and splinters at the same time some of the boys going in with all their might and strength, other taking it slow and easy, after the manner of experienced Jcnignts ot tbe saw and buck. The friends of each party rollied around and encouraged them by tbeir presence and uounxol. while others stood back and ofleted bets at odds In favor of their winning. There waa a percepti lle difference noticeable in the sawing of each vntll the first hour or hour aud a half had passed, when tbe piles of those who took it slow and easy began to grow gradually larger. At a little alter 12 o'clock the labor was buh pecded for thirty minules, while the lawyers partook of a lunch and hot otfee, furnished them by Messrs. Taylor A Son, Of tho Bramble House. Alter lunch the labor wan again resumed, without intermission, until It was completed. At intervals duritg the day buckets of water were pasxed around to the aawTers, and boys stood ready, bacon-rind in band, to graase tho saws. At five minutes past 2 o'clock tho Independents complete J tbeir last lick naviug maae inoir nine cords (three Quarters abort) in Just turee Pours ana leu minutes. The result whs bulled with deafening Cheers. Miss LydiaBrockenbough then steppe i lor ward and decorated each of the nine with a red ribbon, taken from her own dress and cut into suitable leneths on the spot, then and there. Ai precisely half-past 2 o'clock the Unknown nine completed their job, having made the time in three hours and thirty-flvo minutes. We heard considerable complaint from various parties that several of this farty slighted their work in only sawing he wood once in two, whereas the rules required that it should be sawed twice. ior ur own part, we only noticed one or two in stances ol this kind. Towardj tbe close of tho eBtest, and after tbe Independents had finished their Job, the friends of the Unknown stepped in and rendered them efficient ssrvice by placing the wood upon tbe bueks and holding it while It was sawed. Taking the contest through be tween tbe Unknowns and Independents, and considering ibe latter's short measure and soft wood.it was yeiy nearly an even thing with them. At precisely thirty-seven and a half minutes past 2 o'clock tbe Hoosier Boys sawed their last stick, making the time In three hours auod forty-two and a half minuteB, thus beating the Young Men fully ten minutes. As the aaain contest was between these two nines, this 1 result was bailed with deafening cheers, and the boys modestly received the congratulations f their friends, a large majority of whom were f tbe fair sex. The friends of the Toting Men, seeing they were lairly beaten, kindly Hepped In and assisted them with their ten or ttfieen minutes' remaining work. Taken through out, tbe contest was a very severe one, and one which fully tested tbe enduranee and bottom of tboe engaged in it. Tbe result ii also one cal culated to cheer the heart of many a poor person, who, during the cold and bleak winds of wlter, cannot help but bless the brave heart of those who have to nobly contributed to their comfort, if not to their very existence. The pment results may be summed up thus thirty ix cords of nicely sawed wood, seventy-two blistered bands, thirty-two lame backs, and thirty-six pairs of sore legs. At first no admls Ion fee wa charged, but some of the ladies connected with the Benevolent Society passed Ibe "platter," and succeeded in raising no inconsiderable sum. Afterwards a persou was Ut.oned at tbe entrance, who insisted upon a ltot ten cents for going in. The sum thus Talsed for entrance must have amounted to veniy-ftve or a hundred dollars. The whole affair closed up with an auction sale of the awe donated for the use of the Hoosiers by Messrs. Falley & Beach, five quarter burrels of sour donated by tbe millers of tbe city, Messrs. w2,,rV,flpe7 ,& 1Cobler. fMln Forestman, MrVfi nrwtee& Jenkins, and Potter, Daggett A bv ?aS"i La 'lapidated saw-buck donated "nginmed k 1 knof wuo- Mr- p- B.
