TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH miLADELPIIIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 18(37.
THE KING OF THE CRADLE.
Draw liack Uie cradle curtain, Kate,
WhilrJt watch and ward you're keeping,
Let's Bee the monarch lie in state,
And Tiew him whilst he's Bleeping,
lie smiles and clasps his tiny hands,
As sunbeams in come streaming,
A world of baby fairy -land
lie visits whilst he's dreaming.
Monarch of pearly powder-puff
Asleep in nest so cosy,
Shielded from breath of breezes rough
Iiy curtains warm and rosy;
He slumbers soundly in his coll,
As weak as one decrppH,
Though King of Coral, Lord of Hull,
And Knight of Bath that's tepid.
Ah, lucky tyrant 1 Uappy lot 1
Fair watchers without number,
To swetly sing beside his cot,
And hnsh him elf to slumber;
"White hands in wait to smooth so neat
His pillow when it's rumpled,
On conch of rose-leaves, fresh and sweot,
Not one of which is crumpled !
Will yonder dainty, dimpled hand
tize, nothing and a quarter
E'er claFp a sabre, lead a baud
To glory and to slaughter f
And, may I ask, will thone blue eyes
In baby patois "peepers"
E'er in the House of Commons rise,
And strive to catch the Speaker's f
"Will that fair brow o'er Hansard frown,
Confused by lore statistio 1
Or will those lips e'er stir the town
From pulpit ritualistic f
Impossible; and yet mayhap
Though strange, quite true it may be
Perhaps Nero once fed on pap,
And Ueales was once a baby.
Though rosy, dimpled, plump, and round,
Though fragile, soft, and tender,
Sometimes, alas I it may be found
The thread of life is slender 1
A little shoe, a bitten glove
Affection never wauting
The shattered idol of our love
Is all that is remaining.
Then does one chance, in fancy, hear
Small feet in childish patter,
Tread soft as they a grave draw near,
And voices hush their chatter;
'Tis small and new, they pause in fear,
Beneath the grey church tower,
To consecrate It by a tear,
And deck it with a flower.
Then take your babe, Kate, kiss him so,
Fast to your bosom press him !
Of mother'B love what does he know ?
Though closely you caress him.
Ah I what a man will be that boy,
What mind and education 1
If he fulfils the hope and joy
Of mother's aspiration.

Moyauensiko. Yesterday afternoon the
Committee on Prisons paid a visit to Mova-merji-insr
Prison, and were ttaowu through it by
Mr. Perkins, the Superintendent. Owing to the
crowded condition ot the Institution, it was re
solved to memorialize the Legislature for per
mission to enlarge the prison ground, by taking
that portion ol the Parade Ground extending
as far westward as the line of S. Twelfth street,
and using it tor prison purposes. The better
method of couveying prisoners to and from the
prison was also considered, as many ot the
prison vans, as at present constructed, are do
ftc ive and objectionable.
It is proposed to subdivide them into two
apartments, whieh will in a great measure tend
to remedy them.
The appropriation for the coudn? year was
only partially considered, and will be the sub
ject of a future conference, lhe amount ap
propiiated for prion purposes for the present
year was $145,012, but a lees amount will be
needed for the coming year. Although Moya
mensing is so greatly crowded, the best order
and di cipline prevail, and the Board of Inspec
tors pive all necessary attention to the health,
cleanliness, and comfort ot thoee committed to
tit Ir care.

AMUSEMENTS.
Tnn Academy op Music win crowded last
evening with an elite and Intelligent audience,
to witness Madame Adelaide Uistori's wonderful
personation ot the haplcbs "Queen of France,"
in Paolo (Jinconietti's new tragic play of Marie
Antoinette. The fault of the work is its elabo
rateness Bnd want of true dramatic couoord
ance. It is written In seven acH instead of live,
and resemble Schiller's WaUemtein (in thirty
nets), without the power and classic beauty ot
that great work. The sceucry, imported Irom
Itsly, is mimniticfiit and artistic, the "grand
hair'iu theTullerlusbeintrthebeijtandmost laitU
fully executed, butrather highly wrought in color
a ter the manner of Telbin's "drop scenes.''
The dresses were appropriate, and those of
Mnio Uistorl the richest we have ever seen.
The play was carefully acted, mid the tableaux
finals were rendered with much prsce and pond
taste. The music incidental to ttie new play
was admirably n udered by the orchestra, under
Pr. W. A. Cunnington. iM'me Uistorl per
formed her enoi mous role with an evenness of
pathos, paxsion, and womanly characteristics
that exhibited to the fullest detiree her remarka
ble dramatic in-ntus, and the applause wa
general throughout. This evening Marie An
toinette will be repeated, commencing at half
past 7 o'clock. On to morrow (Friday) night,
benefit ot M'mc Uistorl, when phe will appear
as "Melca" and "Lady Macbeth." Saturday
alternoon, Marie Antoinette.
At the Walnut Mr. J. B. Roberts will appear
in Louis Al, lor the la-t time, to-night. This
rote has been splendidly acted by Mr. Roberts
and he has been tendered the most generous
applause. To-morrow (Friday) night Mr.
Roberts will have a benefit, when he will
asf-umehis gieat ro'eof "Sir Edward Mortimer,"
and the dual role ot "Dei Franchi," in the Cor
sica. Brothers. Next Monday evening Mr.
Thomas J. Hemphill, the business manager of
the Walnut, will take his first benetit, upon
which occasion Mrs. W. (Jomeral will appear in
the successful operetta of tho Grnnd Ducltess of
Go olstein.
At tdk Alien Kohody's Daughter draws large
audiences. It will be phiyed this evening, with
Diss Kate Reignolds and the whole company in
the cast.
At thi Chesnut Mrs. D. P. Bowers will ap
pear apain as the "Queen of Scots" this evening,
in Schiller's play of Mary Stuart, in which she
has made quite a hit.
Fokepaugu's Great Combination Circus and
Menagerie is now exhibiting to immense crowds
every evening and Saturday afternoons, at the
"Skating Rink," Fifteenth and Wallace streets.
We are informed that the copy of the Greek
fr-lave aud Thorwaldsen's Gallery of Statuary at
Copenhagen will be repeated to-night, by re
quest, at the Assembly Building. Ah the
rMereopticon will be eontinued tor a short time
only, it will repay our readers to visit it. These
marvellous representations are so perfect that
one feels himself standing In the presence of'tlie
originals. An entirely new programme will be
ollered to-morrow evening.
