A large and cnthusiactlc meeting was held at National Hall, J-'orlieth street and Lancaster avenue, Twenty-fourth Ward, for the purpose of organizing a Grant Club. Professor Rboades was appointed Chairman, and P. A. Milhnian Secretary. Hon. W. D. It airbrded me pleasure to find my convictions of duty confirmed by those wbo aligned tbe cull, and I am here to ex press my approval of tde uomlnaiion of General Grant for the Presidency. Permit me to stale brlelly why I deem this a nomi nation lit to be made. It m not, gentlemen, because General Grant la, as we all know, an available capdl (late. I spurn the doctrine of availability. The Democratic party tried the experiment, and behold the bloody characters In whicn its epitaph la wrttleul Principles are vital and eternal. They create and invigorate party organizations, which, being temporary, aresuhject to tbe influence of time and changing circumstances. It is my purpose to follow principles in tbe future, as I have endeavored to do in the i ast; and you who remember the pride with which I abandoned an honored position In a triumphant majority, and assumed a aubordlnate one Iu the ranks of a despised and apparently boneless minority, will believe me when I say that I would rather fall with a forlorn hope defending my princi ples thun share any temporary triumph that might be achieved by abandoning the least Important of them. .Nor, again, am I iu favor of making Urant Presi dent us a reward tor his transcendent military ser-vl-es.
