Harness me down with your iron hands,
He sure of your curb and rein,
For I scorn the strength of your puny hands,
As a tempest scorns a chain;
How I laughed as I lay concealed from sight
For many a countless hour,
At the childish boasts of human might,
And the pride of human power.

When I saw the peasant reel

Gkakt Meeting in toe Tenth Warp. A
meeting of the Be publican cltlzeus of the Tenth
Ward was held lat evening Kt the hall, Broad
and Race streets, for the purpose of showing
their "preference for General U.S. Grant as a
candidate for the Presidency aud to form a
Grant (Jumpaicu Club. On motion of Sherilf
Howell, Hon. James Pollock was culled to the
chair, and Mr. George Freeman was selected to
act as secietary.
On taking the cbuii, ex-Governor Pollock said
that the object for which they had assembled
whs well understood. It was to form a Grant
Club for the purpose, of bringing before the
people that creat ami good man for the Presi
dency. General U. S. Giant. The party had
passed through a strucrle of late for principles,
which to them are considered for the good of
the Government. They had been defeated, but
the hour will come when their principles will
gain the ascendancy. While there are many in
this land who are worthy of the important
position to whith the putty seek to elevate
General Grant, still the Republican party wish
to raise him to this important position. He is
the man for the hour, for the nation, and the
world. With General Grant as their leader the
party will sweep the land.
On motion of A. Wilson Henszey, Colonel J. P.
Wetherill was chosen permanent President of
the Club. On taking the chitr he made an
address tbahking the Club tor the honor con
ferred upon him. A number of Vice-Presidents
and Secretaries, were also citron,
The following preamble and resolutions were
paesed:
Whereas, Loyalty and Republicanism are
identical, upou the' success of which depends
the fntirre peace and stability of our country,
therefore
Eesolved, That in General U. S. Grant we re
cognize the embodiment ot Republican princl
Tiles. an nrdent suonorter of the reconstruction
nolicv of Concrcss. a soldier whoso military
achievements have dazzled the world a truly

Hesolted, That we do hereby form ourselves
into a t rant Club of the Tenth Ward, and that
we wi'l each and every one of us use all honor
able arid proper means to secure his nomiua-
tiou aud election to uie riesiuency.

Fatal Result. Richard Tavlor. aeed 38
years, living at No. 630 Wilder street, who was
waylaid and badly beaten at Fifth and Eeed
streets, on election afternoon, died from the
effect of his wounds yesterday morning. The
deceased stated that his assailauts were com
posed often or a dozen men, who were armed
with clubs and knives. He stated also that the
person who was prominent ia the attack had
what appeared to him to be a tube inserted iu
the side of his nose, he iudcred tn r.rfi som
defect in or injury sustained by thai member.
The deceased at the time of the attack wus
passing quietly along and had no intimation of
the violent in'entious of the men. After com-
mittinc the offensA nil nf liia oisnilonii loft tha
ground and no arrest was made. Mr. Taylor
continued to suffer intensely from the wounds
until inu lime oi nis ucain.
The City Railroad. The railroad on Afar.
ket and' Broad streets belonging to the city, has
proven to be a profit to the city the present
year. Mr. John Bosler, the Superintendent,
reports that the receipts from October 1, 18GH,
to September HO, 1867. amounted to $16,8!)3-03,
and the expenses to $o2Gl'D8, leaving a profit of
$8031-05.

The likhl at Houthwest Ueor. Louisiana, has been
regulsrly exhibited since the storm, and will he con
tinued notwithstanding the severe damage sustained
by the tower.

to (Jovernment Piers at Chester, Pa., viz:
One set, in duplicate, for delivery at such points of
Slid Causeways and Piers, as may be required, some
three hundred perches, more or less, of foundation,
or one mau, two man and three man stone, for a
double-laced, dry stone wall, and some six hundred
or less running feet ot coping stone, with natural
faces, similar to that already Used iu causeways. The
coping may vary in thickness from u to 10 inches, in
wlrithB lrom 2-9 to 3-6. and In lengths from 3 to 6 feet.
All the stone furnished to be of a hard and durablo
quality, and ot Biich form as when laid to make a
strong and compact wall,
Proiosals will state the rate per perch of twenty
five cubic feet for foundation stone, aud per cubic foot
for coping, delivered on the premises, in such quanti
ties and at Biich times as shall he required.
A second set, in duplicate, for furnishing and de
livering on the Cnuseways and Piers all the filling
required. The material to be quarry dirt, earth, mud,
gravel, one or more of theee. The rate per cubic yard
ol each to be stated, and this rate to cover all ex
penses. Including putting the material In position.
A third set, In implicate, tor furnishing all the labor
and appliances necessary for repairing and building
the Causeways, Walls, etc., and for doing said work
In accordance with Instructions given. The work to
be well done, the front and back of wall thoroughly
lied together. All stones laid dry.
The proposals for labor will state the rate per pfrch
of twenty-live cubic feet laid In the wall. This rate
to cover every expense of preparing foundation
where necessary, ot building anew, aud of removing
and relaying portions ot old work. As far as practi
cable, the old materials now on the premises to be
used In the construction.
Materials aud labor will at all times be subject to
ilgkl Inspection and to rejection by agenls of the
L'nl'ed btates. All materials to be delivered and
labor performed by January I. 188.
Twenty ptr ceutum to be reserved on any part pay
ment made.
The general character of worn to be done, and ot
stone required, will be best understood by an exami
nation oi the premises.

persons, whose siicualures should be appended lo the
guarantee, and who should be ccrttlied to as being
good and sufliclent security by the United States Dis
