THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1867. A Wvlle Novt.l. In Ms new magazine iSf". 2'tiu Anthony Trollop e discourses of tbe pres. rit domination the novel In periodical literature. lie says: "A there are many critics of tbe literature of the day who declare tbat magazines are slmcst worthless brcauie they are filled wllh j adrtlnir. so are there others who are equally i ijioFrd to them, became none of them we lehcve not one Is now lobe found unpolluted tytbe ully enthusiasm of the romancer. The i iiltor, however, who would cater successfully lir tbe public, whatever tuay be hla own taote M.d Imlirnicnt In such matter, must provide that for his reader which bin readers demaud Hid will certainly obtain, whether he provide it, or whether others do bo. It niay da boldly asserted that no uiaea rinc couM live at present that refused to nyale iti Irlcrtrls fiom month to month with at h unt one serial tale, and that the mngnzknc which trvst to two mch works will fnre bettci than its neighbor which lruts only to one. Novels were indeed rct, but were not a necessity In every house hold as they are now. Nor can any one cay that the novelet w ill still be the preacher of the day when thirty years more shrill have passed over us. The poet may then be In the ascen dantor, more probably, the writer of the ceiei.titic esBy j or It may be that the booksel ler ol the day will And a volume of sermons from the pen of tome eloquent divine to bo tbo stock that moves ltsilf most quickly on his shelves. It is not probable that this present editor tdiould feel hinipclf called upon to quarrel with the pul lie tnte In this respect. It has been his humble, but not unpleasant task, as a man of kiters, to sine, in prose, lotg love-dittles for his readers, an ' i,r hag silnc them till the sinplng of i mem uas oecome a second nature 10 mm. lie, 1 has now pit topether another, which he will I Wsrhlo forth from month to month aililtvnnt Indeed composed w holly of love strains; a slight Ktory, in which he has attempted to describe how love and ambition between them may cause tbe heart of a man to vacillate and uiako his con luct unsteady. HIS CEL TAXEOUS ITEMS. Hints for Pedestrian. A 1'aris physician, Ir. l'bo bns, Las been Btulyiug afresh, tho causes of sore feet on tbe march, and the best means of preventing them. In addition to advice as to tbe shape of the boots, be recom miuds the repeated employment, during the march, of cold ablutions of tbe feet. Walkers, be says, should atop when they pass runulng Streams or stagnant water long enough to take off their boots and to put tludr feet in the water for a minute or a minute and a half. In inhabited places Vessels of water may be procured for this purpose, and the feet kept in till the sensation of heat or burning has disappeared. If any blister form, a thread of wool or cotton should be passed through it, and loosely tied. Thus the lluid escapes, but the epidermis is preserved a precaution by Which severe subsequent pain is avoided. Excoriations are best treated by a soft oxide of ?inc ointment (made with benzoated lard and a little glycerine). The shoes should be Boft and supple, although sufliciently thick. A dt zeu or two small nails in the solo, where it wears most, sullice to preserve it. The leather may be softened by rubbing a mixture of linseed oil and oxide of lead or of lard. Stockings should always be worn. Shrkwd Way oh Catching Thieves. The I'aiis papers reveal a new style of theft by which jewellers are losers. The thief enters the shop of a dealer in diamonds and pearls, and asks to Bee some small unset stones, lie is well dressed, and wears colored spectacles. The stones are laid before him, spread ou paper, lleiug very near-si;bted, as bis glasses prove, be id obliged to biiug bis eyes so near to tbe gems tbat be can pick them up with the tip of liis tongue, and be keeps them, in his moutb until out of tbe shop. If be fears detection, which seldom occurs, be swallows Lis treasure whence the slang name of "Swallow it raw," given to this class by the thieves' fraternity. One of them was caught tbe other day. The diamond merchant, put upon bis guard, said be had no Htiiall stones, but would have a large supply the next day. A policeman was . iu waiting: the diamonds were laid out upon paper previously impreg nated with an extremely bitter drug, which, when the thief put his tongue to them, acted so violently on hia sense of taste that ue in stantly rejected what he bad just taken. The policeman appeared, and tbe thief was taken in the act. Opium Eating is Ekglakd. Dr. Hawkins, of King's Lynn, baa published an alarming re port respecting the prevalence of opium eat ing in tbe fen country, iu Kncland. Oue Lynn chemiBt sells an average of one hundred aud seventy pounds of solid opium tn the year, besides correspoudingiuautities of laudauum. Indeed, it is said that half the quantity im ported into England ifl consumed iu Lincoln shire, Norfolk, and Leicestershire. The re onlt. is a ereat mortality of children, and a marked degeneration of the human race in those districts. An Old Miraclk I! epeated, "A rumor was current yesterday," says the Italia, ot Naples, of Septemler 19, ''that rit. In reierenre to impure drainage In the Tiver, it is stated "that much the lareest proportion of objectionable matter Is now thrown into the liver at Manayunk, both as town draluape aud refuse from mills, of various characters, and as this Is the hiphest point upstream where we find Impurities in lsrte quamitie floin into the pool, the first question to decide is as to the practicability of pieventlng this sewnue pollut ing the water In tbe river." The flow of the "Schuylkill has been set down at about 400,000,000 gallons per day, but during ten months of the year would probably be at least five times greater. The report estimates the available waters of the wholo valley of the river to be fifty per cent, of the annual rain fall, making tbe whole flow equal to ninety billion cubic feet a year, or an average of eighteen mil lions per day. It is suggested that this waste water could be made available by establishing P0i Is or lakes of storage at several points oil tho river, in which the superfluous waters could be kept for gradual use.
