CURIOSITIES OF PRUT COLLECTIOnS.
A writor in the Cornhltl, noticing the unpre
cedented prlco of I 5000 paid for nu etching by
February lait. adds some curious particulate of
remarkable collectious.
A BTOBI OF BEMDBAHDTi
About one of Rembrandt's etching we have
u i amuBlng story. He had eonc to spend a day
wUhtals eieat friend, Jan Si, ft burgomaster of
A! ttiev wero sitting down to
itoSfin .rrjnnt bad lorgoU,
rwl7h"he urSomHHWr that he wonld etch
Ihp view from the dininu-roum wmuu uuiuio
te wmnt wturiie.1. He took up a plate, tried
his etching-point upon it. eketctiel the view,
and won his bet. The engraving le a very rare
one. Baron Verutolke's impmsiou sola lor 17
IOj.j but he would be fortunate who could
secure a good Impression at that price now. "
DURER.
Of Albert Purer's etchings the most beautiful
Jb his "Adam and Eve." Some time ago the
finest known impression of this engraving came
Into the possession of Mr. Smith, the eminent
printseller. He showed the print to Mr. Ma
DerlT, who eagerly inquired the price which,
as tar as I recollect, was about sixty pounds
uterlinp. Possessing another impression already,
Mr. Mabcrly was at hrst not Inclined to pay this
large sum even for such superior excellence.
l)ay after day, however, he came to look at the
charming Impression, and at last said, "Well,
well, I must have it. But you will take back
my other Impression, won't you, and allow me
what 1 paid for U 15 f" " A'by, no," said Mr.
Bmith. "1 don't think that 1 cau do that. 1
won't offer yeu 13, but if you like, I will give
you 30." The value of Diner's engraving had
been doubled since Mr. Maberly's lormpr pur
chase. At Mr. Maberly's death his prize sold
for 65. Mr. Johnson's Impression, which was
no doubt, a fine one, broueht 40. Whut a
change from the price Durer himself tells us he
got tor his enpravini? in 1520 four stivers (four
pence I Kven taking into account the di (Ter
ence in the value of money in bis time and our
own, what he received cannot have amounted
to a couple of shillings.
MULLER.
F. Muller'i engraving of "Madonna di San
Sinto" proved his death. On taking a proof of
bis plate to the publisher by whom he was em
ployed, he yas told he must go over the whole
work again, as it was far too delicate for com
mercial purposes. With heavy heart he set
about his work, but It was too much for him,
and on the very day the proofs were taken off
from the retouched plate, he died. It letches
large prices now. At Mr. Johnson's sale, a "tine
proof belore any letters" broueht one hundred
and twenty pounds. The su rue 6 ini was obtained
lor Count Arcbinto'a copy in 1862.
CONTRAST OF PRICES.
In comparing the ancient prices of prints on
their first publication with the modern ones (I
nave already mentioned Durer's "Adam and
Eve;"' and Mr. Maberly tells us that Purer pur
chased Luchs Van Lejden'a "KoleLspeisfel,''now
worth, when in pood state, 60, for a stiver) wo
must not lorget the lmnrensely larger sums that
engravers are paid now-a-daja than what were
usual in former times. The artiat then was
of'.en bis own publisher; but even when he was
engaged by some other person, he received what
would bo considered at present most inadequate
remuneration. Woollett, for instance, a hun
dred jears ago, asked only fifty guineas for en
prating his ".Niobe," though Alderman Boydell
generously gave him one hundred. The price
at which ft was published was live shillines, no
difference being made between proofs" and
prints the subscribers being allowed to take
which they pleased. Contrast these prices
with those that ore obtained now. We
Will take an Instance from France. Louis
XIV commenced a "Cbalsogiaphie du Musee
Boyale," a series ot enirravings from pic
tures in the Louvie. The series is still con
tinued, and in 1851 the sum voted for this pur
pose was nearly 9000. Of this II. Dupont was
to receive 10(iG lor enpravmg Pi Veronese's
"Piliirinia of Einmaub;" and De Francois (the
artist eDg aged for Frith's "Derby Day'"), 1250
for Fra Angelicas "Coronation oi the Virgin."
When in 1&47 there was a similar commission
contemplated by the EnglWh (lovernment, it
-was said that the sum Mr. J. II. Robinson was
to receive for engraving '-Tlic liaising of Laza
rus" was 5000. A publisher will otten spend
seveial thousand pouncis In bringing out a first
class engraving. Ttie "copyright" aloue is a
inoet serious item. Landseer got lor the "Peace
and War," now in the Vernon Gallery, 2050.
The prices charged for the Impressions must of
course be in proportion. For Instance, when
Colnaehi published Doo's engraving ot the
"fiaibinir of Lazarus," there were 100 artist's
proofs at 20fguineas, 100 proofs on India paper
at 15 guineas. 100 proofs on plain paper at 10
guineas, 200 prints on Ind'a paper at 6 guineas,
whilst the prints themselves were charged 5
guineas each.
The same writer says:
The subject of engravine leads us na'.uraliy
to the sister subject of painting. No collecting
mania is anything like so popular or so exten
sively practised as that for pictures. They have
come to oe considered as inu'speoHauie articles
of furniture in every well-appointed bouse; and
It is no uncommon thing, in consequence, to
meet with a collector who talks and evidently
thinks much less of the gems that ornament
his gallery than oi the checks by which
they were secured. And how grossly tho
"old masters" are belied in inauy of these
collections! They had no more to do with
the productions to which their names are
appended in ail the splendor that gilt letters
can give them than the purchaser himself. But
If a man will order a tiauie flvo feet by three
and a half, because he has a spare corner of
iKbtse dimensions, he had better not inquire too
closely, any niore than in the case of a 8t.
Anthony's tootb, as to what animal it originally
belonged. Iu Loudon alone tbere are, I suppose,
sold every year ii'Ore pictures by the "old
masters" than fire left to us ot" their paintings
altogether. Let me mention two facts. luthe
year 1845 the nuruocrol pictures Imported into
England amounted, according to the returns of
the Custom House, to 14,0!1. In one month of
the same year there were tsold by auction in
, London alone, wittutit reckoning those Included
in furniture sales, though the number cf these
must have been considerable, 4G17.
The difference between the price at which
such pictures are acqnin d and those thy fetch
when brought to tbe hammer, is amusing. A
Laphael. ducUud lu the auc ijn room to uave
ct its late owner loon g iiaens, sells at 37
A Vorkoh're gentleman bequeaths twelve of his
pictuies to the National Gallery: they are re
jected, every one. The whole collection is
brought to the hammer; it had cost 30io- it
produces 150 about the vuluo of the frame
Nor is it only in Enfluud that a man sells a
horse for a gross o grem spnetar les. A French
collector insures lag Eullery lor H.339,600
francs. It is sjld some years alter wards, nume
rous additions having muntimo loeu made to
it, for 685,436 lruncs. Aud ouo cannot imagine
In these cases that there is aiv such possible
explana ion as in the cae of the Karl of Suf
folk's ten pictures lumo' "Kcce Homo"

from Charlton Park in October, 1856. and not
recovered till the early part of 1858, when some
of them had ueen naugiug in a small public

eucn very interior productions .
