THE DAIL.Y EVENING TELEG RAFH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 18G7.
CJJVJlCa COUNCIL AT LAMBETH.
C;i- Ktc
We are indebted to the editors of the, CWrfi
Journal for the following detail. rort of the
iroceedlngB of the F nAft11c&n Synod at Lam
Etn a courtesy all the more appreciated from
Ue fact that the Council bare shot out the
BKedTy,rth"'iuth of September, at the
Invitation Of the Archbishop of Canterbury, a
?remnlnBry meeting' of the Bishops of the
XnclicftnCommunlou w; held at the house of
iv,. i P O No. 6 Park Mire, Pt. J.tmes gtiect.
The Archbhop himself took the chair at
noon and ome thirty or iorty Bishops were
SSesent! about onc-thira of whom were Amen
Iin Amonz tbe last were the llishops of
Vo -. North Carolina, New York.
LouMana, Kho.le Island, Arkansas, and the
iVniJiftiit bubops ol Ohio and Indiana. The
meltZ was aWeibcr informal; none but
Vuboiw were pr.-8.-nt ; and no minutes were
k'Ine chief discussion the Mvelon latini?
four hours in all-was ia rcpard to opening
the proirritinnie lor the consideration of tho
Oolenso case. The metropolitan of Cape Town
aaiide a long and very able speech In laor of
this ceuree, as due to the truth, which has been
so ereatly outraged by Dr. Colenso; but objec
tions was made on the ground that every por
tion of the Anglican communion had already
condemned and repudiated Colenso. Both
kouecs of Convocation in Kuclaud, the Church
in Scotland, the provincial Synods In the colo
nics, nd the general convention ot our own
church, had all spoken, and nearly all unani
mously. Moreover, bishop alter b'bop declared
that tucy recognized 1 he deposition and excom
munication ol Coleneo iib perle. lly valid spirit
atly. The Bishop of Lincoln, for instance,
said that il CoIciibo precrntcd hinifflf to receive
the holy coinniunin. lie (the Bishop of l.incolu)
would uot minister it to him; iior would he ul
mit him to a beneHco in bis diocese, should auy
body be so unwise as to present him to one.
Other English bishops said the frame thinir; and
not on wiped a word to the contrary. The Bishop
1 Huron stood up manfully for the Metropoli
tan of Cnpe Town but thought the Ritualists
should be dealt with likewise. The Bishop of
liendon, though thinking that the llUuilUis
were reelly doing more harm in the Church
(that is. we suppose, making more rapid pro
gress) than the Colensoites, yet repudiated the
idea of the Council touching Vot subject, which
plainly belonged to each distinct Church to
settle for itself; and that branch of the subject
then fell dead. The Bishops of New York, ver
anont, Illinois, and other of the American
Itisbops were among the speakers, every one of
them fctand'ine tuanlully by ihe Bishop of Cape
Town. The Metropolitans of Montreal and New
Zealand did the same. Indeed, the perfect una
nimity on the subject was a delight to all. lhc
only difliculty was as to ihe leq.il validity oi Co
leuso's excommunication, according to the
laws of England: which ot course did not apply.
The meeting closed in the most excellent feeling,
the Archbishop of Canterbury having won gol
den opinions by his mingled cjurtcsy, dignity,
gentleness, and consideration,"
Tlia Fortieth Cougrcna.
The returns from the California election corn
plcte the list of members elect to the Fortieth
Congress, and we have now the means of ascer
taining the exact strength of each party in Con
f wi. The following table exhibits the political
complexion ol the House of Representatives, by
States, in the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Con
gresses: XV.V.VH(toi((ii. XL'h Oangvens.

3. The trial to be made in an open space, tho
safes standing the Uilelcue.su of one brlcu above
the ground, and the Hie made with dry wood
placed around the safes, and as hot as either
party may desire and to be continued nntl
one or the others fe shall fail; the committee
to see that the wood Is equally distributed and
the 6afes exposed Hllke to the fire; the party
whose safe fails first to pay the whole expense
of the trial, and the winning party to have the
safes after tbey are burned.
We will add that we are willing and ready to
go Into a trial of Safes with Messrs. Marvin &
Co., Farrel, Herring & Co., and any other par
ties, on the same conditions, and desire the
buBiness men ef Philadelphia to be present
and see for themselves that the test i fairly
made.
As to the accusation of Mr. Sadler, "thatw
have conspired to cheat, deceive, and humbug
the community," we consider the source
whence It came, and regard it unworthy of
notice; and doubtless the officers of the Inter
State Fair, and the hororable gentlemen of the
committee who superintended the trial at Nor
rlKtown.wcoare also Included Intheacousa
tlon, will consider it in the same light
We have no desire to deceive the community,
nor to injure any man's business; but no man's
business has any claim to stand In the way of
the public good. This Is not merely a personal
matter between safe-mukera. Ine public, who
have valuables to preserve, have a right to know
what safes are reliable, aud what ones will fail
lu any severe exposure.
