every promise he made there was au implied reser
vation that such promise might be broken in case or
necessity, and that of the necessity be was
the sole judge, lie was an unscrupulous but
a most unlucky dissembler. There never was a
politician to whom so many frauds and falsehoods
were brought home by undeniable evidence, lie pub
licly recogulxed the Houses at Westminster as a legal
Parliament, and at the siune time made a private
minute in council declaring the recognition null. He

There Is a moral chronology In history. Andrew
Jchnson makes the perfidy of Charles shine, by con

which did not hesitate to climb Into tue Presidency
by other s Btalrs over the dead body of Abraham
Lincoln I
This mnd tailor of Tennessee said he would be the
black man's Moses, aud suddenly became bis Nero
(applause): he put out his eyes by depriving him,
helpless and at the mercy of bis foes, of the right to
protect and educate himself, and now sneers at his
blindness. (Applause.)
He said he would protect the freedmen, and sustain

Andrew Johnson is rash and Irritable, and quick to
feel for bis own d'gnlty, and slow to sympathize with
tbe sufferings or others. He mistakes his own peevish
and mallguant moods tor emulous of pious i al
against Tbaddeus Stevens. He feels the peculiar
malignity against the Republican party that apos

and betrayed. That he has abandoned those who
elected hi m no sane man now denies, Tbe Rebellion
now shouts not for Jefferson Davis, but for "Andrew
Johnson and Jefferson Davis."
