report, embracing the estimate of expenses for
ne year 1868, amounting to $426,510.
The Steward's requisitions were then read
and approved; aftr which the Board adjourned.
A Stove Dealers' Unio.v. The store and
range dealers of this city held a meeting last
evening at Keim's Hall, North Fourth street.
Mr. James Spear was called to the chair. The
object oi the meeting wag to allord au opportu
nity for consultation, and to devise means
whereby dealers cau protect themselves, and
repulale the price Of their goods. It was stated
that during the war foundrjmen raised their
prices.! and the retail dealers having no associa
tion, the price of stoves was not Axed at a uni
fcrm rate; in consequence, dealers sold their
stocks at a loss. A toale of prices were presented
to the meeting. for consideration, but, after
discusf ion, the matter Indefinitely postponed and
the meeting soon after adjourned.
Passengers Taken from a Steamer. The
barque Jenny, Captain Brandes, which arrived
here yesterday from Bremen, reports, 6th inst.,
lat. 42 11, long. 68 05, fell in with steamship
William Penn, from New York for London, dis
abled, as before reported, and took from her the
second steward, A. H. Goodwin, and the follow
ing passencers: Mr. J. J. Mahony, of Paris;
Wi8 Ella II. Phipps, of Mumbles. England; Mrs.
J. J. Healy, Mr. J. J. Healy, Jr., M. Walden
Pell, of New York; Mr. Milholland, of Mount
Savage, Md., Mr. w. II. Anderson, and Mrs. E.
P. Anderson, of New York, and brought thein to
this port.
Imfobtakt Akbest. "Maury" Harris, sup
posed to have been engaged in the robbery of
the Duncannon Iron Works, in February last,
was arrested on Saturday bv Detective Consta
bles J. H. Mirk el and J. H. Mooney, at Eiehth
and Chesnut streets. Tho thieves had stolen a
number of coupons of the North Pennsylvania
Railroad, with other property, amounting to
about $17,000, from the fire-proof. After the
hearing yesterday afternoon, before Alderman
Hurley, Harris was committed In default of
5iu,uuu Dan to answer at court.
Altering thb Specifications. The Commit
tee on Property of tho Board of School Con
tiollers held a meeting last evenicg to investi
gate the charge "that the specifications lor the
erection of a school-house in the thirteenth sec
tion had been altered." A number of witnesses
were examined, and it was ascertained that the
specifications had been altered, so as to change
ioe cnaracter oi me wore to ue aone, out tne
party making the alteration was not ascertained.
The Committee did not conclude the investiga

Fixing the Tax Rate. The Finance Com
mittee met last evenipg for the purpose of con
sidering the tax rate of 1868. After some dis
cussion upon the subject, a motion was made to
fix the rate at $160 on the $100. Several mem
hers of the committee expressed the opinion
that the rate, la all probability, could bo made
at a less figure, but m the absence of official
statements from the Controller, it was thought
' beBt to postpone the subject until Monday even
ing next.
Improvements ik Wateb Works. The re
servoir at KoxboroUKh is nearly completed, and
the work 01 laying tae distributing main, down
the pike to Green lane, will be commenced to
day. The p'pe to Supply Manayuult cannot be
laid until an appropriation is made for that pur
pose. The new mill house at Flat Itock Dam is
entirely completed, and woikmen are now en
gaged in preparing tjje bed for the new Cornish
engine. L
Meeting ix Fourteenth Ward. Last even
ing a Isrge Republican meeting of the Four
teenth WHrd was held at Spring Garden Hall.
General T. G. Morehead presided, and Dr.
BlcNickoll acted as Secretary. Speeches were
made by General Morehead, Dr. Backman, and
others.
Fay Yoi'B Water 'Rents. The Department
of Water is now engaged tnnotitying all per
sons who have neglected to pay their water
rents for the present year, that if their bills are
not immediately settled their supply of water will
be stopped.
City Commipsiokers' Office Removed. The
office of the City Commissioners was'removed
yeBterday to the second story of the Law Build
ing, No. '212 feouth Filth street. .
Cloth Stolen. A. toll of black cloth, valued
at $1000, was stolen yesterday, by two men.
