Can Mr. Johnson be Impeached
For removing Sheridan, Sickles, and Stanton ?
Evidently not. Both the Constitution and the
precedent of all the past sustain him. It
proves that human constitutions are weak
things. There i3 scarcely a business man in
this country that does not see that the course
of Mr. Johnson Is revolutionary nevertheless,
The will of the people is the law of the land.
That will Is that Congress reconstruct -the
country. The President has power and right,
too, technically to put whom he pleases into
the places Congress provides for to move on
the machinery of reconstruction. If Sheridan
grinds the mill forward and Thomas grinds it
backwards we can't complain, so long as we
will he under the dominion of mills. That
mill is our Constitution. Conscience irks its
control. Will we yield conscience f This is
the issue direct and simple. Shall right rule
the land or Andrew John.son, or Andrew
Jone3, for that matter: it is all the same f We
doubt not that Congress will impeach the Pre
sident just as a resolute man once impeached
a crazy engineer who was driving a train, filled
with gay, thoughtless liie on to mad destruc
tion. Not by statute, but by right. The sim
ple qnestiou whether one man can ko this
thirty millions of people in an uproar for two
year more by his insane course is th onus.
tion. l'.nt why grope about among statutes or
Constitutions lor tne ngut t This nation is
governed in tue interest oi tne Almighty. It
a theocracy. Let whatever ia right be done.

Thb Chesnut opens next Monday night with
Mr. and Mrs. VV. J. Florence, in T. W. Robert
sons popular new comedy of Vasic. Thin play
is a clever story of English high and low life,
and is told in elegant style, and adapted espe
cially well for the stage. It Is not painfully
elaborate, nor at all tiresome. The roles of the
ctght characters are rattled oil fluently, but
gracefully, and not without "points" and "hue
situations." The wit and humor is neat and
new, and love-plot is delicately and truthfully
drawn. The moral shiws that "caste" is but a
sham, and tiue happiness in life can only be
found in truthful attection and the cultivation
of the nobler instincts of human nature.
Thb Walnut Street Theatre Is crowded
