' The heavy rain about two weeks since washed away a portion of the outer bank of the Corinthian avenue, just at tne corucr where tho 48-inch main terminates. The work of pre paring the foundation for a substantial wall was immediately commenced, but subsequent rains prevented the completion of the work. Yester day, while one of the workmen was engaged In chting his dinner, having seated himieit upon the top of the bunk, he discovered that the inner brick lining; below the water level was caving In immediately opposite the point where the bank had been washed away on the outside. Word was sent to the Chief Engineer, and that officer, with a gang of men. commenced opera tions to prevent the break from spreading. Late last night wooden platforms had been erected, npon which the men were to stand for the purpose of removing the loose bricks so as to allow ol repuddling the bauk, a large amount of biick clay having been prepared tor that purpose. Fortunately for the safety ol the Teeervoir, the water was quite low. The caving in of the iDner lining wns caused by the tailing of the water from the great main, which rests upon the top of the bank and opens Into a shute upon the bricks, washing the dirt lrom behind them.
