Yi urn, truly. A LINCOLN, p. p.j i in here at court, but my a! dress iselillat Gprluglleld, 111." In duo time Mr. Lincoln wrote me that be would deliver the lecture, a political oue, on the evening of the 27 1 t of February, 18'iO. T tils was rattier late in the season lor a lecture, and the young gentlemen who were responsible were doubtful about Its rncoess, as the expenses were luree. It was stir muted that the lecture wos to be lu Plymouth Church, Itrooklyn: I requested and urged tbat-t,e lecture should be delivered at tbo Cooper IncUUHe. Tbey were fenilul 11 would not pity expetiHes three hun dred and fitly dollars; I thought 1 1 would. In order to relieve MeBsr. Klcliardtt, Pet tingiil, and Tubhb of all responsibility, I called upon Home of the olllcers of the "Young Meu'a Kepubllcan Union," and proposed that they tihould takeMr. Lincoln, and that the lecture should be delivered under their auspices. They respectively declined. 1 next culled upon Mr. Simeon Draper, then President, of 'Tho Draper Kepubllcan Union Club of New York," and proposed to him that His "Union" take Mr. Lincoln and the lecture, nnd assume the responsibility of the expenses. Mr. Draper and his friends declined, and Mr, Lincoln was lei t lu the hands of "the original Jacobs." After considerable discussion, It was agreed on the part ol the oung gentli-men that the lecture should be delivered lu the Cooper Insti tute, if 1 would ngtee t share the expenses. If the saleol tickets (twenty-cents each) for the lecture did not meet the outlay. To this I HHHented: and the lecture was advertised lo ba delivered in the Cooper Institute on the even lucof I he 271 b of February. Mr. Lincoln read the notice of the lecture In the papers, and, without any knowledge of the arrangement, was somewtiul surprised to learn that be was fliBl to make hl appearance before a New York instead of m ' Plymouth Church' auulence. A notice of the proposed lecture ap peared In the New York papers, and the Times spoke of him "as a lawyer who bad some local reputation in Illinois." At my persou-U solicitation Mr. William C'ullon Bryant presided as chairman of the meeting, and Introduced Mr. Lincoln for the lirnt time to a New York audleuce. The lecture was a wonderful success. It has become a part of the bistory or the country. Its remarkable ability was everywhere acknow ledged.and after the 2711) of February the name of Mr. Lincoln was a larmlUr one to the people of the East. After Mr. Lincoln closed bis lec ture, Mr. David Dudley Field, Mr. James W. 3Nye, Mr. Horace Greeley, and myself were called out by the audience, and made short short speeches. I remember say lug then: "One of three gentlemen will be our standard bearer in the Presidential contest of this year; the distinguished Henator of New York, Mr. He ward; the late able and accomplished uover nor of Ohio, Mr. Chase: or the 'unknown knight' who entered the political lists against the Bois GutlDertof Demooraoy, Stephen a. Douglas, on the prairies of Illinois In 1858, and unhorsed him Abraham Lincoln." borne friends Joked ine after the meeting as not being a "good prophet." Theleci ure was over; all the expenses were paid; I was handed by the gentlemen Interested the sum of 81 25 as my share of the profits, as they would have called on me If there bad been a deficiency In the receipts to meet expenses. Immediaiely alter the lecture Mr. Lincoln Vent to Exeter, N. H to visit his Bon Itobert, then at school there, and I sent him a check for $1100. Mr. Tubbs inlormed me a few weeks ago that after the check was paid at the Park Bank be tore it up, but that he would give tm for the check If It could be restored, with the endorse ment on it of "A. Lincoln," as It was made nnvuhln lo thn order of Mr. Lincoln. After the return of Mr. Lincoln to New York from the East, where he had made several ipeeches, he said to me: "I have seen what all Hie New York papers said about that thing of nine lu the Cooper Institute with the excep Mou of the New York Evening Post, and I would like to know what Mr. Bryant thought of It;" and he then added: "It is worth a visit from Springfield, Illinois, to New York, to make the acquaintance of Buch a man as William Cullen Ilryant." At Mr. Lincoln's request I sent htm d, copy of the Evening font, with a notice of his lecture. On returning from Mr. Beecher's church on a Bunday.lu company with Mr. Lincoln, as we ' -were passing the Post Office, I remarked to him: - "Air. Elnootn, l wisu you wouta tane particular notice of what a dark aud dismal place we have here tor a Post Ollice, and I do It for this reason: I think your chance for being the next Presi dent lseoual to that of any man In the country. When you are President, will you recommend ' an appropriation of a million of dollars lor a HUltable location lor a Post Olnoe in this city?" , "With a significant gesture. Mr. iincoiu re marked, "I will make a note of that." On going up Broadway with him In the even 1 Jng, from the Astor House, to hear the Uev. Dr. - Chapin, Mr. Lincoln salu to me: "When I was ' X;ant, several gentlemen made about the same . remark to me that you did to-day about Ihe 1'iHnklencv: they tbongut my chances were about equal to the best."
