Brown was speaking in Hinds county, Miss., a man who voted with him on the secession question, threw a stone at his head, and came near striking him a blow that would have caused his death. Mr. Stoddart Howell, the successor of Hernandez, the City Treasurer of New Or leans, removed by General Sheridan, Is-a hard ware merchant of many years' standing in that city, a man of eminent ability and in tegrity, and an unflinching Unionist. Captain Mikes, of the little raft Nonpareil, which made the voyage across the Atlantic, has been the lion of the day at Cowes, among the "swells" of the Royal Yacht Club. The Queen had intimated that she would pay a visit to the Nonpareil. Mr. Elkts Howe, Jr., who has been at the point of death, is convalescent, and has left New York for Boston. He was suffering from ' enlargement of the heart and a dropsical dis order, and had vainly sought relief from phy sicians in London and Paris. General A. E. Burnside, Governor of Rhode Island; General W. S. Barry, United States Army; ex-Governor and United States Senator R. Yates, of Illinois; Governor Swann, of Maryland; and Governor Bullock, of Massa chusetts, are at Saratoga. The Rev. Newman Hall, the Congrega tional minister in London, is coming to the United States. During the dark days of our civil war he labored zealously to remove the N popular prejudice in England against the JNorth and the Union. Major John J. Williamson, the newly ap pointed Chief of Police of New Orleans, was formerly on General Franklin's Btaff, and after wards Ordnanoe Officer, Department of the Gulf. He was General Bailey's chief assistant in building the coffer dam on Red River, whereby the iron-clad fleet was saved. A despatch from Springfield, Mass., says: "Mr. Blake, the detective, who figured in the detection and arrest of the West Auburn murderers last winter, has lately been in this city, and succeeded in swindling one of our hotel-keepers out of a bill of $100 for board and other expenses.
