had carried into effect the law relative to boiler
explosions passed by the Lenisluturo of the
Slate, the late sad disaster, by which, one or
more lives were lost, would mo-t certainly have
been avoided.

boemakers' Co-operative Association.
A mtetmgot shoemakers was held last evening
at he Hall, corner of Filth and Locust streets,
for the purpose of perfecting their plans for the
lormation of a protective co-operative aisocia
tion. Michael Card whs called to the Chair.
The committee appointed to obtain a suitable
hall for the accommodation of the members,
made their report, which wa accepted, and
they were instructed to lease a room on Arch
street, below Sixth, for tne purpose. The pre
amble, resolutions, and articles of agreement
were read. It was recommended that the
society should be known as "Tne Co-operative
Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Association of
Philadelphia." Tho committee appointed to
procure information by corresponding with kin
dled associations in other occupations, and with
Horace Greeley, made their report, and stated
that a letter had been received from Mr. Gree
ley, embracing several matters of interest. The
wnter advises the members to "be sure in start
ing to trust each other, and not be too ambi
tious to be all rulers, and they must succeed."
The meeting then adjourned to reassemble next
Wednesday evening.
Railroad Merger. AJuieeting of the Com
mittee on the merger of the Warren and Frank
lin Railroad Company with the Philadelphia
and Erie Railroad Company, took place yester
day atternoon in the Clerks' oilice of the Select
and Common Councils, William E. Littleton,
Ksq., in the chair.
An iuvUatiou was extended to the members
of the Committee from the Directors of the
Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, to accompany
them on their annual visit over the road on
Monday next. The invitation was accepted, and
the committee will leave West Philadelphia at
12 o'clock on the day named.
An invitation was, on motion, requested to be
given through the Chairman to the Superinten
dent ot the Warren and Franklin Railroad to be
present with the Committee on the trip.

Supervisors ok Highways. From a number
of nominations from each ward, for Supervisor
of Highways, the Mayor made the following ap
pointments: Samuel F. Mitchell for Third and
Fourth Wards; James Thompson for Ninth and
Tenth Wards; C. A. Porter tor Seventh andi
Eighth Wards; Joseph Ah for Sixteenth and
Seventeenth Wards: W. H. Maneelv for Eiirh-
teentb Ward; Henry Mvers for Twentieth Ward;

New Spire and Cross. To-rnorrow morn
ing, the cross which is to surmount the new
spire, lust completed on St. Augustine's Catholic
Church, will be placed in position. The cross
is nine feet long, and both it and the ball are
neatly gilded. The distance from the floor to
the apex of the cross will be one hundred and
seventy feet.
Slight Fire. About 10 o'clock last even
ing a 6light fire occurred in the saw manufactory
