t 8 A STRANGE LOVE AFFAIR. A Chlc Belle Fall la I vrltta a Japanese Performer, who k .aclprocatee tke Passion, a AtM9 in Tycoon for FirBlMlaa to Carry sm the Courtship, jfVom A Milivauket Wucontin, July 4. While the Japanese were performing in Chi ago tbry attracted the attention of man; of Vie nrst laoies 01 iui i-uj, wuo uiaue mem pre. venta and presented them with tbeir photo graphs. It wai the Jancy of an hour, which riaiitled bolh parties and was forgotten by both. There was one lady, however, a daughter ot a merchant of our neighboring city, a beautiful Ctrl of eighteen eumrnerg, who seems to have become completely lost to the infatuation, and to have captivated entirely the heart ot one of the Japanese, who has the muHlcally-eoundinK name of Slne-Kee-Chee. This worthy, as we have learned Irom the members ot the company, bus something ot a romance in his history. His father was a nobleman attached to the court of the Tycoon. He loved and married a girl in the lower clans, very pretty, very good, but not high-blooded. The Tycoon learned of It, and his indignation hm great. The nobleman begaed and prayed. It was no use. He had insulted the diqnity of the Tycoon. There was but one way to make reparation to commit hari-kari In plain English, to disembowel himself. The Tycoon's word was law, and the nobleman died, his pro nrtv vmnct to the Tvcood. His wile, disowned. joined a company ot acrobats. Years after, this name company was performing before the Tycoon. In the bamboo act, which is his lavorite, the Tycoon was much struck with the daring of a boy who did wonderful things on the slender reed. Upon inquiry he learned that the boy was none other than the son of his nee favorite minister and friend, and had high lilood In his veins. He took the boy from the company, and trained and educated him, for the friendship he had once borne his father. This key grew up about the court, and was none other than Bing-Kee-Chee, which in Japanese means the son of a nobleman who had offended the Tycoon. Sing-Kee-Chce grew up about the Court until be attained the age ot twentj-geven. He has an excellent education, and speaks several lan ruages fluently. English he also speaks well, with Bing-Kee-Chee it was that the Chicago lady became Infatuated. He came out with the company at the order of the Tycoon, to watch them and to give his highness a history of the country, its people, and its customs. He is no common juggler, although he delights in the bamboo act which brought him before the favorable notice of the Tycoun. The young lady made his acquaintance in Chicago, talked with him and invited him to her bouse, where he .hart made himself quite a favorite. His history was known, and the lady, by one of thoso romantie fancies which will, in the eye of the world, sometimes make fools ot the most sensible, learned to love him. Not for his good looks certainly: for intelligent as he is, and with the hieh blood coursing through his veins, Sing-Kee-Chee Is not the most fascinating ot the party. Perhaps the lady loved bim for the SHcndces of his father. Peihaps not. We will not attempt to imagine the excuse tor the notion, to call ft by no other name. Sing-Kee-Chee was delighted with the ladv, but he had no further thought, for he left her with no other exchange than that of a pho tograph, he carrying herd with those of other ladies which had been given him. At Detroit tSing-Ke -Chee was surprised to meet the lady, who found the world a blank desert after ner heatt had become another', and in Detroit Blng-Kee-Cheo first began to discover the secret, and to fee), too, that although his was pledged to another in Japan, there was an attraction for it here. He did not discover this until it was the subject of a joke by the mctnbeis of the company, whom he one day surprised by the information tint he loved the young American better than he loved the maiden ot his own lnnd. Tti9 was a phase in the affair that the company had not dreamed of, and it was a startling one. They told the lover to beware; that he must take a lesson from the fate of his father, who ha l loved without the consent ot the Tycoon, and it he persisted his father's fate would be his. Sing-kee chee did remember this, and endeavored to banish tier from his heart, but it was a useless task. The more he tried thu deeper he loved, and before the company left Detroit he made the romantic maiden's heart happy by declaring that be loved her, and that it the Tycoon's consent could be gained by the strongest entreaties, he should make her his wife; and with this assurance the maiden returned to her parents In Chicago, who are striving by every means in their power to eradicate the notion from her mind. 8ing Kce-Chee 1b obstinate and determined. He lias written to the Tycoon the lull account of the matter has told his love in the barbaric but expressive language of his people, and lias sent forward with this the testimony of all the Japaueje that the girl is ot good family and respectable and worthy, that sue loves to dis traction, and will be no disgrace to the best blood ot Japan. We are told by the interpreter that the present Tycoon is a young man who has a high estimation of the American people, and it is believed that if the parents of the Chicago lady will give their consent to the union, which for very good reasons they at present withhold, the Tycoon will gladly yield ,his consent, as a step towards winning the favor of the people of this great country. Of that we shall know more hereafter. At pre sent two anxious hearts are awaitiug the de cision of Ithe Tycoon. 81ng-Kee-Cb.ee knows very well that if the consent is not given his fate is sealed, for with the refusal would come a notice that by the asking of such a favor be had offended beyond redemption, and only the committal of hari-kari would wtpe out the insult. We certainly trust that no such 8td fate awaits the lover, for the lady has decided that if he dies for her, she goes to the grave with bim. Alter the arrival of the company in this city, every mail brought to Slnjr-Kee Chee a letter from his betrothed, and on Saturday she came to meet him previous to his departure from this city. Her strange love, instead of decreasing, seems to flouiluh as time rolls on and opportu nity is given to think it over, and when the party left this city last evening to go to Fort Wayne, passing through Chic igo, there seemed no happier or more devoted lovers in this world than King-Kee-Chee and his Chicago betrothed. Parrot I)uclas and Eugene Pelletan favored the widest liberty of conscience, and thought that Free masonry should not seem to commit itself to theism. On the other side, MM. Garrison and Ilerinitte favored a loyal adherence to the traditions. At the same time, in the opinion of the former, there was nothing in the phrase to exclude or embarrass an atheist. The debate was warm, and resulted in the retention of the formula, by a vote of one nunarea against smy-seven. A Theatrical Kvent. The reproduction of Victor Hugo's Ilernani at the Theatre Francais has caused a profound sensation in Paris. The Government did not modify the text in a single passage, and the drama was played as on the evening of its first representation, when Louis Philippe was king. On that occasion the theatre was divided between the partisans of the classic and the romantio drama, who expressed their conflict ing opinions with noisy energy. There was nothing of this on the evening of the reproduction. The theatre was densely filled, and applause was not stinted. Although pains were taken to remove every appearance of a political demonstration, the young men of the schools made it very evident that they were thinking quite as much of the exiled author as of his remarkable drama. The Paris Barbers. A Paris correspondent' says the hair-dressers now begin work at 9 o'clock in tbe morning and continue through out the day. These great artists give them selves airs jutt now. "The invited to balls have to positively implore their aid, and pay fifteen francs to forty francs for half-an-hour's decorative arrangements of the true and false. M. F., the mighty monarch of the coijure empire, showed me with a certain tone of pride a note he had received from a great lady who required his services. In English it would be something like this: 'The Princess C. reposes full confidence in M. F.'s promise to be at her hotel by 11 o'clock; nevertheless, the carriage will be sent for M. F. at half-past 10 o'clock, in whom alone the Princess C. has confidence, and for whose taste she has the highest consideration." RELIGIOUS rMOTICES. ITA'TrVAlIV r . K Rev. II. BAKKR. Jr., Pastor.
