all ont looking at a game of base ball by the

"Sfriggikses Lasdiko, Del The owner of
the town at this place spent the day a-fishing
Without accident of any sort, either to himself

from sunstroke to report."

paraded to-day, but on account of the extreme
heat they disbanded at 2 o'clock P. M. They
tad been marching around since 7J o'clock
A. M. The trees being all scrub pines, and
giving no shade, the troops felt the effects of
the sun very much. They marched in good
order, wore their new dark blue cloth uniform,
and perspired quite freely."
"Falls of Schuylkill. 'The Mother Cary's
Chickens Barge Club' spent most of the day
cn the beautiful Schuylkill, practising with
their new barge. Late in the afternoon their

were out a-fishing, the crew having been com

THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS RE-
VISITED.
Our artists having gone out of town, and
left their pictures behind to be sold to pay the
expenses of their owners while seeking to cul
tivate Art and artful objects in the mountains
or by the sea shore, we have taken it upon
ourselves, as patrons of art, to give their pro
ductions a first-class puff during their absence.
In doing so we must say that our criticisms are
wholly unbiassed, and based mainly upon the
merits of their work. We have had engraved.Jat
an enormous expense (considering the state of
the weather), many of the most striking and
meritorious subjeots. Without these illustra
tions, of course, our readers would have a
very imperfect idea of them.
0. 140 CALIFORNIA SCENERY (SUNSET).

Persons who have been there say it is true to

The principal figure in this little sketch is
well painted and true to nature. We think
the water a little too cool, yet there is great
depth to it. The perspective is excellent.

The felloes that gather around places of this
kind in country towns are seen in the fore

day out, they are never tired.
NO. 231 STILL-WATER.
This view was taken in Maine. The town
is situated on the Penobscot, and the still-neaa
of the scene is proverbial. The artist was
there himself, and told us he had -often lain
there, and drank in the spirit of the scene.
He has certainly rendered it with great taste.

NO. 250 GROUP OF CHILDREN, ON IVORY.
This little gem would be worth preserving
as a fit companion-piece to Mr. Peabody's
miniature of Queen Victoria. We learn it
was the artist's intention to furnish a copy of
this picture to that gentleman, but he was
deterred by his friends, who told him that
probably one "elephant" of that character
was about all the millionaire would care
about. The handling of the children is very
happy. '
NO. 258 BLOCKADE-RUNNER BEACHED.
This is a perfect wreck. This has been
overhauled with a full cargo of spirits and
drugs, and has been run ashore to save it
from the authorities. The figure-head is very
finely cut, and the artist has done justice to
