FIRE AND BURGLAR PROOF SAFES fl
Yjonc ADOUT
LILLIE'S CHILLED-IRON SAFES
IMPORTANT FACTS
wAuai tub riuriE snvciD
"MAKE A NOTE O F."
Pact I. LlLLri'S CHILLED-IRON 8AFK8
have been lamely Introduced fur the taut twelve
years, and sold to those having tlie larvest amount ot
Valuable, an the beat and n.osl ihurougul? Riirglar
l'rool sale; andt up lo the last three years, It haa been
rare lo bear ol one of Llllle's Bales havluR benu
robbed by burners, to see or bear ot a white
blackbird or wbile elephant.
Fait II. It la notorious tbat the profusion of the
burglar baa advanced at a ranld taoe wllbin tbe last
elaht years, and wbat was thoroughly burglar-proof
tlien Is not so now, whtcb accounts tor tbe lacl tbat
within tbe last three years very few of Lil lie's
dales bave been robbed, aud the secret anonymous
circulars distributed by other safe-makers lat
terly, sliowtng t wry frw cases only, Is the strongest
evidence tbat b t a very small number bave been
robbed to this time, notwitbHtandliiK the large Dum
ber iu use, and tbe amount at stake it successful.
Fact III. There are two, and ,ouly two, general
and leading priuctdles upon which all burglar-proof
ale are constructed. Die one Is pounng liquid
lion between aud around bars of wrought Iren, hard
ened sireel, or auy proper combination of meiais.
This principle Is aripted by Llllle, In the Chilled
Irun Sale, and covered and controlled by bis letters
paleuu,
7 lie i.ihrr Is made up ot layers of plates, of different
uieiais, neiu loueiuer uuua or rivets, or Doth. To
this principle tbera are various objections: The
cost In double. The wrought Iron plates, Which are
tbe strength of the sale, are outside1, aud are operated
upou by i lie hole catalogue ot burglars' tools. The
bolts or rivets are easily forced by suitable tools,
with or w ithout powder, and cannot be sustained
The foit.rr principle., adopted by Little, avoids all
these objections, can be made any thickness, and
withstand any amount of rmistauce required; avoids
the rivets, bolts, etc: has no wrought Iron outside to
be operated upon by burglars' Implements.
Fact IV. Mr. Ll'lle, tbe Pa'eritee.so soon as he
learned that It was poselble with the modern Ini-
proved toola tor burglars to grind tbruugh chilled
Iron or hardened steel, began experimenting to avoid
tbe difficulty, aud alter muoh labor aud expense he
has perlected a system lor chining Iron and combin
ing metals that la entirely piool against the burglar's
drill, or any other of his tools, even the wedge, war
' ranted to stand the hardest test practicable for any
burglar to make. As a proof of Lis success, tbe fol
lowing certificate Is now offered lroin the Novelty
Works, Hew York:
OrFictc Novki.ty Iron Worsts.
, r,.,, Ntw YoKi lth December, 166.
Jlfrr. LevHn LIVie fc Hutu
OKKTUtMKNi-We have subjected the sample of
Chilled Iron you furnished us to the most severe tests
Ias reguids dulling through it) that we could bring to
iear upon It. and without success.
, It Is our oplulou that It can only be penetrated by
y tbe use ot a large number of drills, and the expendi
ture ot much power, with days of time.
And we mink it Impossible for a burglar, with his
time and power, to penetrate It at all,
Yours truly,
Isaac V. Hoi.mks. Superintendent.
Lyman U. 11 all. Foreman.
And the following exteunive Iron mauuiucturers In
Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago, alter the most
thorough testa, lind the result to be substantially the
same.
Aud their principal Iron Workers so certify:
. Alessrs. Merrick fc boo, bouthwaxk Foundry, Phlla-
, delplna.
, The Flnkley A Williams Works, F.oston, Mass,
i Tbe Union Foundry and the Northwestern Foun-
; dry, Chicago, 111.
Fact V. The proposition made the public hereto
fore Is now renewed: 1 will furnish Sates or Vault
Doors, of same size and capacity of other best makers,
and at oue-lblrd loss price; and the same may be
tested when finished, aud I will furnish the man to
test the work of any other maker, aud he shall rur-
. nish the man to lest my work ; and the party so order
ing may accept the work which stauds the most re
slstance,ln any way or manner practicable for a burglar
to work.
Fact VI. I would now say to any of the owners ot
Llllle's Safes, that, iu view of the preceding tacts, if
they feel the Deed of additional security . I will ex
change with them, on lair terms, givlna them all the
late Improvements, and the loci eased security .which
la claimed to be beyond tbe reach of Bui glars, until
some new system Bhall be developed In tbe working
01 Iron, which would now seem hardly possible.
Fact Vn. It Is true that the Sheet-Iron or common
Bale, as now made, under ordinary circumstances
(aud when not crushed by the tall ot walls or timbers)
usually saves the written matter, but If tne tire Is se
vere it has to be copied, for the Ink will soon fade out;
besides, the sale Is twisted up and useless.
It Is equally true that the Chilled-Iron Safe saves
the written matter in a perfect stale, that It does not
fade out or require copying, and tbat the safe Itself
Is ready for turtber use. Any number ot trials In
tires, certified to, prove these tacts, and If any of the
sale venders who ate distributing secret, anonymous
" circulars to injure the reputation ot LILLIE'S 8AFH
sre not satisfied with these statements, they can have
the opportunity ot testing by tire one of their own
Safes with LILLIE'S, on equal terms, whenever
they so decide.
I act VIII. In answer to the story circulated by
Interested parties, that Lillie's bate had goue up, and
bad ruined LUlle, etc, I would say that at uo lime In
the last two years could Lllne&Sou half supply the
demand tot bales, and were under the necessity ef
forming a large stock company, with a very large
capital, to meet the demaud; aud Mr. Lewis Lillle. Sr.,
Is now the president ol that company, which Is located
on the Delaware, In Pennsylvania, aear Easlou, and
is tbe largest bale Works probably in existence, aud
will be aoie to supply all demand tor bales, Locks,
Chilled-Iron Vaults, etc
In conclusion, I beg to call the attention of my
patrons and friends, aud tbe public, to the tacts here
prenenteu, aud to say that I am very tbauktul tor
cast favors, and that I am prepared to turulsh LIL
LIE'S BUROLARAND flKK AND BURULAR-
rAUUX u x , t " ' - - - - - . - -
VAULTS and COMBINATION LOCKS, all at short
notice, warranted to be the beet aud cheapest In
market. I also keep constantly a large assortment
