    REBEL WAR HISTORY.
THH BATTLES OF FRBDUHICKftBURO AND CHANCEL- 1
. LORBTtLLR.
Benlstiiln Q. Ilunnrhrevs. Is'e a Cotifptlftrate
General; hat published aa account of his "Ito-
collectlotis of Fiedenes-sburg." Towards the
conclusion ne sums up nis views in regard to
Fredericksburg and Chancollomille, as fol
lows: "The battle ol rhancl1nrvtlln was frmcrhl
from Fredertclrgburif to the Wlldei-nnsi aloni?
two almof t paraliel roads the 'Plank Road' and
tb.9 'Old Turnpike' and is justly regarded as
one ot me proudest achievements ol Southern
arms. Military critics are puzzled at its tosult.
Lee knew with absolute certainty tbat Hooker
had over 120,000 men. Hooker knew with equal
certainty that Lee had less than 60,000. Hooker
moved over 80,000 to Cbancellorsvillc, and left
Sedgwick, in front of Fredericksburg, with over
thirty thousand. Why did Sedgwick cross a
portion of bis army over the river at Deep run
on the 20th of April f Was the movement pre
mature, or was It made to threaten and hold
Lee at FredoncksbuTif until Hooker could slip
through the Wildernefli, and fall upon the flank
and rear of Lee's army t If so, why did Hooker
halt at Chancel lorsville, and commence tortl
fjln-a- on the 30th of April f
"After Lee moved up to Chancellorsvlllo and
confronted Hooker on 1st ot May, why were
Hooker and Sedgwick both inactive f They
knew that Lee had divided his army. Hooker
and Sedgwick each had an army had they
been Coufcderate soldiers tbat could have
vanquished either half of Lee's army, if tbat
hall had been any other but Confederate sol
diers. Yet they both remained inactive until
Jackson pained the extreme right flank of
Hooker'b army on the 2d, with lully half of
Lee's army, and drove back the right wing of
Hooker's army upon the centre. Then Sedgwick
began to move in earnest, on the 3d of May,
and Hooker remained on the defensive with his
ninety thousand against forty-tive thousand.
From the number ot men that Hooker knew
' Jackson bad on his right flank, stirring up his
Dutch, he must have known that Lee had but
few left between him and Sedgwick. Yet
Hooker remained, defending his ninety thou
sand as best he could against Anderson's
twelve thousand and Jackson's twenty-five
thousand, and let Lee turn towards Fredericks
burg, with two divisions eight thousand men
on the 4th ot May, and in hearing distance of
Hooker, drive Sedgwick, with his twenty thou
sand, across the Bappahanock; and on the 6ta
became alarmed lor the safety of his ninety
thousand, and precipitately recrossed the river.
That didn't look to-the Rebels like 'pulverizing
the rebellion' much.
"Had Hooker been a Lee, and Sedgwick a
Jackson, Sedgwick would have moved out lrom
Deep run with his thirty thousand squura across
the plateau between Barkadale and Karly during
the night of 1st of May, and presented hlmaeli
on the hills on the Mine road. General Early
would have been captured or routed back to
North Anna Barksdale would have evacuated
Mayre Hill, and perhaps made his escape to the
'plank road' and gained Lee and Jackson
would not have made his flank movemeat to
Hooker's right flank. Still, then, nothing but
action on the part of both Hooker and Sedgwick
would have prevailed. It Hooker had pru
dently remained at Chancellorsville defending
bis ninety thousand men against half of Lee a
aitny, now reduced by the loss of Early, Stone
wall Jackson would have turned upon Sedg
wick with the other half of Lee's army, and
poshed him back across his pontoons at Frede
ricksburg, and returned towards Chancellorsville
and struck Hooker on his left flank and drove
in bis left wing upon bis centre, and Lee would
have pushed the whole disordered mass through
the Wilderness and across the Rapldan. But if
Hooker bad been a Johnson or a Longstreet on
the morning of the 2d of May, with ninety thou
sand men at Chancellorsville, and had Sedgwick
beeu a Beauregard, D. H. Hill, or a Hood, with
thirty thousand men on the hills back ot Frede
ricksbure, a joint, active, clonng-m movement
would have been made upon Lee, and Lee
would have been crushed upon the plank road,
and that would have looked like 'pulverizing
the Rebellion.' But the supposed Sedgwick
Beauregard Hill Hood was not the real
Stonewall Jackson, and the supposed Hooker
Johnston Lbnestreet was not the real Robert
E.Lee. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson
knew their men."
