the sub-division Into prepenses to be taken,
ihe plan shows an avenue loo hundred feet
wide, which Is to be laid out along the entire
northern line of the Island. This avenue will
alBo extend around and upon the Schuylkill
fiont, to connect with Schuylkill avenue, now
located from South street to the Fish House,
below Gray's Ferry. Surveys are now being
made lor the purposo of locating Delaware
avenue east and wet ot the proposed Navy
Yard at League Island.
The plans were examined by the Committee,
and seemed to give very treneral satisfaction.

tbe best plan of acquiring possession ol the pro
perty which had been vacated.
Burglaries. Early yeRterday morning the
dwelling of Mr. Toy, at Third and Carpenter
streets, was entered by burglars, who were ran
sacking tho premises for valuables whoa the
noise aroused Mr. Toy. Cpoa getting out of
bod he lound the room strewn with articles.
He then sprang a watchman's rattle, which
frightened the burglars away. They carried off
some clothing and silverware.
The residence of Mr. Charles Rowland, No.
117 8. Eighteenth street, was entered during the
absence of the lamtly within a day or two, and
was found to have been thoroughly ransacked
when some of the in mates returned to it from
tbe country. What the thieves had carried off
could not be ascertained, in the absence ot the
heads ot the household. Families about to leave
their residences during the summer months
should notify tho police of the fact.
About two hundred and tifty dollars were
stolen on Monday afternoon from the residence
of Mr. William Gamble. No. 402 Henry street,
during the absence of the lamily. As there was
, no breaking to enter, tbe thief is supposed to
have used a false key.
Thb Press Clcb Election ok Officers.
Yesterday afternoon the Club held its annual
election lor oflicers for the ensuing year. After
the preliminary business was concluded, the
Club proceeded to the election of officers for
the coming year, with the lollowiiig result:

Joseph Robinson, and C. H. Clark. The Investi
gating Committee consists of William B. Cun
nlngton, Emerson Bennett, and R. 8. Menamin.
Of Some Importance to Hackmen. An or
dinance of the city requires all hacks for public
use or hire to be registered at the office ot the
Highway Department; and also requires the
owners of the same to pay an annual license of
$2-60 on each hack, between the 1st of May and
the 1st day of June, under a penalty of $5 for
each time a hack may be used after that time,
if the license has not been paid. There is now
on tbe books of the Department over 400 hacks,
but of that number only 100 have complied with
the law; the other 300 are subject to the penalty
If arrested by the High Constables, whose duty
it Is to see that the ordinances of the city are
complied with.
Anniversary. The anniversary of the Sun
day Schools ot the Fourth Baptist Church, Fltth
and Buttonwood streets, was held last evening.
Tbe exercises were opened with prayer by Rev.
Dr. Jeffreys', after which the scholars united In
sineing. Addresses were made by Rov. J. W.
Jackson, Rev. Dr. Newton, and Rev. Dr. Jeffreys.
During the evening a number of Tresentatlons
were made by the different classes; among these
was a tine portrait of Father Beazle, one of the
oldest deacons of the church. The gifts were
dulv acknowledged by the parties to whom thev
were presented. The schools number about 350
children. ,
A Wobkinomen's TickET. The Committee
on Resolutions, appointed at a public .meeting
of workingmen held some days since, met last
evening, at Eighth and Walnut streets, and re
ported a series of resolutions, setting forth tbat
both political parties had entirely ignored the
workingmen, and that they Intended to sepa
rate themselves from political organizations,
and vote, and invite their Iriends to vote, for
only such men as look to the workingmen's in
terests. The resolutions were agreed to, and
the Committee adjourned.
AMUSEMENTS.
Benefits fob thb Sufferers. Mrs. John
Drew and Mr. G. L. Fox have tendered the
Arch Street Theatre, on Saturday afternoon
next, for a benefit "matinee" to the Philadel
phia Association for the Relief of Disabled Fire
men, when the entire receipts on that occa
sion will be given to that noble institution for
distribution. Tickets can be procured at the
theatre, or from the President, Mr. George W.
Tryon, or any of the Board of Trustees. The
, advertisement gives all the particulars.
To-morrow t Friday) evening a benefit will
be given at this theatre to the families of the
firemen who were killed at the late lire in Wal
nut street. A large number of well-known
artists have volunteered their services, and the
performance will undoubtedly be very fine, and
we hope the house will be crowded.
Walnut Street Theatre. Mr. Joseph Jef
ferson appears this evemug in his great role of
'Asa Trencnard," in the comedy of Our Ameri
can Cousin. Mr. Charles Vandeuhoff will essay
tho part of "Lord Dundreaiy," and these stars
will be supported by Miss Susan Denin and the
company favorites. To-morrow and Saturday,
last nights -of Mr. Jefferson's brilliant engage
ment. Hip Van Winkle will oe played.
Arch Street Theaibb. This evening Mr. G.
L Fox presents his lavorite pantomime ot Jack
ani GUI, which proves a popular as ever. Mr.
C K. Fox appears as "Pautaloon," assisted by
Miss Louisa Browne, Master Calllgue, and tbe
whole company. A lauehaole comedietta pre
cedes the pantomime each evening, in which
Mr. Sam. Hemple takes a leading parUlt
should not be forgotten that Mr. O. L. rox has
big benefit to-morrow evenine, when his Iriends
' will, no doubt, turn out in numbers.

The Autcmnal Glory of the Alleghenies.
This tine landscape painting, by Mr. F. DeB.
Richards, one of our resident artists, is on exhi
bition at the gallery of the Artists' Fund Society,
No 1334 Chetnut street. This painting is one of
the finest landscapes ever exhibited here, and
exhibits the Valley of the Cheat river, West
Virelnia. It is well worth a visit. The exhibi
tion is for 1 be benefit of the Union Temporary
Home lor Children, one of our most deserving
charities. m .

side, between Maud Island aud Wilfred Point. It lies
bW. W., nearly three cables from me nortnwest
point of the island, and N.NE. V E. three cables from
tbe southeast extreme of W Hired Point; It is near tbe
position of the heaviest part of tbe tide race.
The passage Ib therefore dangerous tor large vessels
during tbe strength of either stream, and It Is recom
mended to enter It especially from tbe southward
at slack water, and to pass on tbe eastern Bide of the
rock. . .
