Taris, May 31.-The fciveo on Tuesday last
fcT the Austrian Embay to all the majesties
fjrl hfehneices In Purls wss, tw every one ex
peeled It would be, the greatest event of this
memorable season. The Eigbsii Ambassador's
ball of tbe piercdlm? week wt gorgeous Id i the
extrrme, and those wlo attended it thought it
eoirtdnotbe suipa'o.ea, but Trince do Metter
nlch's entertainment has outdone evervthinp.
It has been compared to the historical ball elvcn
In 1810 to Napuleon I by Prince Hchwarxem
bcrc. The plnn was the same, only since the
above date dot orators have Invented so many
ditfeient wars ot making one ball look like two,
by means of prisms, glasses, and other optic
deceits, they are so incomparable at building up
rrottoesand cf tc.des. that if unlimited power
In our days is given them, they convert a quiet
house into the hanging eardeng of Semirarals
on the shortest notice. That an unlimited sum
f money was allowed to all the draughtsmen,
artists, eardeners, and decorators at the Aus
trian Embassy, by no less a power than the
Austrian Government, Is evident from the royal
preparations made.
The ball-room was erected on the continua
tion of the ground floor, leading into the
inagniflcent gardeu lighted with electric tire of
every color; nil the statues were bathed iu
Bengal light. In the background rose a roct,
from which, at a giveo signal, started a cascade,
and gradually presented the appearance of a
volcano throwing forth torrents of lava this
was effected by electric rays in the distance.
This splendid illumination made the lights In
all the open halls look almost wan and pale.
The chandeliers were Immense baskets of
flowers, Tound which branches held thousands
of wax tapers.
The ball was opened by the Emperor with the
Queen of the Belgians, the Prince of Prussia
with the Empress. Tne Kinz of the Belgians
danced with PriDccss Mathilda, and Prince
Lcnchtemberg with Piincess de Metternich.
After this otlicial quadrille came John Strauss'
waltz, and the fcene was maenidcent. All
ranks were blended in one promiscuous whirl.
No one was particularly remarkable in the
crowd of royalty; no one teemed to be more or
less than simple pleasure-seekers. It was a
dizzy round of flashing diamonds, emeralds,
rubie?, orders, stars, diadems.
The cotillon bcan it 4 and was not over tr.l
lalr-past 5, hen the erectile rays changed and
figure d the gloiious rising sun.
Fans were delivered to all the ladies present
in memory of the fete. Each fan was made of
tinted cedar, on which the iuitials of the lady
guest were artistically painted in forget-me-nots,
flipper W89 announced at one.
The Emperor and Empress of the French. Kins
and Queen ol the Pclgians, Prince Alfred, Prince
and Princes s of Pruscia, all the German, Rus
sian, end Napoleonic princes were seated at tbe
same table in the banqueting hall on the first
floor i f the Embassy.
On their passage from the ball-room to the
supper table they went through a shrubbery of
exotics; the stairs were covered with velvet pile.
Is it wise to 6ay more, to mention any particu
lar names, describe any particular toilets f
Your readers may think that it is: they wish to
know what people had on. I therefore will
name a lew of the wonderful dresses to make
the tableau complete; but I must say that, by
elesorlbing a lew robes, I do great Injustice to
those I cimnot de;c ribe lor want of space.
Firstly. The Empress Eugenie wore a straw
COlored robe over straw-colored poult. It was
covered with a tulle cloud that was looped up
With diamonds.
The Ambassadress of Austria was In white.
She wore a large garland of white roses with
eilver leaves, which crossed the bosom and hung
down the front ot tbe skirt.
The Priucess of Prussia wore white tulle, with
white lilac, She refembles her mother, the
Q icen of England, very much: her bearing is
-very ;oyal. out her arms and shoulders arc
somewhat high toi.ed in color.
The Quteu of the Belcians was In grey,
trimmed with Alencon lace and black feathers.
The Princess of ltussia was in tulle and
mauve lilac. Her ornaments were diamond
bees.
Princess Obclinski's robe was sea green,
cove red w ith lea roses; and she wore a diamond
that is worth 600,0()0f.
Some ef tbe short costumes that are being
made for official excursions to the Exposition on
this occasion are very pretty. They are mostly
mohair or lines of the finest description, when
not of light checked or imperceptibly striped
lk. Two large sash ends bang down behind,
and the tront width is an apron to correspond.
Tbe bottom of the sash cn Is is trimmed with al
ternate folds of silk cut on the cross, and lolds
of the material employed between. The trout
apron is trimmed in the same way.
The jackets are loose.
Huts worn with these are trimmed with phea
sant plumes, and as much as possible oa the tip
of one's no.-e.
But of all the absurd hats ever seen the Japa
nese is the worst. It is a plate with a button on
the top, and lust poUcd on the chignin behind,
Which jerks it forward and makes it look like
anything people cat or drink on in the tray or
platter line. The only one I have as yet seen to
advantage was at the Vincennes races yester
day; it was worn Dy a richly attired ludvof th3
dtmt-monde. The new accessories are ever jet
ornaments, collars, cutla, belts, gimp, and
neckties.
Jewels are plain Tuscan gold by day and
Btones by night. The newest earrings are swans,
in enamel foliage.
At ihe last ball given at the Tuileiies it was
observed that the finest women were Americans
or of American extraction. Airs. B. 8., of New
York, was in a lovely maize robe, over which a
haze of tulle appeared to hover, looped up by
tea roses and glisten nr foliage. A small bou
quet on the bosom bloomed among diamond
pendants on her neck. Iler hair, which is jet
black, was bra'ded a t'empire with gold. Miss
V. wfcs another beautiful American star, as also
Mrs. B., who wore a feather peplum over &
bouillonne skirt

Q. In answering questions put by tbe prosecution,
why did you dei-crihe the third parly as a neatly
dressed man, and not mention his mime, an you knew
him to be t-nrrntt T A. Hecause I did not think 11 wat
neceft ary until I was n-kert the quest I n.
Q, Why did you usellooth's nauieand uot Snrratt's?
A. Because I did not doem It necessary to moailoa
Burrau's name.
Q. Were yt.u not told not to name him until asked.
A. Ko, fir: I was not.
Tbe witness repeated a portion of bis testimony
given yesterday. He did cot know where the nentiy
ilressi d party came from, but be came trom the direc
tion of H street; tbe three parties stood together, and
were engaged In conversation: at the lime or this rush,
and ben tbe remark was made by Bomb, "I think
be will come now," the three artles were standing
together before Hie door, and looking Into the space tbe
rresldmt must pans it he came down.
'1 be villainous looking man stood next to the thea
tre. Booth next, and John II. SurruU next. The sus
picious of Ihe wlloess were liiat exalted by seeing so
fientlemaul)' a looking man as Jlontti talk to so vil
alnons a looking man as tbe other appeared to be.
Tl.e witness here repeated bis testimony as to Surrait
moving to ami from the theatre. When Surratt called
the lime he did not address Booth and his companion
particularly, but simply called the time. If they had
talked out mid about their plot they would have beea
beard, and men who are engaged In such plots are
smarter than to let everybody know tholr business.
burrattdid uot whisper the time to Booth aud his
coojpauli li, bill called it out loud. Jle appeared to
Lave business to attend to also up at II street, and
there was some one up there to whom be had to
communicate the time. The witness believed that
burratt was regulating tbe whole conspiracy.
Q. Then be was a general commander ? A. Yes, sir.
U. J)ld you dream that also ?
A. Mo. sir. (Laughter.) When Surratt moved up
Tenth slret-t, the witness could not see hi in cross V
street, be appeared to be In a burry and had not time
tn whisper, us It was evident bo had business up 1'
street, or in that direction. Whenever be came from
II street be came In a great bnrrv, walking as fast as
be could. Alter calling tbe time for the third time,
Surratt moved hurriedly up to H street, His lips ana
counienauce were very pule. The witness ooutdsee
ibis as Bin ratt stood looking at tbe clock.
Q. How could you see his lace, If you were sitting
on tbe boards, aud be was between jou and the light?
. Very readily.
Q. Through the back of his bead? A. Ko, sir: I was
a little behind blm, and was on a line witb tbe two
others who wi re standing further below towards the
ret tmirant; burratt's face was the picture of excite
ment and nervousness; tbe witness saw Burratt In
March last at tbe Jail here; he was admitted by Uene
ral Carrlngton to see If be could Ideutify blm as tkvj
man whe was under the gas light that nuht, and re
cognized him Immediately; ( id not tell Surratt for
what purpose be went there, but when he saw blm he
accosted him with "Halloa, John !" the lace the wit
nesabaw In the jail was the face be saw lu the front
of the theatre.
Q. And this Is 'he man (pointing to Surratt)? A.
Yes, sir; that Is the lace.
t.. Would you have known that face If you bad seen
It elsewhere? A. Yes, sir: it is a face that once seen
is not easily lorgotten; I did not request to go to the
jail to see Llui; I went because I was requested to
do so.
Mr. Merrick asked the witness what his religion
was, but withdrew tbe queslion upon an objection
made by Mr. Carrington.
The witness w as interrogated "at length as to his
testimony before the Military (JominiKsion at the
Arcenal at the tlmo of the ABsassluati n trial, aud

correctness. In some slight particulars, as to the
