THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRArnrniLjELTniAt FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1807. for the Evening Telegraph. A SAILOR'S ODE TO THE SEA. l)T CAl'TAIH JOI1X T. BMIT1IF.H8, OF TUB M1.R . . .. CHANT MARIXB. I. Our minds are thrilled with awe bejoud control, , O murmuring sea while I pensive and alone We linger by thy side ; thy blue waves roll And onward plunge, with ever restless moan, patching away into the dim unknown. While alltheygracefulbillowsbendandnod. We love to listen to thy lolty tone Which bids us look away e'er man's foot trod The "Garden of the Lord," or sin had cursed the sod. it. Thv atoms wore in Chaos, when in sleep Creation lay; when dread and silent night Spread her dark wing o'er all the mighty deep; Clod spake, and at the word the tinted light Mantled the east, till all thy waves grew bright With Morning's richest hue; then beauty rare Spread over thy surface, and the azure height Looked down and smiled upon thee, until there, Within thy peaceful waters, glowed her image fair. m. Thou heard'st the morning stars aloud rejoice, And all the sons of God their high harps sweep. When earth was new, then thy unfettered voice Joined in the hymn, deep answered back to deep, Then did thy glassy waves joyfully leap In praise to llim who dropped thee from His hand Like a clear crystal fount, and bade thee keep Thy stated bounds. IIow wonderful and grand He curbs thy foaming waves from passing o'er the land. iv. The wondrous record of the agoa past Were in thy presence sealed; upon young time Thou did 'at look forth, and from thy bosom vast Thou liftest up thy mighty voice sublime To noble minstrelsy, which lofty rhyme Floats down upon thy waters full and clear. We bow our ear to that soul-melting chime Of ancient song, until it doth appear That the far voice of ages soundoth strangely pear. v. While on the eartli change p" over al, Thnn m-t unalterable, and no decay" Has touched thy structure; thou hast knotfu the fate Of emwires and of crowns; and kingdoms lay In ruins at thy feet; races have passed away; And thou did'st see Oblivion's mantle cast Upon their wreck, whilst thou upon thy way Went forward changeless, as the ages passed, Rejoicing, while all nature seemed to crum ble fast. VI. With hand upon our mouth, with head low bowed In silent awe, we in thy presence see Tli at we are dust; while thou art speaking loud Of God ! of Tower 1 and of Eternity 1 Mysterious depths, vast secrets are with thee Of sacred trust; within thy strange dark breast Are volumes hidden, deep and wise, wise sea I Thy rolling waters never, never rest, Yet not by them is all thy mighty power expressed. VII. Hut let us for a moment look away Where bright the emerald isles in beauty glow, Among thy waves, and see the things that play In wonder o'er the deep; fleets with their wings of snow Upon thy sunny waters come and go; i'roin zone to zone, and from east to west, Do thy majestio billows surge and flow, Uearing the hope of nations on their breast Thou art, O murmuring sea ! so peaceful in thy rest. VIII. But ah ! how frightfully thy billows S well, MingliDg their voices with the thunder's jar, While Triton sounds upon his trumpet shell To call the awful tempests from afar, Till all the elements seem met in war With thy tremendous waves; and madly down Are powerful navies hurled and not a star Looks down upon thee, but the storm fiends frown, Each o'er the desolation waving his dark crown. IX. Upon the waves where Triton shows his wrath, Old fables tell us, Neptune, a proud king, Is drawn by Dolphins; while along the path In graceful figures, Nereids dance and sing, And all the foaming billows nightly ring With revelry beneath their tairy tread. The ancients feared those phantoms, for the wing Of sunerstition over them was spread; liut now upon the mind of man a clearer light is shed. x. Kow let our thoughts descend Into the deep: There, veiled from sight, beneath thy mist of waves. Wb-ere no cloud comes, nor angry sea-storm3 sweep, Strange, rich flowers blossom. There the diamond paves, And cems of pearl adorn the winding caves ; There trees in beauty grow, whore yet no bird Uas ever perched ; and the sea forest lave3 Its plumy branches where no joyous word, I'rom mortal lips, its clustering arbors ever stirred. XI. Out o'er those spreading plains and hills so bneht - In nature's loveliness, no dark cloud lowers, No chill of winter ever cast a blight O'er those bright gems, o'er those perennial flowers, Tor sin ne'er entered into those fair bowers To mar the charm; and there the foliage light In swayed by the enchanting flood, that pours " Its waters through those) feathery branches white As shrubs hung by the drapery of a frosty Jllglll. XII. And that rich network wrought of silvery sureua Shows forth the beauties of the Eternal Mind : Fair as the gauzy veil that brightly spreads The hieh etherial dome, and doth enshrine The world with grandeur; the same Hand doth twine Those rich mines 'mid the eternal rocks, with care, And ftMi the small lichens, that doth bind The morning in His garments, and doth wear Light as a covering, lie hatn maue mem iair XIII. rrofoundent kpr I man's knowledge never can liy searching And out thy mysterious lore; , Thou mockest at the pompous pride of man; All who go down thy mysteries to explore, ; Chaimed by thy tuneful dirge, come back no more To us, O, cruel sea ! They make their bed Deep in thy caverns, where the hoarse floods ronr; Yet not for aye shall thy proud waters spread . O'er our dear ones. O sea ! thcu shalt re store our dead. XIV. Yes, thou shalt yield them when Christ'B potent word Shall rend the tomb, and death's strong fetters break; And thy most secret depth shall then be stirred, For e'en the solid earth shall fear and quake; Beneath thy mighty bars Christ's voice shall wake Those Bleepers from repose; their souls shall hear The trumpet's sound, and quickly vigor take, While all thy bashful waves grow white with fear, The isles shall flee away, and thou shalt disappear. A Point of Etiquette. It may not be gene rally known that there are at present two Japanese embassies in l'aris. iiesides the legation of the Tycoon, there is a oourtly and accomplished representative of the chief of fatzuma. A grave question arose some time since between these oriental diplomats. Both of them had been entrusted with articles for the Exhibition. "Ilis Excellency" Iwasbita, representative of the chief of Satzuma, claimed the privilege of exhibiting under his master's flag. To this "Ilis Excellency" Mocou-Yamah opposed a strenuous resistance, claiming that the Tycoon's flag was the only one which the Commissioners of the Exhibition could recog nize. The puzzled Commissioners referred the matter to a special committee of two. These gentlemen had a protracted conference with the two ambassadors at the residence of Baron de Lesseps. It resulted in the following decision: First. His Highness the Frince of Satzuma shall exhibit under his own flag. Second. This flag shall bear the inscription, "Government of Satzuma," while the flag of the chief of Kwanto shall bear the inscription, "Government of the Tycoon." Third. Both flags shall be placed under the flag of the Japanese confederation, bearing tho inscription "Japan." The Russian Army. The Moscow News "ives Some interesting statistics respecting the Rus- I war the whole military force of Russia con sisted of twenty-eight divisions, comprising 112 infantry regiments, while now it consists of forty-seven divisions, with 188 infantry regiments ; and that the number of troops in active service, which in 1853 was 580,000, is now 800,000. At the beginning of the present year there were 26,000 officers, 705,799 soldiers, and 29,362 deustchics or assistants. According to the calculations made in the Russian war office, this force may be increased in a very short time to 1,180,000. Besides these, there are 300,000 irregular troops, so that the total military force now at the disposal of the Czar may be reckoned at a million and a half of men. A Model Advertisement. The . lines of some men fall in pleasant places. Witness the following advertisement from the London J lines : "The next presentation to the Vlcarasre of Chleveley for sale, subject to the Ufo of the pre sent Incumbent, now in his sixty-first year, with elegant parsonage, gardens, pleasure grounds, aud cilices, in a neighborhood distin guished by the amenities of polished society, ana corsmuiing a ricn vineyara oi ineiiris tlan virtues, with ample means for works of benevolence towards less fortunate folds as de rived fioin two hundred and eighteen acres of glebe, with the tithes of aUjoluiug parishes, extending over nine thousand acres, making the gross income ana vaiue to uuctuate, aucoru lug 10 averages, between 1000 and HHOO per auuum, with extremely moderate outgoings.
