He is sorry for it, he says; but he was at the time ra young, onfy twenty-live Years of aire, and mixed up romantic Action with authentic history a? men a hot-headed boy mtEht be expected to do. M. Jourdan, however, etandB npon his virtue. He did not write the book which bore his name at all. He had given the eomrulsMon to a 'young friend,' then in want of money, 'now honorably occupied n Journal Jem.' This amiable young trlend, h. IX' when be conveyed throe-fourths of M. He was young, and, though he appropriated the contents, he did not suppose that anybody could have been wicked enough to have in vented them. Thus the matter stands ; the Nouvclle Biosraphie Gcnerale' repronroduces the calumny without pretending to believe In it-and thus history is invented by our lively neighbors." OCEAN TELEGRAM. A telegram irom the superintendent of the International Ocean Telegraph Company re ports that the land lines of the company in Florida were completed May 28. Under the energetic superintendence of Major living and Mr. Sadler, a first-class telegraph line, two hundred and seventy miles in length, was built in thirty-seven and a half days. All material lor distribution, eight laborers, transportation, fornge, rations, etc., were sent Irom this city in April last. The cable communication with Cuba will be made early in July. N. Y. Eo. Jfost. Thb Choi.kra Fukgos. At a recent meeting of the London Pathological Society, the Presi dent, Mr. John Simon, who has just returned from the conference on cholera at Weimar, in troduced the question of the dependence of Asiatio cholera on the development of a low vegetable form in the intestines (cylindro tanium), which has been recently asserted in Germany by Dr. Klob and Dr. Thom6. The latter, gentleman has given to the President a specimen of the fungus referred to. This specimen, on the suggestion of the President, was given to a committee consisting of Dr. Sanderson and Mr. Halke, with a view to report on the matter at the commencement of sextession. For the statements of Dr. Klob and Dr. Thom6, the President referred to the original paper in Virchow's Archiv. The par ticular specimens before the society had been cultivated in glycerine. Tub Lucky Poulterer. The other day a etory was told of a lucky poulterer iu Eng land who got a large fortune from an old lady to whom he been uncommonly civil. This poulterer is now the subject of paragraphs iu the English papers. It appears that he is "a thoroughly good churchman, and is, or was, an elected member of the Church Institution," and that, possibly this may account for his politeness.
