THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPII PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 18C7. 8 C EN EH A L LONG STREET'S LETTER ON RECONSTRUCTION. The following is the text of Oeiieral Long gtreet's letter upon reconstruction, in reply to a communication addressed to luin b John M. 0. Parker: , Nkw Oki rans.Ia-. June 3. Yonr esteemed feVm-f thei6th iIi.m duly reel ved. I wh. to bve the opportunity to licit. f"1"' Con egrVeablv surprised to meet uih lalrneM and iraokuwui In a politician whom I l"ave been taught to believe uuoom gratingly opposed to the white people of the I have maturely considered your Bngeastlon tn "wiplv unite lueflorte to restore Loulslnna u, her fonner position Ju the Union, through te party now in power." My let ter of the IU of Anril. io which ou refer, clearly lu.l cntes a dfBlie for practical reconstruction and reoon rlliatlon. Viactieal men can turely UiHilngulab. between praotltal i eco-islrnctlon and recon stiucllou an au abf.trct question. I will en d'avor. however, with reuewed energy, to nieel your wishes In the mutter. The serlons d ilicully that I apprehend 1m the want of that wisdom which Is necessary for tne great work. I shall be bnppy to woik In any liurness that riromlfces reilel to our distressed, people and harmony to the nation. It matters not whether 1 bear the mantle ol Mr. Pnvmor the mantle olMr. Humuer.so that 1 may help to bring tue clory of "peace and good-will towards men." I ball set out by assuming a.proposltlon, that I hold to be self-evldt nt, viz . The highest of human laws Is the law that Is established by 8heVreat "principles that divided political parlies prior to the war were thoroughly uls cuhsedbyour wisest statesmen. When argu ment was exhausted reort was had to com promise. When compromise wai unavailing, inscui-slou was leutwed, and expedients were sought, but none ooul'l be found t suit the erueigeiicy. Appeal was fiually mada to the sword, to deterimue wnlch of the claim was the true coin-lrui-Uon of const lutional law. Tbe sword has decided in favor of the North, and what they clulmed s principles cease to oo principles, and are beoo'ne law. The views that we hold cease lobe principles becuuse they are opposed to law. It is therefore our duty 10 abandon ldea-t that are obsolete, and conform to the requirements of law. THE HIGHER LAW. The Military bill, aud amendments, are peare offerings. We should accept them as such, aud place ourselves upon them us the St irling point Jrom which to meet fu'ure political Issues as tbey arise. Like other Southern men, I natu rally sought alliance with tne Democratic party, merely because it was opposed to the Repub lican party. Hut as far as I can judge, there Is nothing tangible about it, except the Issues that were staked upon the war, and there lost. Finding nothing to take bold of except preju dice, which cannot be woiked Into good lor anyone.lt Is proper and right that I should seek some ; standpoint from which good may be done. IMPRACTICABLE ISSUES OF THE DEMOCRACY If I appreciate the principles of the Demo cratic party, Us prominent feature oppose tne enfranchisement of the colored man, and deny the right to legislate upon the subject of suf frage, except by UieSla es Individually. These two ttaturcs have a tenduuey to exclude Houtheru men from that party; for the colored man Is already enfranchised here, aud we cannot seek alliance with a party that would restrict his rights. The exclusive right of the States to legislate upon suffrage will make the enfrt'iuchi-.erneut of the "lacks, whether for better or for worse, a fixture among us. It appears, therefore, that those who cry loudest against, this new order of things as a public calamity are ti-ose whose principles would fix it upou us without a remedy. Hence It becomes us to Insist that sulfrae should be extended in all of the States, and fully tested. The people of the North should adopt what tbey have forced upou us; and If It be proved to be a mistake, theyibou.d remove it by the JruJy tinder re-mb'lcuu principles of Uniform Jaws upon suffrage. If every mau In the country will meet the crisis with a proper appreciation of our condi tion, and come lairly up to his responsibilities, on to-morrow the sun will smile upon a happy people, our Melds will again begin to yield their increase, our railroads and rivers will teem with abundant commerce, our towns aud cities will resound with the tumult of trade, aud we shall be invigorated by the blessing of Aluilguty God. 1 am, sir, very respectfnlly, your most obe dient servant, James Longstkekt. ROBERT E. LEE FOR PRESIDENT. The Evansville (Indiana) Dailj Sentinel on the Eoriter, one of whose editors was au olliuer lu the Federal army during the war, writes a double-leaded leader In tavor of General Kouert . Lee lor President lu 18rW: "We to-day nominate General Robert E. Ijee, of Virginia, as our favorite lor President in 1868. "General Lee stands before the world an American nobleman: a Christian, without os tentation; and a soldier without a peer, living or dead. "We ask not whether this purest and noblest Of living Americans, who led forth the legions of Virginia in defense of his native t-Hate lu au aggressive war upon Us sovereignty bv the Federalists of the North: or whether partisan legislation baa stricken down his rights as a citizen in the Federalists system of conceu tralioatiou. We see ouly tne man, with his spotless purity of character, nobility of person, true t'hrlstluu greatness, aud peerless honor. "Acknowledged at home and abroad as the trreateML and Uie nurest amougst us, we deem Tiim most amply Qualified to administer wan dignity aud truth, the principles (or which his Illustrious kinsman, Ueorge Washington, fouubt, and which the bitter passions of degene rat Nona have so lima ltuuerllled. "General Hoberl E. Lee Is the first choice of a Brand army ol Democrats lu the North, wuo are not afraid to urge his claim before the country for that position for which God especially en dowed him. Tbe timid men of the party may tremble when bis name Is spoken, but the brave applaud. "We believe that General Lee's nomination bv the Democrats of the North would be hailed 'with deliuht by every lover of true manhoad and nobility of character throughout the woriu." CONFUCIUS AND TIIE CHINESE CLASSICS. We learn that, as one of the consequences of tne opening ot me new man route oetween san Francisco and CBina, there has arisen in Cali fornia a desire to learn something of the history and philosophy of tbe thlsese. "To meet this increasing interest," says tbe San Francisco Bulletin, "we learn that a gentleman of Ban Francisco, thoroughly versed in Chinese litera ture, is engaged in exploration through the Chinese CIbmiics, gatbenuir perns aud pearls from the famous 'Four 13 oksol Confucius' the most distinguished ol the Chinese, philosophers. Tuts work will contain a condensed biography of the tage, as well as an account of the lite of bis principal disciple, Meuoiue. There will also be notices of some of the ancient Chinese empe rors and their ministers, and enough of ancleut history and geography to give interest and render intelligible the frequent references in the precepts ot the great Chinese teachers to the condition o( the country. The 'Four Books' are, and for many centimes have beeu, tbe Scriptures- the holy book of tbe Chinese. They are committed to memory, and all clashes every where throughout China cun repeat a por tion of them. There la little doubt that the continuance of the Chinese Empire to tbe pre sent day, and the uaiuru ot Chinese institu tions, political and social, are to be traced to the doctrines taught in the 'Four Books.' To-daj four hundred millions ot people respect the sayings of Contucius perlotm reli"ious ceremonies as ti e Bases did, and entertain the same general ideas on mental and moral phi lofophy, and respecting t-pirits and the future Btate, as recorded In the 'Fnut Books.' "The aphorisms and proverbs of this wonder ing reop 8 01 rrettt interest, aud will give us an Insight inte their modes ot thought and life, which we could derive from no other source. The most important, and perhaps in terrstlngpartof the woik, may be that wherein the teachings ot the "Four Books' are compared with the Christian Scriptures, and in which the present belief and practice ol tbo Chlaeso are traced back tbroueb centuries, up to tne years in which Noah lived."
