8 THE SEA-SIDE. LETTER FROM ATLANTIC CITY. lkTI.0APH BPaCIAL CORRVOMWC 1 Sw Ilorw, Atiakthj Cmr, J ane 6, 1886 Tor pw'04 B lol1g thBt dur4'nK u the memory efinen scarcely eyer mnueth to the contrary, ie "opening" of the season at this and all thcr favorite era-side resorts has been filed, , a decreo of the fashionable world, for the first of July, or thereabouts. We are rejoiced to tee that the proprietors of many of the leading loteU at the diUerent summer resorts In this State have determined to break Id upon this bsnrd custom, and thereby afford to such as dare defy the decrees of faihlon an opportunity to escsre from the heat and dust aad turmoil of the city, even during the month of June. There is, Indeed, no reaoou why one of the best months in the whole year should be entirely !? nored In the calendar of the sea-sido world. Aj ,venlf such must continue to be the case, those unfortunate people-tbeir number is wion-who have no particular standing in Jaihionable circles, can now drop down to the Ma-side, and there frrow merry and fat before their more aristocratic neighbors deem such a thing possible oi achievement. On the Vy. Saturday, the 1st of Juue, being the day appointed, under ttie new a aide regime, lor peuluK of the Bur Jloiue at this pleasiiut nmit'er resort, we determined upou repairing llnllier to witness-the ' opening" ceremonies. As ivory ouo of our readeis uhs. at some time In hlsorlier life, maue Hie louruey to Allautio City il is not necessary fur us lo dwell at any JeiiKtU U on ttie (scenes by the way. The topo- fraiiuy oi jerney is puivmuini i " i"j' or several miles out of Camden one pusses through wuai is aptly styled the K.ardeu of ttie United Stalec Tlieu comes a dreary monotony of scrub plues, and then a long streioa of low od level country, iu jnucn the same predica ment as wiih Holland before il whs laaeu by the Dutch, that is to say, under water. lu this latter part of the Journey, there wai so little of an attractive character lo be seen with out, that we sullered ourselves to study the faces and characters of our fellow-travellers. Jit lug established lu the smoking car, that wo xnlKhl dispel the heat, on Homoeo,.atulo princi ples by a oounler-lrrltant.wedlpcoverod that we were surrounded by Dutchmen, and enveloped by dust. As for the dual, it was extremely obnoxious; it crept into one's ears, and eyes, and mouth; it made lis way down one's back and into one's shoes: behaving, as dust always does behave, in a very disrespectful aLd annoying manner. The Dutobiuen, pro perly spiakiiig, were not lJulchiuen, since not one of llieni could boast of a Van prefixed to his rame. But the popular method of putting It has rendered the use of the word Uermau soiiiowIihI a Heeled, aud savoring of an aristocratic flavor. A person who makes his tlrat trip over the Cu union and Atlantic Hallroad at this season of the year, would be led irresistibly to the conclusion that the afore said railioad was the great highway to Bohemia or Bwitbla. At K llaroor City, and In its vicinity, the sweet German accent is beard on all sides and In all Us original fluency, file rise of this flourishing town is almost marvel lous, and can nuly be compared to that of simi lar settlements by the same nationality In the Northwest. Its population is piveu over, body aLd soul, to lager beer, pretzels, aud sourkrout, It is true; but the people are Industrious and thrifty, aud good, sober cllizeus in the main. At Egg Harbor City the load of jolly Dutchmen was deposited, aud t he dust aloue was left. Just at sunset the ocean came lu full view, and the fatigues and annoyances of the Journey Were forgotten iu that feeling of exhilaration which the rumble of its waters and Its bracing air always creates. 'The Opening." Repairing to the Surf House, we found the place enlivened by what is leuhuiually culled an "army" of meohanlus of all sorts aud de scriptions, engaged in putting the finishing touches upon ibe Improvements which are to render this commodious establishment even more comfortable and attractive than it was tluriug its first season under ttie management of Mr. William T. Caleb. But they were not aloue, for the trains of rJalurday afternoon aud Sunday morning brought down quite a large company of city denizens, who were anxious to vet a breath of sea air in advance of the thou sands who are soon to follow them. We learned, on luquiry, that many of the most desirable rooms ot this establishment have already been engaged for the greater purl of the season, and foj wuy of advice to those who design making It their abode for any length of time, we would say that the sooner they attend to the matter Hie better will be the accommodations tnat they will secure. One or two of the smaller hotels have been kept open all winter, for the accommodation of f ucsts who have a passion for fishing and shoot Bg, and a few others threw open their doors on baiurday last. In two or three weeks at the most, the United States Hotel and all the others will follow their example, and Allantio City by the 1st of July will again be swarming With seekers of pleasure and health. Sea-Side Improvements. In a stroll over the town, wo noticed many desirable improvements In progress. Several of the hotels have been newly palntdd, to others extensive additions have been ma le ami altogether about one hundred new bouses' liave been elected, half of them being cottages after the model of the famous "Cottage by the The residents of the town say that the im provements made since the close of tuo sjason of 1808 are greater in number than those of seve ral years past, taken altogether. The perma nent population, as well as the number of tran Blent pleasure-seekers, is rapidly increasing. The children of theresidents who have attended school during the past wluter number three hundred and fifty, which would sUow a total imputation of about two thousand. The shifting sands of Atlautle City have heretofore been one of the greatest drawbacks to its pleasantness as a place of resort. Tnis defect will be greatly remedied within two weeks. The railroad track on the main avenue Is lined from one eud to the other with lare heaps of gravel, and in a fortnight this will nil leleveiled,-,andthe ualsauceoi sand aud dust heard of no more. " The absence of an agreeable and aUractlvo drive whlcb has likewise beeSa eu.e of u.oyiumu, jo widu ouuuu m uo remeuiud Th City Council nam uiMii.iin uuea Mm uni., e three thousand dollars for the laying out an 1 "IUB unrimgo roau iicross tllft marshy grouud to the fast land, which It is n peeled, will be entirely completed before the close of the present season. It will be 11 vo miles In length, and will fairly rival in tittraoitve ness any similar drive in thecouulry. In tho way of Insuring the observance of stood order and common decency on the purl of suuii persons as are disposed to transgreMs In these xespecls, a new system in thelicousingof niucos Tor the Bale of liquor has been a lopted, ruij promises to add much to the pleasantness of the place. Hitherto there has been but Utile restraint thrown about the liquor tratric, and the consequence has been that the most dis orderly element In the Dopulation of Philadel phia has made a resort tb Atlantic City one of Ihe most uproarious events in their uproarious lives. But the City Council has deolined to reissue a license to any of the streot booths and low groceries with which the place formerly abounded. lr this lew rule is faithfully carried out, and -every tufrlnirement upou It rigidly Jmnlshed, Allantio City will be rendered ouo of be most attractive summer resorts on the Whole Aviantlo coast. The Weather ppeara to have settled down in a peaceable mood, and promises tu remain thus for some time to come. Last week the thermometer crept bp close to the nineties, aud all the accompaniments of summer beat attended the rise. But towards the oloso ot the week there was a change, whicii culminated on Mundav -niffht in a mineral masiiuerado of the nimuni. A furious storm of wind aud rain set lu about sunset, aud continued to rage during tu freater portion or tne uigrn. The roar of ha waters was almost deafening, and the surf would have been maguifloent or bathing bad ttie storm occurred a few weeks later lu the season. As it was, such a thing was not to be thought or. for tue coia wiua soul htvxr t kronirlt one's frame, even as be lay enveloped in blankets and coverlets. Just eoutli of the BurfJlouxe, at the distance of about nve miles, we uisoerueu .,, iK.ni i.ul K.iiiitmm da Cuba, boldiuu out hrsvely against tho fury of the tempest. Being Ictlgod so aenr the shore, the wind had wheeled THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, trienil into position between Hand the beach. "r j on HnlurdRy several persons were ablo to romd the ves-el. by plunging through this trrnebpron pnthwny on foot. J!y Mondny morning, however, the wind had mi'derated. and the rain had ceased to fall, islnco then it has been steadily Improving, and a bath In the ocean is not only possible for those whoarsnot afflicted with a predisposi tion to rheumatism, but highly luvigoraliug as well. The Prospect of the Reason, according lo all who affect wisdom in that direction, are much better than they have been at any previous date. It In confidently antici patf d that the season of lH06wlll be thrown Into entire insignificance, when compared with the rush and excitement of that which tins Just been inaugurnted. Hut the large number of new houses already erected, with the additions made to the old establishments, and other Im provements now in rrogress, will tend greatly to relieve the crowding that would have re suited from a stagnation in the building lino. As nsual, the dHlly excursions from Philadel phia, which are rendered so pleasant by reason of the shortness of the railroad Journey, will be oneoftho main features.
