Jt,?frKa,,V.n.t once one of the largest and
most Influential there. Four or five services are
lield each feunday.besldes dally service through
the week, a good proportion ef which are de
voted especially to the deaf mutes. The ex
periment has proved a success there, and dranoh
missions for the deaf mutes are established at
Albany, Rochester. Baltimore, and Washing
ton. .In this city a mission was also cotumeucod
a lew years ago, and aoout two years hi nee
was 11 ii a ly established at Calvary Church (that

27,. 1 y. il"ated on Front street, above Callow
hill. The Uev. V J. Clero. D. D.,son of the
above-named co-laborer of Mr.Gallaudet. is the
rector of this church, and has endeared himself
greatly to the "speaking" as well as the "silent"
portion of his flock. .Here, on every Sunday
afternoon, may be seen gathered a respectable
opngregailon (certainly the most quiet iu the
It.v). eagerly receiving "the truth as it Is in
Jesus" from their pastor. A number of them
are communicants, and one of their number is
vestryman In the church.
It frequently happens that a double servloe Is
given In ihe evening, when the full sorvlce
being read and a sermon preached by one
lersymau, is interpreted by suns by the rector,
for the benefit of those dear mutes who may be
present. Their own Bible class meets on Hun
day morning, and their lyceum aud debating
society on Thuisdny evening, in the school
house adjoining. These services are all publlo,
and the feats in Calvary Church are all free.
The meeting at St. Luke's Church on last Tues
day evening wasealled for the purpose orjay
Ing before the Christian philanthropists of
Philadelphia the details of this work,
aBd to devise means by which the
Mission could be permanently supported.
Addresses were made by Kev. Dr. Morton
I in the absence or Bishop Stevens, the Rev. Dr.
Gallaudet, Kev. Dr Clerc. Kev. Mr. Louusberry,
1 Mr. Pyall (a deaf mute), the chief instructor at
the Institution, Mr. Learning, and also, to the
evident delight of all present, the venerable
Laurent Clerc. who is making a short visit to
the city. Uf course, the addiess of Mr. Clero
was altogether in signs, but he was ably inter
preted by Dr. UaliaudeU A large number of
deaf mutes were present, aud seemed deeply
Interested In all of the proceedings. It Is hoped
that the good people of Philadelphia will
-.respond nobly to the appeal about to be Issued
. by the Board ofCoausel that has been ap
pointed, and by their generous o fieri tigs esta
blish Calvary Church for Deaf Mutes firmly, as
one of the many Institutions of which Phila
delphia is so Justly proud.
