    THE LITTLE COEEX.
"Twna a tiny rosewood thing,
I'.l'on lionnd and glittorinjj
"With its Btavs of silver white,
Silver taUet, Mauk mvl bright,
Downy j'illowed, satin lined,
That I, loitering, chanced to find,
'Mid the dtist, the scent, the gloom
Of the undertaker's room
Waiting empty all for whom ?
Ah ! what love-watched cradle bed
Keeps to-night the nestling head?
Or on what soft, pillowing breast
Is the cherub form at rest
That ere long, with darkened eye,
Sleeping to no lullaby,
Wliitely robed, and still and cold,
1'ale flowers slipping from its hold,
Shall this dainty couch enfold ?
Ah ! what bitter tears shall statu
All this satin sheet like rain,
And what towering hopes bo Lid
'Neath this tiny coffin lid f
On whose tablet shall appear
Little words that must be there,
Little words cut deep and true,
Bleeding mother's heart anew
Sweet, pet name, and aged two.
Oh I can sorrow's hovering plume
Round our pathway cast a gloom,
Chill and darksome as the shade
Hy an Infant's coffin made ?
From our arm au angel Hies,
And our startled, dazzled eyes,
Weeping round its vacant place,
Cannot rise its path to trace,
Cannot see the angel's face 1
WORDS OF WISDOM.
FROM SIDNEY SMITH.
IDLB.NKB9.
If idleness do not produce vice or malevolence,
it commonly produce melancholy. Let overy
man be occupied, and occupied in the hlg, hest
employment of which his nature is capable,
and die with, the consciousness that he has done
bis best.
FRIENDSHIP.
Life is to bo iorhfied by many friendships. To
love and to be loved is the gieatent happiness of
existence. If I lived under tbe burning sun of
the equator, it wonld be a pleasure to me to
think that there were human beings on the
other side of the world who regarded and re
spected me; I could and would not live, if I
were alone upon the earth and cut oil' from the
remembrance of my iellow-creaturcs.
It is not tbat a man has occasion to fall back
upon the kindness of his friends. Perhaps lie
may never experience the necessity of domg so;
but we are povorned bv our imaginations, mid
they stand there as a solid and impregnable
bulwark apainst all the evils of life. Friend
shins should be formed with poisons of all ages
and conditions, and with both sexes. 1 have a
iriend who is a bookseller, to whom I have been
very civil, arid who would do anything to servo
me; and I have two or three small Inendnhips
among persons in much humbler walks of lite
who, I verily believe, do me a considerable
kindness according to their means. I am for a
frank explanation with friends in cases of
affronts. They sometimes save a perishing
friendship, and even place it upon a firmer
basis than at first; but secret discontent must
always end badly.
CHEERFULNESS.
Persons subject to low spirits should make
the rooms in which they live as cheerful as pos
sible, taking care tbat the paper with which the
- wall is covered should be of a brilliant, lively
color, hanging up pictures or prints, and cover
ing the cbimneypiece with beautiful china; a
bay wirdow looking opon pleasant objects, and,
above all, a large tire whenever the weather
will permit, are favorable to good spirits; and
tbe tables near should bo strewed with books
and pamphlets.
HABDNE99.
Hardness Is a waut ol minute attention to
others. It does Lot proceed Irom malignity, or
a carelessness of inflicting pain, but from a
want ol delicate perceptions of those little things
by which pleasure is conlerred or pain excited.
HAPPINESS.
The longer I live tho more I am convinced
that the apothecary Is of more importance than
Seneca; and that half the unbappiness in the
world proceeds from little stoppages from a
ditch choked up from food passing in the wrong
place, iiom a vexed duodenum or an agitated
pylorus. The deception, as practised upon
liunian creatures, is curious and entertaining.
My friend sups late; be eats strong soup, then a
lobster, then some tart, and he dilute these
eeculei.t varieties with wine. The next day I
call upon him. lie is going to sell his house in
Por.don, and to retire into the country. He is
alarmed lor his eldest daughter's health. His
expenses are hourly increasing, and nothing
but a timely retreat can save him from ruin. All
this is the lobster; and when over-excited
nature has had time to manage this ttetaceous
encumbrance, tbe daughter recovers, the
finances ate in good order, and every rural idea
effectuailv excluded lrom the minJ. Exercise
witbout laiieue; generous living without ex
ceed; early rising and moderation in sleeping
these are the apothegms of old women; but if
tbey are not attended to, happiness becomes to
extremely difficult that very lew persons can
attain to it.
