Amongst the new musical publi cations worthy of note we see an tion , J uple numbers, of the "Christ ma Girl "bTcHrl 481 Broadway, N. Y. Also, in one ntimber, "Love My Mary" and "Do I Love 1 hee ? ' the former a playful Irish melody to Mooie'a words; the latter, in our opinion, a work of much deeper significance than a sons Dv Irauz Abt to the same words. "Do I i'bink of the Uajs, Jeatmiu ?" is a ballad in the true Hootch style, distinguished lor Its depth of feel ing and strikingly characteristic forms of ques tion and answer. "Leave us Not" is a rlninttve little jrem; and "Good NlRiit," In the same num ber, and also for soprano or tenor, is very beau titul and difficult as well. The "Slumber'! son may be numbered aniongut the finest, although all have abundant merit. Ah Adjourned Meetibo of thb South Strket Brtoqb Commission was held yesterday. Mr. John Welsh presided. The Commission is appointed to superintend the construction of a bridge over the t'chuylkill at South street. A communication whs recoived from Mr. C. E. Lex, protesting against the proceedings of the Commission at Its previous meeting, on the ground that a quorum was not present. Mr. Dropsie moved that the proceedings of the previous meeting be adopted by the present meeting, which was done by calling the yeas and nays on each resolution. Mr. Baiid stated to the body that the Com mittee on Superintendence had employed the district surveyors to mark the initial line of the centre of the bridge, on the east and west side ot the Schuylkill, and that a stone with the letters S. B. had been placed on each side to mark the spots. The following gentlemen comprise the com mittees appointed by Mr. Welsh: On Law, Messrs. Pindlay, Phillips, Dropsie, Mann, Mar cer, Holmes, and Lister; On irans and Esti mates, Messrs. Kastwick, Sperine, Ellis, Leigh, Pollock. Miller, and Brown; On Finance, Messrs. Clark, Drexel; Lawson, Boni, Lex, Kmytb, and McCann: On Superintendence, Messrs. VYetherill, Kater, Field, Btruthers, Nichols, Buird, and Ferry. Meeting of School Controllers. Yesterday afternoon the Committee on Property of the Board of Control held a meeting in relation to an nnexplainable charge which bad been some what mysteriously made to a specification for the erection of a new school house, northwest corner of Sixth and Coates streets, and for which $44,500 has been appropriated by Councils. For this amount the building was to be erected, in general similarity to the new Fif teenth Ward school house, Twentieth and Coates streets, with such changes only as were agreed upon by tbe Committee. Tho building being now nearly ready lor the third floor, it was dis covered that an attempt had been made to vir tually recede iiom tbe original specification in some respects, to the great detriment ot the sec tion, which attempt, however.will bo effectually smothered. The building, when erected, will be a hand some one, of the dimensions of 76 by 86 feet, the material being Trenton brown stone. Every precaution has been taken for the proper trans mission of lipht and air, and the directors of tho cection are determined it shall contain all tho essential requisites necessary for the healthful comiortot the pupils. The Commencement Exercises of the Zane Street Girls' Orammar School were held yester. day afternoon, in the school building. The large school-room was filled to its capacity by the scholars and their friends. Tbe young ladies were nearly all dressed in white, aud the appearance preseuted was one of rare beauty. The exercises contested of recitations, singing, addresses, and presentations. Of the latter, two beautiful green Bohemian glass vases were presented to Miss Webb by a pupil, and a beauti ful crayon head of a child, by Miss II el en Ijukers, to the same teacher. Addresses were made by Mayor McMirhacl, Professor Blche, Edward Shippen and diehard Ludlow, Esqs. The latter spoke in ieeling terms of the de parture of Miss Webb for Europe, the sorrow her absencewould causo the and great gratifica tion at her safe return. After the exercises of the atternoon were concluded, the graduating class, with a number of invited guests, passed an evening socially in the school-room. Arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia. FIRE AND BURGLAR PR00FSAFES PJJORE ADOUT LILLIE'S CHILLED-IRON SAFES IMPORTANT FACTS WHICH TIIE PEOPLE KIIOIXI) 1V1 J iV J-Ll V IN W X til J A' FACT T II I.I.I R'H rTTIT.I.F.D-IRnN R A PITS have been lately Introduced for the last twelve ytars. nnd sold to those havlmr the laruest amount of VbiUHbkN, bh the best and most ihorounlily lturlar l'tool t-nte; and, up lo ihelsst three years, It has been sn rare to hear oi one ol Iilllie's Sales bavin betni ii.unea oy DiirKiBrs. as to nee or hear ot m while blackbird or a while elephant. Fact II. It Is notorious that thrt nrnfolnn nt th burxlar has advanced at arm Id pace wilhlii the last elshl jesrs, and what was IhoroUKhly bursiar-pruof then Is hoi so now, which accounls lor the fact that within the last three years very few of 1,11 lie's Sales have beeu robbed, and the secret annnvmnns circulars distributed by other safe-makers lat- terly. showing a vrrv frw esses onlv. Is IheslronsMit evidence that b t a v'ry small number have been roDi.ea tonus time, notwiiustanditiR llie large Dum ber lu use, and the amouui at stake 11 successful. Fact III. There are two. and only two. ecnernl and leading print-idles upon which all burKlur-proof sales are tonsil ueted. The one Is pouring liquid Iron bem ecu aud around barn or wrought li eu, hard en! d streel, or any proper combination of metals. This principle Is ad pled by l.lihe, lit the Chilled Iron Sale, aud covertd and controlled bv his lot. Lorn putent. I s other Is made nrj of Isvers nf nlalea. sriliiThv.ni metals, held lokether by bolls or rivets, or both. To this principle there are various objections: The cost Is double. The wrought Iron plates, wlilch are the strength of thesafe, are outside, and are operated upuu oy in w nuie catalogue oi ourglars loots. Tbe holts or rivets are easily lorced by suitable tools, wiih or without powder, and cannot be sustained. 7 he. former principle, adopted by Little, avoids all tbese object ions, can be made any thlckneHS, and withstand sny aniouut of resistance repaired; avoids the rivets, bolls, etc.; has no w roiight iron outside to be operated upon by burglars' Implements. Fact IV. Mr. Utile, the Patentee, so soon as he learned that It was possible wiiu ibe modern liu- roveu tools lor ourgiars to grind torougu chilled rou or hardened kleel. b Kan ejtnerlmentliur to avoid the dilliculiy, aud alter much labor ana expense he has 1 erlccled a system lor chilling Iron and combin ing metals that Is euihely proot against the burglar's drill, or any other of his tools, even the wedge, war ranted to staud the baidesl tent practicable lor any uurgiar iu oiaav. j m nruoi oi uis success, tue lot low lug cerlilicate Is now offered irom the Novelty Works, Hew York: . Ofkice Novelty Irom Works, Ntw York, lblh Jjecember, lbfls. M' inri. LrtiHa Llllie A .Soiw bKKTi.iBKS:-We have subjected the sample of Chilled Iron you furnished us tu the most severe testa (as regards drill lug through it) that we could bring to bear upon It. and without success. It Is our opinion that it can only be penetrated by the use of a large number of drills, and the expendi ture of much power, with days of lime. And weiniiik it impossible lor a burglar, with his time and pow er, tu peuelrale It at all. Youts truly, Isaac V. Holmes. Superintendent. Lyman U. Hall, Foreman. And tbe following extensive Irou mituufacturers In Philadelphia, Huston, and Chicago, after the most thorough tests, find the result to be substantially the same. Aud their principal Iron Workers so certify: Messrs. Merrick A Sou, Souihwark Fouudry, Phila delphia. '1 he tinkler A Williams Works, Boston. Mass, The Union Foundry aud the Northwestern Foun dry, Chicago, 111. Fact V. The proposition made tho public hereto fore Is uow renewed : I will lurulsh Sales or Vault Uoors, of same Bize and capacity ol other best makers, and at one-lhlrd less price; aud the same may be tested when llnishtd, and I will furnish the man lo lest the work of any other muker, aud he shall fur nish the man to test my work ; and tbe party so order ing may accept the work wklch stands the most re sistance, In any way or mauuer practicable for a burglar lo work. Fact VI. I would now say to any of the owners of Lillle's Sates, that, la view of the preceding facts. If they leel the need of additional security. I will ex change with them, on lair terms, givlmr them all the lute Improvements, and the Increased security , which Is claimed to he bevond the reach of Rurulars. until some new system shall be developed In the working OI iron.wuicu wumu uow seem uuiuiy posaiuie. Fact Vii. It is true that the Sheel:Iron or common Saie, as bow mode, under ordinary circumstances (and when not crushed by the lull ot walls or timbers; usually saves the written matter, but If tue lire Is se vere ii lias to oe copteo, tor tue ihk win boou luue out; besides, the sale Is twisted up aud useless. It is equally true that the Chilled-Iron Safe saves the wrltteu matter iu a perfect state, that It does not lade out or require copying, aud that the sale Itself Is ready for further use. Any number of trials lu fires, cerlllied to, prove these lacts, aud lf any of the sale venders who are distributing secret, anonymous circulars lo injure the reputation ot I.ILLIK'S SAFE, aie not satlshed with these statements, they can have the opportunity ol testing by lire oue of their own Safes wlih L.lLXl.E'b, ou equal terms, whenever they so decide. Fact VIII. In answer to tbe story circulated by lutetested parties, that 1.1 1 lie's Safe had gone up, aud had ruined Liilie, etc., I would say that al no luue lu the last two years could Litlne k Sou halt supply the demand loi Sites, aud were under the necessity ttt ioimmg a huge block compauy, with a very large capital, tu nitel the demand; aud Mr, Lewis Lillle, Sr., is now the president ol that couipauy, which is located ou the Leluware. iu i'enusyl vunlii, near Kuston, aud Is the lMgesl Safe Works probably lu existence, aud will be able to simply all Uetuaud lor Sales, Locks, Chilied-Iron Vaults, elo. In conclusion, I beg to call the attention of my patrons aud filenas, und the public, (o the facts here presented, aud to say that I am very thanklul for past lavors, and that I am prepured to furnish LIL LlK'S IILKOI. AH AND FT UK AND III' 110 LA R PROOF SAFES, VAULT DOORS, CHILLKL) IRON VAULTS and COMBINATION LOCKS, all al short notice, warranted to be the best and cheapest lu uiurket. I also keep constantly a large assortment of second-hand Fire Proois, taken In exchange for Llllle's Burglar Proofs, of the best-known makers, all put iu good order, and oilered at below usual auc tion prices. 3X.
