THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, MAY 27, 1807. CITY INTELLIGENCE. I re additional local itkms skx outbids as. THBLiQuoR-SKLLEns' Mebtino on Satcrday. The action which produced so remarkably unanimous a closing of drlnklmr bouse? on Sun day was the result of a largely attended meeting ?i . ?u- , on. of K-itJ Commissioner Given Ute hbinn's), in Broad street, above Chesnut. Colonel Owen Petted called the meeting to order, and moved that Mr. Given nreBido, which was aarrecd to. Sir. Johnson acted as Secretary, and Mr. Carson as Treasurer. Given, on taking the chair, announced Vhat the object of the meeting: was to take into consideration Ihe law closing the public houses after 12 o'clock at night, and on the Sabbath. Ho recommended In all that was said a tew words as possible, and the entire exclusion of politics. Colonel Robert Window moved to exclude all who are not intercbted in the retail liquor busi ness. Captain Hinder nndcrstood this call was lor tavern-keepers; that the cause was a hist one, and the meeting- ouzht to have no secrets. Colonel Wjnslow remarked that his resolution did not apply to the members of the press. Mr. Foster moved an amendment, that those persons who aro not tavern-keepers bo excluded from rnterlnn Into the debate. The original resolu tion was withdrawn, aad the amendment dropped. - - ' A motion to permit all persons keeping taverns or restaurants, and also mineral-water and sarsa parilla manufacturers, to be present and enter into the debates, was carried. A motion was offered that the present officers act as the oiliceis of tee permanent organiza tion. Agreed to. A letter from a wholesale wine house, offoiW any assistance that was desired, was BubmiUcl. The following letter was then read: 1-1 ARRisniTRQ, May 22. 18C7.-James Freeborn, Esq. Dear Sir: Your note ot the 21st InBtant I have. The bill No. 70 of general laws you refer to, was passed on the tth of April in the Uouee, as It passed the Senate, and in th3 shape it appears in the general laws. No amendment appears to have been proposed to except Phila delphia, aod my record does riot exhibit auy opposition bring rained to the bill. I mail you Nos. 131 and 135 of record, as you request. Truly jours, John A. Smcll. A member said that all present fel aggrieved at the action of our Representatives. They had paid agents at Harrlsburg who suflered them to be oppressed in the halls of the Legislature, The liquor men Bre the most oppressed people in the country ; the Government imposes an onerous tax. This letter was no palliation for the conduct of the members ol the Legislature. The tavern-keepers have a rlht to know who voted for and against the bill, so that they can get their Just deserts at the coming election. Vt A motion was mad to lay the letter of Mr. fcmull on the table. William J. Evans, 8ergeant-at-Arm s In the House, said that the bill was rushed through in the House with other bills, and every member voted for 1. The yeas and nay were called on It in the Senate, both political parties voting for and against. Mr. Foster moved to receive and file the let ter, which was agreed to. Mr. John Jenkins oiiered the following reso lution, which was agreed to: Wlureaa, At the last session of the Legisla ture of the State was passed an act regulating the time ot closing and opening hotels in this Commonwealth, and as the representatives from thia city deny that they voted for such a law, or knew of lta passage, therefore; be it Eesoived, That a committee be appointed to act with the committee appointed by the meet ing held by the German citizens, to ascertain who of the representatives Irom this city voted for or against the aforesaid law. Mr. Foster moved that a committee of five be Appointed as a central committee. Agreed to. A committee of three from each ward was appointed to act in conjunction with the ceutral committee, which consists of V7. H. Harrison, James Folley, Thomas H. Green, O. W. Petted, George D. Glenn. Mr. Given stated that, with several others, lie had waited on the Mayor, who was favor ably disposed towards the tavern-keepers, and did not think that the law applied to restaurant keepers who sold "soft drinks." HecoLsldered the closing of doors at 12 o'clock suilicient. On Sunday the doors must be closed, and he hoped that the tavern-keepers would not sell as bofdly as heretofore, The complaints to him had not come only from the temperance people, but also from those who attended church. Captain Binder remarked that the Mayor had no tight to give auy instructio ns. The law waa in existence, and, if violated the violators were amenable. He urged the '.avern-keepers nnf tn ell anv liauor on Sunday. He con sidered that by themselves they could do nothing, but the workingman was the one who could assist them. He said "dunking men are honest men." The speaker urged upon those present not to sell any liquor with closed door. The tavern-keepers should close, so that all drinkers shall be on their side. The poor man, after bis hard week's work, would then, on being refused bis drink, bs against those who made the law. Do not sell with closed doors, do not nell on Sunday, and the people will be in your favor. Riftbt will always conquer, and an un just law cannot stand. It was moved that every tavern-keeper close on Sunday, and that it be ascertained tbrouih the Ward Committee what other occupations are allowed to keep open. The question was called for, but Mr. Thomas Hell said the motion was superfluous, as it would have no effect on the law. The law, which was so stringent against selling liquor on Sundays, said nothing against drug stores, candy shops, cigar shops, and various other businesses pursuing their callings upon that day. The motion was carried. A member said that he did not complain of the Sunday law, but of that part which com pelled them to open at sunrise and close at 12 o'clock at night. It might under some circnm stances be very diQicult to comply with the first part of the law in relation to opening at sunrise. Tho Central Committee was then announced Monday afternoon, at the same place. to prepare an address, the Ward Committees to act in concert. The meeting adjourned at 4i5 P. M., to meet at the call of the President. Bobber of a Farmer.
