JTYjri DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, MAY 2d, 1867. 8 THE RELEASED TRAITOR. Tndcvtndcnt. TiaU Micht to have teen tr ried long, long ago. His protracted detention in priuon, without a trial, Justly brought reproach tr Oovernment. Thla reproach is now fearfully increased by his discharge on ail It was hitherto supposed that the Government, lirjg either not ready or not willing to bring him to trial, had no other . alternative than to eontinue him in custody. It now seems, how aver, that the prisoner might have been re ieasod at any time within the last two years, 3f only the officers of the law had bethought themselves of admitting him to bail.' Can any good reason be assigned why lie should have l.een bailed a few days ago, rather than a few weeks ago, or a few months ago, or a year and a half agoT None! Hut he never should fcave been bailed at all! Does not everybody know that men charged with far less heinous crimes are not admitted to lailT Are small criminals to be denied the privilege of bail, and great criminals to enjoy it f If a man who robs a bank must remain in Jail till Mb trial, shall a man who levies war against the Government, fires hotels, starves prisoners, and slaughters half a mil lion of his fellow-men, bo obsequiously in vited to put on a pair of green kid gloves, take a new hat and cane, and step out of prison to receive the congratulations of his friends? Our sense of justice revolts at uch a proceeding. We grant that Mr. Davis should not have been incarcerated for an undue term without a trial. No apology can be made for the Government's unusual and unjust delay in arraigning him before its bar. But to admit him to bail, like the com monest of culprits, is a mockery of Justice a confusion of moral distinctions a national disgrace. Nothing in the punishment of Mr. Davis as a state prisoner, thus far, shows him to have been guilty of any greater crime than picking a pocket, or committing assault and battery. To say that treason is a bailable offense is next to saying that it is no offense at all. The greatest law-breaker of modern times 6hocks the civilized world by his crimes, fills the land with mourning, darkens the nation's history with his shadow, and yet the sum total of his guilt is roundly estimated by the law at one hundred thousand dollars 1 This man stands charged with connivance at the murder of Abraham Lincoln. Has any ether man, so charged, been so bailed 1 Why not release John II. Surratt on similar terms ? As both men are charged with the same offense, and as neither has yet been brought to trial, why should not both bo treated alike ? In view of all the circumstances, we have found it impossible to regard the release of Mr. Davis as other than a hideous blunder. We have no words adequate to express our mingled regret, indignation, and scorn at the act. Some of the principal actors in it are men whom we personally love and revere. Of course, they have acted from the noblest and purest motives; they are incapable of acting from any other. But they have, nevertheless, lent thoir countenance to a' proceeding which, in our judgment, is as great a disgrace as lias fallen upon the nation since the public drunkenness of Andrew Johnson on the day of his inauguration as Vice-President. . Alarming Scene in a Theatrb. Aocording to the London Spectator, Miss Madge Robert son, who is playing the heroine in Mr. Andrew Halliday's new drama, A Great City, now per forming at Drury Lane Theatre, narrowly esooped a serious accident. The play is de signed to meet the popular craving for realism, And one of the incidents is the driving of a JIansom cab, probably taken off the stand outside, across the stage. As it entered, says our contemporary, and the driver smacked his whip, and the lady who had eummongi it (Miss Robertson) jumped hi, pit and galleries, all densely crowded, Bent out a roar of applause bo sudden and so loud that the horse, fright ened out of his wits, became almost ungovern able, backed the cab on to the footlights till it hent the brass rod which protects them, and hut for the strenuous exertions of the supers, Who "whoohooed" in the most natural and tinstagy style, would have shot poor Miss Robertson head over heels into the orchestra, with the cab upon her, and the horse most probably on the top of the cab. The beast at last recovered itself, and galloped a short dis tance in a most spirited manner, and Miss Robertson escaped unscathed. A New Strike. The Pall Mall Gazette Bays: "An odd development of the practice of strikes has just occurred at the Carr-house colliery, near Rotherham. This time it is not the men who have struck against the masters, but the boys who have struck against the men. A fine had been imposed on several of the lads for breaking lamps, which they deemed unjust; the rest of the boys, forty in number, made common cause with their comrades, and refused to go down the pit unless the fines were remitted. The result was that the working of the pit had to he suspended. The men who had gone down were obliged to return, and some four hun dred miners are in consequence thrown out of work, Perhaps the men may now discover that there may be two sides to the question of strikes, and may be enabled in some degree to enter into the feeling of the masters." A New Printing Machine The London Press News says: "Various rumors are afloat in England respecting a machine constructed to print twenty thousand papers in one honr A great deal has yet to be done to bring it to perfection. It is a copy of Wilkinson machine, brought out some years Bince in America. It prints on a continuous sheet of damped paper (unrolkd from a cylinder) on both sides, registering as exact as book work on a hand press. Stereotype pUtes of the pages are used, but of a smaller curve than those for the Applegarth or Hoe. When the sueet has received the impression on both ewes, n is cut by a Bimple contrivance and car riea lorward, a complete newspaper, to the cieuvery-uoard."
