The superstructure of each pier to be of bard
and durable atone.
The racing in six courses, of headers and
stretchers dovetailed; the rise of each course 2
feet; the cubic contents of blocks varying from
20 to 6B leet; the faces, axe or peau hammer
work; beds and Joints good Joint work; lewis
and dowel holes to be drilled if required; back
ing to be ot rubble stone.
The top to be paved with stones from one to
two feet in thickness, with good natural face,
and Jointed to lengths of 5 leet and raudoiu
-Widths.
The stone to be delivered at such points, at or
near Marcus Hook, and to such persons as may
le designated by the proper olhoer or agent of
deliverable under like conditions.
The cribs upon which the piers are to rest are
to be sunk in depths varying from 20 to 21 feet,
or thereabouts, at ordinary low-water. Length
of each at bottom about 77 feet by 84 in width;
at top 74 by 32. To be of hemlock wharf timber,
to work 10 Inches least dimension.
There will be required for the superstructure
Of each pier about
7ouo cubie feet of hammered facing Stone,
giving
2800 superficial feet of face, and 7800 superficial
feet, of bed and toint work.
1360 cubic feet f paving stone, giving 1700 feet

Proposals will be received at this Department
until 12 o'clock, June 6, 1867, for furnishing all
the materials ana performing the work re
quired in the const ruction of a Brick Building
for the use of the Department of Agriculture,
to be erected on reservation No. 2, in this city,
according to plans and specifications that
can be seen at the ofllce of the Commissioner
of Agriculture, where-full Information with
regui d to the proposed building can be obtained;
said proposals to be either for the whole build
ing, or separately for the different kinds of
work.
No proposal will be entertained from any
person who Is not known to be a practical
builder.
Bidders are requested to stale the shortest
time possible In which the building is to be
completed, the work to be commenced In three
days after the signing of the contract.
The Department reserves the right to reject
any or all bids, if It be deemed for the interest
of the Government to do so, and no bid will be
received that does not conform to the require
ments of the plans and specifications and of this
advertisement.
Ninety percent, of the amount of work done
aDd materials furnished, according to contract
price (said amount to be ascertained by the esti
mate of the Superintendent), will be paid from
time to time as the work proceeds, and ten per
cent retained until the completion of the con
tract and the acceptance of the work by the
Department.
Every proposal must be accompanied by the
bond of two responsible persons In the sum of
twenty thousand dollars, that the bidder will
accept and perioral the contract if awarded to
him. the sufficiency of the security to be certi
fied by the United Slates District Judge, United
States District Attorney, or Clerk of the United
States Court.

rates to coverall labor necessary for putting
the works in good repair, such as removing old
work and obstructions, receiving, caring for,
framlDg, putting togeiher, and replacing the
materials to be used or moved.
All work done to be subject to Inspection and
approval before payment is made, and twenty
per centum to be deducted from any payment
that may be made before the completion of all
the labor.

cavating aud removing the rock and other obstruc
tions from the bed of the Mississippi rlverut the Rock
Island or Upper Rapids, by means of coder dams and
subaqueous blasting or chiselling.
Contractors will ho required to furnish all boats,
machinery, etc., and to perlorm all the labor neces
sary lu the prosecution ol the work. There are about
(k'.wju cubic yards ol rock to be removed, dlstrlbjied
unequally ul dillerent points on the Ruplds, and the
work must be doue during the low water season, Inter
fering us little as practicable with navigation.
Contractors will slate the pi ice per cubic yard for
which they propose to do the work, which will be let
as a whole, or in sections ot such leuglu as the engi
neer in charge may determine.

all bids, and no bid wilLbe considered unless the party
