Hlfl DEPARTURE FOR CANADA.
Jefferson Davis left the city very wuietly on
Monday night for Montreal. Hardly a dozeu
1ersons were awareof his departure at the time.
Us family followed him yesterday. At the
depot of Hie Hudson River Railroad, lc Thirtieth
street, there was quite a gathering of curiosity
seekers during the afternoon, who bad con-
f regaled to see the departure of the ex
lebel chief, but witnessed only that of bis
family. At twenty minutes to 3 o'clock
the 'bus of the New York Hotel drove up to
the depot, loaded with bagsage, and wltn a
colored man sitting on the box beside the
driver. A spruce, middle-aged gentleman,
with greyish hair and mustache, and a ruddy
countenance, Jumped out first, and assisted a
tall, handsome, matronly lady to alight. Those
were followed by two servants, having lu
Charge a little child. These personages were
the waft, of jenerson Davis, bis brother nd
child, and two of his servants. The" started

DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE ALBANIANS.
Albany, N.Y., May 21. Uulte a crowd of per
sons gathered at the Delavan House to-night,
expecting to see Jeff. Davis, but they were dis
appointed, as be passed directly through on bis
way to Canada.
ARRIVAL OF THE DAVIS FAMILY AT TROY.
. Tkoy, N. Y., May 21. The following despatch
was received in this city at noon to-dav;
New York, May 21. To Conductor James B.
Baldwin:
Please reserve two sections for Mrs. Jefferson
Davis on three forty-five train here for Mon
treal. F. 1 Marsh.
Mrs. Jefferson Davis and party, consisting of
five persons, including two colored servants,
passed through here for Montreal to-night, on
the 10 o'olock train. I learued from them that
Mr. Davis himself passed through over the
same route last night entirely incognito, not
being once recognized or suspected during the
whole trip from New York to Montreal, where
be arrived safely this morning.
The narlv nassine through to-niirht did so
very quietly, though something of a purely ex
tempore crowd gathered aoout Conductor Bald
win's sleeping car, in hope of catching a glance
of the fallen man, in which they were disap
pointed. The party quietly took to their
berths, and the train passed out of the depot ou
time.
ARRIVAL OF JEFF. DAVIS JJf MONTREAL A VERY
QUIET RECEPTION HIS FRIENDS TO VISIT HIM
TO-DAY, ETC.
Montreal, May 21. Jefferson Davis arrived
here this morning, accompanied by three or
four gentlemen, and looking very well. His
reception was very quiet. He drove at once in
a covered carriage to Mrs. Howell's bouse. His
arrival was not generally known for some
hours. It Is supposed that the chivalry will
call on him to-morrow.
Valttd States Census for 1860 and I860.
According to the census of 1860, the organized
States and Territories contained 31,443,821 In
habitants: of whom 488,070 were free colored,
and 3,963,760 were slaves of African descent. In
addition to the above U is estimated that there
were 360,000 Indians retaining tbelr tribal char
acter. From the tabular view of the progressive
population of the United States, from the
original census or 1790 to 1900. by William
Derby, we find results which have thus far been
most singularly verified by the addition of three
per cent, per annum from year to year, starting
with last census:
xir. rovutatlonA Year. Papulation.
m 81,443 821 ! IH'10 H,0,;77

1864 84,908,82511870 40.617,700
JbC5 36.0H8.32l
Total estimated Increase 9,174,379
The telegraphic statement headed "The Census
Bureau of Statistics," is calculated to mislead
tbe public as to our probable rapid increase in
fiopulation, notwithstanding the late depopu
atlng war. Tbe conclusion arrived at is that
in I860 the entire population of the States and
Territories was 34,605,882, white and black;
increase, 3,662,661.
Tbe above calculation, based on a ratio of
Increase showing the population in 1866 to be
36,089,378, Is probably much nearer the truth
giving an Increase la six years of 4,643,066
ouls.
It must be remembered that not only EaroDP,
out Asia, is now contributing largely to swell
our population. .
