German Opera. Last evening the New Ches
nut Htreet Theatre was tolerably well filled with
a lashionable audience, to witness the perform
Pce of Halevy's majestic chef d'auvre La
Juice. This opera is lull of classic music of
extraordinary excellence, but has not been
rendered here often enough to make it popular.
The work was chosen to present to us in her
finest rote the most glftedpWma denna the Ger
mans have yet brought this way, Madame
Nathalie Seelie. This lady is an excellent actress,
a true and finished artiste, and a beautiful
woman in form and feature. Her debut last
evening aa "Bachel," stamped her as a great
favorite, and raised an enthusiasm in
the audience that we have rarely
witnessed at the debuts of artists more noted, if
not more famous. The applause that followed
the trio in the third act between Madame Seelig,
Herr Franz Himmer ("Eleazer"). and Herr
Theodora Habelman ("Prince Leopold"), was
really overwhelming, and an encore was given
In great spirit and good taste. The great
length of the opera was . not observed last
evening, tor it was performed in such an earnest
. manner and with such evenness throughout, that
every one seemed anxious to witness each suc
ceeding scena.
"The Bells of Shandon." Dan Bryant's new
play by Messrs. Motlord and John Brougham
was a success. The piece Is one ol interest
lrom the beginning to the close, the characters
were well acted, the scenery and effects capital,
and Dan Bryant as "Barry O'Leary" was one ot
the very bett of this artist's personation; it will
pe given again to-night. On Monday Emma
Waller appears.
Mr. John Buouobam visits our city on Friday
next, expressly to appear for his young friend
Dan Bryant's larewell benefit.

Here is Punch's little verse on the young
telle s new uima ruuuer-ear.
Lydia hath a mimic ear.
Truth to tell, 'tis very tiny:
Cast in caoutchouo bo queer, 1
But pink as shell of Ot:ean briny.
' Envy pale may frowning chide,
Lydia, whom th' elastio pleasoH,
In comfort takes her morning rido,
With lobes that feel no nipping breozea.
.' Lydia hath a miinio ear, etc.
Lydia's limbing lover burns
' To kiss her crimson cheek so sweet he
Marvels deeply when she turns
,' ! A cold deaf ear to his entreaty.
But let none sconi Lydia's taste
Who whiisper nonsense ev'ry minute,
An auricle composed of paste
lii worth a thousand vows breathed in it.
