wtardat DM an eventful day In the eventful
,,Kl"of iS.meR..toTi. From carl bour
inmeroas t1tor sought ber residence fn Bii
Uen" tdrect, to bid her good-by, and pa, thetr
Urt tribute of admiration and lespect to her
mbIu. troodms", and amiable qualities. Bou
quets, some of which were the rarest "PclineM
if art were broueht in, trntll the elegant par
lors ncemed to be conservatories, and the cards
four principal cUlwns, clerdjmoo, diplomats
iolHtclans, literary ceU brities, artists, and other
friends, were sent up from the continuous stream
t carriages that "stooped the - why," until the
fair artiste became bewildered. Then an ordeal
f Hand-shaking of the (leneral .rant sttle, and
the Babel of fnrewetls, in hall-a dozen languages,
preceded the departure lor the steamer.
Yet amid this busy seene Madame Ristori uia
rot iorpet the prompting of her Parous
heart, tor she found time to mnlre mon.y liberal
donations to the poor. Rarely has J
fccen the recipient of such flattering attentions
from the most dtinBUl-lie.l citizens of the
metropolis as Madame Kisiorl and her
were jesterdav. The rich and elepant souvenirs
wb.cfi theyrectved formed a mallcarpo ln
themselves. All the Hal ans of : note, many
celebrities in the art world, and many of the
renrescDtatives of our republican aristocracy,
Jcde down o be steamer Yesterday aiternoon
to sw Madame Bistori off. The scene at the
1oekon the deckhand in the cab, n, where
Madame Bistort was surrounded by the inti
mate friends she has made here, was unprece
dented. The leave-taVinga were warm, affec
tionate, and enthusiastic. .
Her iusband. he Marquis del Orillo, her son
fleoree, and her beautilul daugUter, Mad'lle
Binnca, came In for a chare iu the general
enthusiasm, and deep reircts were expressed
again and again at parting. But it was au retoir,
not adieu. Mr. Grau has been long anxious to
enter into a new engagement with the great
tragedienne, but the wished to retire from the
stage and devote herself to the care ol her
family. The unprecedented enthusiasm with
Which she was received at her larewell appear
ance, the flattering serenade which followed,
and the unvarying triumphal character of the
past season determined, her yesterday; and she
signed a contract to appear under the manage
went of Mr. Grau, during the next spason,
at the Grand Tacon Theatre, Havana,
and In the United States. The contract
was signed on board of the steamer
a few minutes before its departure. Madame
Jtistori expressed herself to ttiose present, alter
signing the contract, that she could not be in
duced to return to America under any other
management than that of Mr. Grau. She used
the following words: "When the artist signs an
engagement with Mr. Grau, halt the battle is
framed." One of tbe last acta before the sailing
ol,. the steamer Ville de Paris was to present Mr.
Jrau with a cane de visile, on which was written
"To her good Irlend and excellent manager, J.
Grau, souvenir ol Adelaide Hisiori del Grillo."
Mr. Grau also presented Madame Kiston with a
silk American flag, on which was the single
word "ikuoertir."
One ol the conditions of the contract Is that
Giacommctii's new play, Marie Antoinette, will
be produced lor the first time, and under the
management of Mr. Grau, in New York. This
is in accordance with the author's previously
expressed wish, tl at this work should be
trough i out in a republican land, as the senti
ments he proposed introducing in it would prove
distasteful to monarchical ideas of liberty.
Bcbillcr'8 celebrated Jeanne d1 Arc will be also one
ol the teatures of the next season in Havana
and tbe United States. The scenery for Marie
Antoinette will be painted in France and Italy,
and the costume will be entirely new. Filly
thousand Irenes were deposited by each of the
rontracting parties with a leading banker of
this city. Madame Rlstorl will make her first
appearance next season at the French theatre
on September 15i -
All the lines were cast off, and tbe noble
Bt earner, one of the staunched and swlitest of
the popular French line, moved out from the
pier; handkerchiefs were waved, adieus ex
changed, and each eye strained to catch a part
ing glimpse of tbe Queen of the Drama. The
crowd on the pier was immense, and every
point where a view of the steamer could be ob
tained swarmed with huuan beings, N, Y.

The Census of 1870,
The Rureau of Statistics is making prepara
tion to take the census of 1870, through lb In
ternal ltevenue organization. Director Dtslmar
has been superintending a series of statist ical
exercise drills.the result of one of which sfTirJa
remniknble proof of l!ie thorough orcanlzutlon
of the various bureaux of the Treasury De
partment, lie has tuken a census of the num
bers of I Li; entire population of the country
already, and that too without auy expanse
whatever, excepting for stationery. The census
was quietly but thoroughly taken durlna six
weeks of lsst November and December, nnd Is
in most, cases the result of actual count la the
ltevenue Districts.
The details will not be furnished tn the
public until they have undergone careful revi
sion and arrangement.
The returns front a few of the remote moun
tain districts of the country are the only ones
not deemed satisfactory. The present census
shows the total population of the thirty-seven
Hlatca in November aud December last to have
been Hi. 100,256, and of the Htates and Terri
tories taken together, 34,505,882.
In in oh t of the Bout hern States there lias been
a deciease of population. In the Eastern
81 nles a small Increase, and in the Western
Mutes a large Increase. Tue results are
supported In every instance by the State cen
suses of 1805, so far tie taken.
The con. parlson wii u the census of 1869, Is as
follows: Thirty-seven. Biates, a few of which
were then Territories, numbered 31,218,021 in
hnbitants, and the total StaUs and Territories
,'il,413,:i21. Ttietotnl Increment since 18U0 has,
therefore, been 3.0(12.581, which, In view or the
late extended Rebellion, demonstrates an ex
traordinary recuperative power of the country.
The population of the District of Columbia is
given al 118,807, with a majority of several thou
sand females over mules.
The Attorney-General on Reconstruction
Tbe importance of the forthcoming advice
upon the Reconstruction acts from the Attor
ney General, has rendered public expectation
somewhat impatient. It has been srenerallv
supposed that his Interpretations of the vari
ous and novel quest I -ns involved, would all be
embraced in a single oolnion shortly to be pro
mulgated, but it is snid the practical operation
ol tbee measures, by developing new ques
tions lor solution nimost every any, may keep
that official's hands full of the subject from
time to time, though the first advisory commu
nication will doubtless embrace the main priu-
ipies. ... ,
The Altorney-Clpneral will leave to-morrow
f r New York, where he will remain only a
short time. The object of his visit is to consult
nis ocuust wun regard to a disease or tue eye.
Conscience-Money.
The conscience fund of the Treasury Denart-
ment was still further Increased to-day by the
reception of two letters, boi h from New York,
one containing fifty and the other thirty dol
lars, which the senders consider to be the pro
perty of the Government. These cases, for the
most part, rose from business transactions
during tholate war.
