The Commission appointed by the recent act of As sembly to oversee the construction of a sub stantial bridse acrocs the Schuylkill at South street, convened yesterday aiternooa. ; Mr. John Welsh presided. ' The supplementary act, which directs that the : work of building the bridge shall be commenced by tbe 1st of July, 1867, was read. A motion was adopted inviting the Chief Engineer and Surveyor to meet the Commission at its next meeting. The proposed action was discussed by Messrs. II. M. Phillips, William B. Mann, Esq., Mr. Eastwlck, and Mr. J. P. WetherilL The suggestion of Mr. Wetherill, for the ap pointment of a committee to conter with the Law Committee of Councils, was agreed to, after some remarks from Mr. Welsh upon the propriety of acting in baimony with Councils. Messrs. Mann, Eastwlck, and Struthers, were : appointed a committee to wait upon tbe Chief : Engineer, and procure his plans for a bridge at South street. , . The chairman was authorized to appoint Committees on Finance, Law, estimates, and Superintendence. School Buildings. In addition to the sohools mentioned as reported favorably, in our report of tbe proceedings of Select Council yesterday, one is to be built onChristian street.above Front, ' in the Third Ward, and another on Fourth street, above George, in the sixteenth Ward. Tbe citizens ol the Seventeenth Ward, adjoin , ing, are suffering sadly for the want of school accommodations, and have been for a long time. A resolution has been passed in the Board of Control requesting Councils to set apart $45,000 ontof the million loan, tor the erection of a ? roper school house in the Seventeenth Ward, bis will remedy much of the evil. The want of proper school accommodations is severely felt in some of tbe sections, and it has been wisely determined to erect a number of new buildlnes, not only spacious, but pro perly ventilated and lighted. A Comparison. The following was the marking of the thermometer at the Merchants' Exchange, at 3 o'clock P. The closing exeroises for the term ol St. Michael's Parochial School, under the care of the Christian Brothers, took place last evening. Tbe building was crowded with the friends of the scholars. ' The pupils showed much proficiency in the exercises, which were enlivened by music from the band, composed of boys attached to the institution. Capsized. A boat containing three men was capsized off Kensington about 6 o'clock last evening. One of the men was entirely ex hausted, and bad It not been for the timely arrival of a boat, the three would undoubtedly have perished. The accident was witnessed by the passengers on the Pilot Boy. A Painful Casualty.
