FIRE AND BURGLAR PROOFSAFES
yORE ABOUT
i
LILLIE'S CHILLED-IRON SAFES
IMPORTANT FACTS
MII14 1I THE I'EOri.E NHOI LD
MAKE A NOTK OF."
Fact I. LTI.LtF'S CiriLLED-IRON 8AFF.S
have been largely Introduced fur the last twelve
years and sold lo lhose liftvlnu the luiget auioiint ot
valuables, as ihe best and n ost thoroughly Iturglar
Piool bale; and, Up to the lain three years, It has beea
as rare to hear ol one ol Llllle's bales having been
rubbed by hurglnrs, as to see or hear ol a while
blm kblrd or a white elephant.
Fact II. It Is notorious that the profession of the
burglar has advanced at a ranld pace within the laU
elghl years, and what was thoroughly hurglar-proof
then Is not so now, which account for the lact that
within the hist thrpe years very few of Llllle's
bales have been robbed, and the secret anonymous
circulars dlNirlbuted by other safe-makers lat
terly, showing1 a t'u-.y f(ui cases onJv, Is Die strongest
evidence Hint b t a very small number have been
robbed to this time, notwithstanding the large num
ber lu use, and Hie amount at stake 11 successful.
Fact 111. Tin re are two. and only two, general
mid lending pi incldles upon which all burglar-proof
sules are coiiMimied. The one Is pouring licpild
Iron betwreu and around bars of wrought lren, hard
en! d Mreel, or any proper combination of meials.
This principle Is ad pud by Llihe, In the Chilled
Iron Sale, and covered aud controlled hy his letters
patent.
The othrr Is mado up of layers of plates, ordirTerfnt
metalH, held together by bolts or rivem. or both. To
this principle there are various objections: The
cost Is double. The wrought Iron plates, which are
Ihe strength of tbesale, are ouiside, and are operated
upon by ihe hole catalogue ol burglars' tools. The
holis or rivets are easily lorced by suitable tools,
with or without powder, and cannot be sustained.
7ik fnrnirr jo itiri;,-, adopted by Little, avoids all
these objections, can be made any thickness, nini
withstand any amount ot resistance required; avoids
the rivets, bolts, etc.: has no wrought iron outside to
be operated upon by burglars' Implements.
Fact IV. Mr. Llllle, the Patentee, so soon as he
learned that It was possible with the modern Im
proved tools lor burglars to grind through chilled
irun or hardened steel, began experimenting to avoid
the dlllicully, and alter much labor and expense he
has perfected a system lor chilling Iron and combin
ing metals that Is entirely ptoot against the burglar's
drill, or any other of his tools, eveu Hie wedge, war
ranted to stand the hardest test practicable for any
burglar to make. As a proof of his success, the fol
lowing ceriilicate is now otlered Iroui tae Novelty
W orks, New York:
Ofkioe Novklty Iron Works.
Nkw York, lsth December, 1S66.
Nr.wt. Lm it LilUe A- Hon:
Gh.ntj.kmkn: We have subjected the sample of
Chilled Iron yon furnished us to the most Hevere tests
(us regards drilling through it) that we could bring lo
bear upon It. and without success.
It Is our opinion thai it can only be penetrated by
the use of a large number or drills, and the expendi
ture of much power, with days ol lime.
Aud we think it impossible lor a burglar, with his
time and power, lo penetrate it at all.
Youis truly,
Isaac V. llm.MK.s. Superintendent,
I.y.man O. 1 1 a i.i.. Foreman.
And the following extensive Iron manufacturers In
Philadelphia, ltoston, and Chicago, alter the most
thorough tests, lind the result to be substantially the
tame.
And their principal Iron Workers so certify:
Messrs. Merrick &bou, bouthwark Foundry, Phila
delphia. The Fink-ley A Williams Works, Boston, Mass,
The Cnlon Foundry and the Northwestern Foun
dry, Cbicugo, 111,
Fact V. The proposition made the public hereto
fore is now renewed: I will lurnlsli bates or Vault
Doors, of same size and capacity ol other best makers,
and at one-third less price; aud the same muy be
tested when linisbtd, and 1 will furnish Hie man to
test the work of any other maker, and he shall fur
nish the man to test my work ; aud the party so order
ing may eccept the work which stands the most re
sistaiice.lu auy wuyor manuerpractlcablu lor a burglar
lo work,
Fact VI. I would now say to any of the Owners of
Llllle's bales, that, in view or the preceding fuels. If
they leel the need of additional security, I will ex
change with them, ou lair terms, glvluu them all the
late Improvements, and the inci eased securlly, which
Im claimed to be beyoud the reach of liurglars, until
some new system shall be developed In the working
Ul nuu, wuiuu wuuiu uuw seeui iiaruiy pussioie.
Fact Vii. It is true that thebheel-Iron or common
trine, us now made, under ordluury circumstances
(and when not crushed by the lull ot walls or limbers)
usually saves the written mutter, but if the lire Is se
vere u has to be copied, for the Ink will soon lade out;
besides, the sale Is twisted up aud useless.
Il is equally true that the ChlllPd-lron Safe saves
the written mutter In a perfect stale, that it does not
lude oui or require copying, and that the safe Itself
Is ready lor lurther use. Any number of trials In
tires, certified to, prove these lucts, and If any of the
sale venders who are distributing secret, anonymous
circulars to injure the reputation ol LILI.IE'b bAFK.
aie not satlstied with these statements, they can have
the opportunity ol testing by lire one of their own
burrs with ULLlE'b, cn eiiual terms, whenevea
they so decide.
Fact VIII. In answer to the story circulated by
Interested parties, that Llllle's bule had goue up, and
had ruined Llllle, etc., 1 would say that ul no time In
the last two yours could Lllne A bon halt supply the
demand lot b les, uud were under the necessity of
Pinning a large block company, with u very lurge

on the Delaware, in Pennsylvania, near Eastou, and
Is the largest bale Works probably lu existence, and
will be utile to supply till demands lor bales, Locks,
Chllled-lrou Vaults, etc.
In conclusion, I beg to call the attention of my
patrons uud li lends, and the public, to the lads hero
