cnenta. Paris, April 26. This week, has been com
plctely overwhelmed whu the fashions; every
thing has boen overturned. We have had too
many jmrttes, too much excitement; and the
entertainments ol one einele night could have
tern divided Into fix weli-tilled evenings.
We have had Mud'He i'atti's adieu at the
Italieno, Mrul'lle Nilfson at the Marchioness
o'Aoust'c, M'me Rosa Csillatf at the Salle Heiz,
and the new violinist, Leonard, cvt-rvwucre.
The latter is followpu by about a pieiad ol
artists, among whom arc Berlioz, (Jouood,
Schuloir, Herz, etc. All ate either to hear,
applaud, and bo enthusiastic in their praises ot
the new star.
Pasdcloup has closed his concerts, and the
last of the season was a perfect bouquet.
The theatres at the Exposition are all putting
on their last layers of paint and pill. Tuerese
cave tho Eldorado a most nuique soiree last
Tuesday. Admission tickets were not to be had
under twenty lraucs, but retreshments were
jrratis. The song, the "goose tender," or
gardrusc d'oies, in which she brinns lorth tho
most expressive gutturals.
The annual jtrpositwn des Beaux Arts opened
at the Champs Elvsees on Mouriav, aud it is said
the pictures are above the average merit.
High lne Is in a continual state of qui vive
With princes coming and princes uoing.
Tho Duke of Edinburgh has lust arrived, as
also the King of Sweden's brotner and the
brother of the Tycoon of Japan,
The Kina and Queen of Portugal are exoected
On the 1st of May, the King ol the Greeks at tlio
end of (his mouth.
As to the King of Prussia, my opinion is he
Will deter his visit until the Luxembourg ques
tion is settled.
The Empress pays long visits to th i Exposi
tion, and examines the constructions in the
park with great attention. The only serious
objection to be made to the said Exposition is
the dust. Wise lady visitors should be advised
to wear out all their old clothes on their exhi
bition excursions. It is a place where lull dress
is perteetly unknown. Not so the Hois. The
lightest silks, softest chamberies, and best of
eatina daily drive, ride, and wuik round the
lake. Embroidered silk is the great feature.
Muslins are to be trimmed with flounces round
the bottom, aud these are boun I with narrow
silk ribbon. Unmitigated empire is the grand
ambition. Costumes are very varied, but all
have a narrow crinoline underneath, so narrow
that it is only two metres aud twenty centi
metres round.
The petticoat to be worn under this is mide
of calico, and has two flounces round the bot
tom, which are pressed together by the crino
line, and look like close borders; over the
crinoline is worn another flounced petticoat,
which measures two metres and nlty centi
metres. Then comes the underskirt of the costume,
over which the short tunic, which should be
two metres and eight ceuti metres in width
when it falls straight, and three metres when
looped up by a bow or buttons. It is hopeu
these measurements will be found uselul, and
that ladies who will wear short dresses will also
adopt flounced underskirts.
The long sleeve is still an exceptional sleeve;
it looks very well in Sultana eauze.
AU the tailors being on a strike, our Parisian
seamstresses are trying their bauds at tailor
ing; it is rather a complicated afl'sir.
Chignons are lighter than formerly. The
Breton style is a periectuna.
Jet and pearls are mill on the rise.
Somebody has written the following abou
the girls:
God bless the girls.
Whose golden curls
Hlend with our evening dreams:
They haunt our lives,
Like spirit wives,
Or Naiads Uauut the streams;
They soothe onr pains,
They 1111 our brains
With dreams of summer hours,
God bless the girls,
God bless the curls,
God bless our human flowers,
The wives are quite as deserving of blessing
as the girls, and we submit the following:
God bless our wives,
They fill our hives
With litllo bees and honey;
They eaue life's shocks,
Thy mend our socks,
Hut don't they spend the money!
When we are sick
They heal us quick
That is, If they do love us;
11 uot, we die,
And yet they cry,
And place tombstones ubove us,
Of roguish girls.
With sunny curls,
We may In fancy dream;
But wives true wlvei
Throughout our lives
' Are everything; they seem.
Mr. Samuel Clougb, who published the
'Kew England Almanac" one hundred and
sixty-five years ago, was cautious to a fault in
his prognostications of the weather, lie tells
his readers that perhaps, from the 15th to the
23d of January it will be very cold weather,
if it "frese by the fireside or on the sunny side
of a fence at noon." So in April "i rhaps
wet weather, if it rains; now fair weather if the
gun shines; and windy or calm."
A young preacher who had just started
on his travels as an itinerant, was one even
ing holding forth on the Deluge, and after
describing the manner in which soah built
the Ark, and filled it with animals of every
kind, by pairs, closed in a solemn tone, thus:
"You must know, my dear hearers, that it
vras an arduous task for Noah and his sons to
get a pair of whales into the Ark."
' When Canning was challenged to find a
rhyma for Julianna, he immediately wrote:
"Walking in the shady grove
With my Julianna,
For lozenges 1 gave my love
Iii-e-euo-U'ttii-im."
A dramatic author once observed that he
knew nothing so terriblo as reading his piece
before a critical audience. "I know but one
' more terrible," said Compton, the actor, "to
be obliged to sit and hear it."
The reason so many marriages occur im
mediately alter a great war, is that bachelors
become so accustomed to strife that they learn
to like it, and alter the return of peace they
enlist in matrimony as the next thing to war.
The author of "Lillith Lank" authorizes
the statement that it was twice refused by a
magazine, "in spite of an earnest protest on
the part of the author and repeated assurance
that it was goou.
The latest dodge to evade payment to the
author of the "JJlack Crook" for the name o
1.1.1 nipcrt is that of a California manager. His
spectacle is "The Black Hook."
Algernon Charles Swinburne's next pub-
lie appearance win ue iuuo j ruiumu
essays on William Blake, poet and artist.
It is said that toothache may always be
cured by holding in the hand a certain root-
that of the tootn.
Alice Cary has written a novel entitled
"The Bishop'B Son," and the scene is laid in
New England.
