Rentree of Mrs. Lander. Our readers
will be delighted to hear that Mrs. Lander has
been prevailed upon to give a series of repre
sentations of the new play of E.itabeth at the
Academy of Music, commencing next week. We
feel sure that the enterprise will prove a great
success, and will add new laurels to the already
magnificent crown of our "Queen of Tragedy."
Professor Tripp delivers the second of his
celebrated Lectures on "France since 1848," in
IJDiversity Hall, Ninth, above Chesnut, this
evening, at 8 o'clock. This second lecture gives
s vivid portrayal of the thrilling scenes in the
French capital during the stormy days of Feb
ruary aud June, which marked one of the
greatest political convulsions of modem times.
The first leeture was a fine success, the audi
nce being moderately Urjje, very select, and
highly appreciative.
A Dante Encyclopedia. Professor FerrazzI
has lately published the third volume of his
"Kncyclopiedia Dantesca," a valuable work,
which will be completed in four volumes. The
matter embraced in it involves, as the title im
plies, every species of knowledge relawng to
Dante and Lis times,; biographic, historic,
critical, and pbilologic, in the shape of indices,
extracts, commentaries, disquisitions, essays,
ete. TLe bibliographic section Includes co
pious lists and notices of foreign translations
of Dante, and works concerning him and his
writings, as well as the various Italian edi
tions and works of the same character. Pro
fessor Ferrazzi shows himself, says one of his
critics, to be a genuine Dantesque scholar and
enthusiast, and has devoted to his task a deal
of single-minded industry, which will fitly be
met by the honorable status to dq asaiguea io
his book in the literature of Dante. In addi
tion to its specialty, his book contains inte
resting notices of Petrarch, Ariosto, and Tasso.
A Neat Sarcasm. Kmile de Girardin closes
a recent editorial article very neatly. lie had
explained his plan for avoiding war, and at
the same time saving the honor and sensibili
ties of both Frenchmen and Prussians. "But
this plan," says he in substance, "has not
been legitimately born in the cabinet of a
minister, but illegitimately in the office of an
editor. What credit should be given to his
rash predictions, which have no merit except
that of being verified by events t What thanks
should he have for his warnings ? What re
compense does he ask ? A hearing. lie cries
to you: 'Strike, but hear.' The blockhead!
Don't hear, and strike'
"Always Aim at What Becomes You."
Most ridiculous advice. Just imagine a man
setting up his best coat for a target or blazing
away at his new spring beaver.
The man in jail who looked out of the
window of his cell and exclaimed, ' 'This is a
ffrate country!" is now generally admitted to
liave spoken within bouiuh.
'"You would be pretty indeed," said a
gentleman, patronizingly, to a young lady, "it
your eyes were only a little larger. My
eyes may be very small, sir, but such people
as you don't Jill them !"
A Davenport (Iowa) woman, who wasn't
married when Bhe expected to be, sued the
faithless for $sll-2Ii, expenses for lights, re
freshments, etc.
A young man in Ashland, Ohio, recently
jilted by a coquette, who married another,
rcovered $2:50 for presents made to her dur
ing courtship, and six cents for injured all'eo-
tions. .
A young lady of Montgomery, who was
recently caught smoking a cigar, gave it as
her reason for the act, "that it made it smell
as though there was a man arouuu."
