Nkqlkcted to Keep a Ukctifier'b Book.
Many distillers, either through ignorance or
nenlect, keep none of the books required by
law wherein to enter all tne details of their
business transactions; aud lor neifloctlnii to
keep a rectifier's book any rectifier can be
prosecuted and his establishment closed.
Mr. Henry Wagoner wus arrested on this
cnarKcand appeared before Commissioner Illb
ler yesterday.
Alfred T. Young, deputy collector, of the
fourth District, sworn Heury Wugoner, the
del ndant, bas paid the special tax as a recti
fier for the place at Beventeenth and York,
street; he pntd his tax during last February; I
visited his place on the eighteenth of April
and found it in operation; I found a
lead tub partly full of liquor; there was one
barrel full lying on the lloor with no marks
upon It, and another partly full under the tub;
the rectifying estabhsumont was back of tne
house of Mr. Wagoner, who is a distiller. Mr.
"Wagouer is enuRed la the distillery business
at Broad and Cumberland streets, with T.
Meyer, under the firm amo of T. Meyer & Co.;
Mr. Wagoner does not keep a rectifying book;
I left word at bis place on the 18th of April for
him toappearnt me Collector's ofllce the next
morning.and produce his books; I saw Wagoner
ou the lOib of April; 1 asked bim for his book,
and be said li had uo book; that he
left It out to his place; then I said we
would go out to lil" place and get it;
when we got ready to go he said he had no book
at all. He never produced a book for rectifying
at our olllce. Mr. Wagoner produced a little
memorandum-book; 1 did not see it; (the book
was exhibited); I am not an expert in the distil
ling of spirits, but have been engaged in the
drug business, where it Is necessary to have
some knowledge of tbe process of distillation;
I went to Wagoner's place about five o'clock in
the afternoon and saw the barrels I have men
tioned; I am familiar with tlie process of recti
fying; and saw the half-barrel under the leading
tub receiving the drippings, and by an exami
nation of the full barrel I found It to contain
rectifying spirits; I looked about the place aud
found no barrels marked. (Several receipts
were given in evidence, showing the payment
of the Bpecial tax for a rectifying establish
ment.) At the conclusion of the testimony, and the
summing up by the defendant's counsel, the
Commissioner bound Mr. Henry Wagouer over
to appear before the Grand Jury, in the mm of
S1C00 bail. Mr. Frederick Meyers became surety
for the appearance of Mr. Wagoner.
A Philadelphia Welcome to the Irish and

ing of the denomination in general was held to

Fairbairn, D. D.; Rev. Mr. Wells, from the Free
Church of Scotland; and Rev. Dr. Denham, of
the Irish Presbyterian Church. These learned

rian churches of the United States. The assem

Presbyterian divines If the Academy of Music
had not been pre-engaged, It would have been
Becured. The Committee in charge of the
arrangements were Messrs. James McMillan,
Matthew Newkirk, George H. Stuart, William
Purvis, and William Getty. Kvery inch of room
