Chicago has once more become the subject of a devastating conflagration, tbat terror to all, the Fire King, having, visited the heart of tbe city, lajing waste one of the flaent hotels of which our fair city once could boast. Tbe alarm was first given from box No. 8, about 7 o'clock jfBterdav moiuinjr. The fire department was at nee on the qui vtve, and those engines within tbe l-trict fur which the alrirm was i?lven, were very foon on the ground and at work. The fire proved to be in tbe basement of tbe Merchants' Hotel, situated at tbe corner of Washington and State street. The flames had reached an as cendancy alarming in Use 1 1 before a single stream was piaviDg upon them, and it was deemed advisable to repeat tbe alarm calling forth the enure fire depart ment of the city. In a short time the two great thoroughfares Washington and State sireei9, were throneea with people, and amid the great tonrouKe were running to aud fro steamers. truc ks, and venicieg oi an aescnpiions, crcuung a pertect chaos. The seething, crackling flames were bursting from every window above the vain entrance to the building on State street, and all hope for the salety of the hundred or more occupants seemed to be abandoned. Tbe taircase was one vast hbeetoi flame, and jet there was no help for the terror-tncken p?ople within. Everv wicdow in the large structure was crowded with anxious luces, denoting by their frenzied appearance a firm determination to jump for life should tbe fire reach them and compel their retreat. A few mlnuteB morp, and several engines were at work, tuelr spasmodic pulling and the strenuous cxeitions of the fire wen giving hope to many whom despair had rendu ed almost powerless. iJE ALARM AND STAMTEDE, At this early hour in the morning, it is to be supposed tbat n any of the occupants of the hotel were yet in bed. The breakfast-table had just been surrounded by the boarders, and the tempting viands spread out belore them were being rapidly devoured. A cry of fire lrora toe street below served only to attract attention at first, but when some startled persona in the dining-hall rose liom their seats terrified by the alarm which was repeated by scores of terrified individuals, the intenseet excitement ensued. Servants, with orders yet unfulfilled, came in collision with retreating guests, and every avenue of escape was sought lor by the bewil dered crowd. The dminsr-room is ciiuaced directly over the store of Afeesrs. Rice & Allen, and it is in the Crosby Music Hall buildincr, con necting with the Merchants' Hotel by several - ou tbe south ejoY. From the breukfa-t-dooi. "U6 mothers ran for their children, table anxi. D' Df totaVinaDility to move a muscle or m M. " . "V lable was the condition of more. The presented from the streets was heart re n.Hr tbe extreme. From the wlndo ws of the h.fa u" BKnesof the building, looking down upon i.,B wainor hnnie lar beneath them, were numnr- rous persons who had just arisen lrora tbeir beds, Many ot them being transient guests, ignorant cf the (.ituation. and not knowing which way to turn, looking wildly about them, iruuliring for help. Tbe flames soon enveloped the stairway leadine from the State street entrance, thus cut ting off all means of retreat in tbat direction. The dense smote drove Dark the more daring persons who persisted in getting one by pushing their way through the seething fire, step by tep down the rickety st'isrcase, and then a rush was made for another door. KESCCED AND EPCATED. The greatest exertion was made to tive the inmates of the rooms in the upper stories a better opportunity for escape than was atl'orded by the stairways. By dint of great exertion on the part of the firemen and others, several lad ders were placed against the sides of the build ing, and down tuesc a great many ciaraocrea, thus, doubtless, saving their lives, In a win dow of the fourth story lacing on State street, a xnan was seen in his shirt-s'ieevcs looking into the street, and apparently unable to make auy exertion to escape. He maintained ono posture, that of balancing himself on his hands, as if in the act of leaping. A ladder was procured and raised to the window below him, but at a distance ' from him too great to admit of his reaching it. The greatest anxiety prevailed among ttiose who noticed the leopardy of the man, and many were the suggestions made for the best manner of giving him aid. Finally a rope was thrown over the roof of the building by a fireman, and catching hold of It, the gentleman managed to lower Himself to the first round of the ladder. From this elevation he slowly descended, land ing on terra firma in safety. Mr. James Oram, a member of Hook aid Ladder Company No. 1, with heroic eftort rescued the wife of Dr. Thomas T. Ellis, who must otherwise have perished in the flames. From a third- story window, facing on the alley between the hotel and CrodOy's Opera-House, the noble fpllftW f-nrriPft (ho lurlv In l.in Dim. urirK one hand guiding his way, he made the perilous descent down the ladder. The- lives of two men, wbo were in the rooms on the fourth story, were also saved bv the darlni? wn. a Mr. Hurlbut, commission merchant, who roomed in . one of the highest etorie?, barely escaped with bis life. He was aroused by the strong scent of me suipuurous smote, ana making his way to bis rocm aoor, dashed out and t branch th hall. OT. . Mr. Hurlbut told him to follow, and he did so, but between the intervening flames and clouds of smoke he lost bight oi him. Hushing to the head of tue stairs, Mr. Hurlbut found there a barrier to further eirort to reach the street. Hotulug daunted, he pushed onward through scorching tire and smothering smoke. Recollecting that once upou a time he bad read that to retain one a breath is a preventive of eullocation, ho abided by the Instruction, aud coutinued on his ourse. Once he gloried in long, glossy locks of hair, but now he is singed aud blackened minus his hirsute beauty. Other interesting particulars of the rescue hnd escape of persons there are connected with this great r,onrtu"va tion, and we regret that we have nut space u which to relate them. THB DESTRUCTION. Once under full headway, the Are spread over the entire building, and from every window the flames licked the wans, aartiug lortu lrom the great columns of smoke ascending upward, it was feared at one time that the Opera-House would catchfl fire, the names at limes com uletelv envelounier the eastern portion of it. Iron shutters were brought into requisition and placed on the interior of the windows, so as to Drevent urnUion. as ever and anon it lurid gleam lapping itself about the wall, threatened total destruction in it swuv. Tbroueb the noble conduct of tbe tire brigade, the Opera-Housn was saved, however, and it is believed sustained very little damane. The Art Gallery was not Injured in the slightest aecree, and not a eingle picture was removed from its hang- , lasr. The eastern wall of the Merchants' Hotel is Inclined towards the ODera-House, leaning over the alley in h threatening manner, and props have been placed between the two buildings to prevent its falling. The wuuie interior portion of the building is one PTeat mass Of uVbrtf. the flmn n the Hlth and the lower stories having fallen throueh in maDy places, nuing the stories on the ground floor with a conglomerate desks, beds, and all conceivable articles of con venience and comfort.
