and duty of love and mercy by which it foods
the hungry and ministers to the sick; seoures
the blessing of him who is ready to perish, and
causes the widow's heart to sing for Joy ! Such
is the tangible way In which It cheers, that like
the great and good Ood, Hit lore; and that like

the helper of the needy everywhere! Thank

Some Gratuitous Advice. The season for
Southern fruits has come, and with it Houtheru
productions unlimited. An many persons have
an aversion to direct advice of any kind, we
would make the following propositions: Kat
oranges; the number is unnecessary. Devour
eweet bananas; the quantify Is not important
to any but those who eat and those who sell.
The best place to stand is upon some public
steps, take no particular notice as to whore you
throw the peelings, yei. try to launoh them on
the walk where the crowd pnss along. It will
afford you great amusement to see somebody
try to turn an extempore "somersault," or be
hold the extremities of certain Individuals give
way, and their heads Beck a solid level.
Indetd, it will be a source oi never-ending
enjoyment to see some aged man, whoe onoe
athletic frame has been loosened and crippled
by years, come down and rack his bones upou
the pavement, or to witness some other person,
with head erect, and body carried upright
on dapper legs, give a bounce into the air, and
come down with a shock to all things sur
rounding, and with au eurth'junke Jar to tils
own body. Let all remember, boys, girls, and
persons of ladvanced years, that personally
such an accident is not susceptible of causing
great pleasure.
A Sad Calamity A Lady Accidentally Shot
and Killed. About o'clock this morning a
fatal accident occurred in the vicinity of Front
and Norris streets. It appears that a mad dog
was discovered coining full speed down the
street, by a man named Erwin and a lady
named Mrs. Whltmyer. Mr. Erwin, went Into
the house and got a rifle, and stationed himself
at the opening of a little alley through which
the dog was making his way, aud Mrs. Whit
myer, with an axe, placed herself at an opening
of the fence, in the centre of the alley, to stop
the dog should he attempt to pass through.
The cur came through the alley, stopped before
Mrs. Whltmyer, who slept. ed out, with the axe
uplifted, ready to strike, when Mr. Erwin fired
at the dog as the lady placed herself before it.
Instead ol striking the canine the ball entered
the right side of the lady, just above the hip,
and ppssed entirely through the body. Mrs.
Vv". was taken Into the house, and every etl'ort
was made to aid and relieve her, but all proved
of no avail.'for she expired at 7-10. Mr. Erwin
was arreMed, and is now held at the Eleventh
IHstrlct Station Iluuse, Lieutenant Witoraft.
The Coroner will hold an inquest tbls after
noon at 5 o'clock.

the officer there were found upon him coats,

School's place, and shawls, other clothing, aud
J3 in bills, which had been stolen from Hosen

three demijohns ot liquor. The women were

goods. Alderman Massey committed the
thieves as follows: John Simpson in default of
S2500 bail; Joseph White. ? 1500 bail; William
