THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 1867.
OBITUARY.
Ei. Governor John 8 eld on Roane,
of Arkansas, died on the 8th instant, after a Ions;
illncfB, at nls borne near Pine blurt", Jeirersou
county, in that Htntc. He was elected Governor
of Arkanans on the Democratic ticket In 1848.
lie served In the Mexican war, attaining the
rank of Colonel. During the Kebellion he was
so officer In the Confederate army, and was pro
moted to the rniik ot Br1gndier-Uencra1.
Mr. llenjamln B. YVtflln,
a brother of the late J. II. Willin, the trans
lator ot "lasso," died reccutt.y at Mount l'U-a-nant,
rear VVoburn, HedtortNhire, England.
Mr. Wiflin was well known as a Spanlsu
scholar, his special line of study being the
history of the Reformation in Spam. He
was instrumental in reprinting a number of
the works of the early Spanish reformers, two
of which he edited. Th-ee were the "Epls
tola Coi.solalorls" of Juan Pi-rez, and the
"Alfaiecto Chrtotiano" of Juan do Valdes, the
latter work owing its discovery to him, having
been unknown to bibliographers for over three
centuries until he brought it to light, and
translated it, about six years ago. He wns also
the author of a "Lite of Valdes," contributed
to the late translation of "The Hundred and
Ten Considerations"of that unique writer. Like
his brother, Mr. Within was in his earlier years
a frequent couttibutor to the fugitive poetry of
his day, although he cannot be said to have
been a poet.
The Great Museums of the World.
rrotessor Agassiz, in a letter to the Boston
Transcript, replying to some criticisms made by
a coiresoiidejt ol that paper, says:
In the second place, I am called to account
for having stated that the Jardin des Plautes
and the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cam
bridge aie the only institutions lu the world
where instruction U given in connection with
the collections. I think no one of my hearers
can have failed to understand that I was speak
ing not oi institutions of learning gene
rally, but of great museums. Of course. I am
aware that there are many universities, col
leges, and even high schools, where courses of
lectures are given in connection with col
lections; this is indeed rather the rule thin the
exception in all European schools. But special
collections, intended for instruction, and
, : limited to what is needed for general study,
ought not to be confounded with museums or
ganized with a view to the advancement of
neience, ana destined to educate scientific men.
We have such an elementary collection lor the
use ot the general stuoents within the Museum
itself. Such collections ought to be put up in
our normal and high schools.
But the preat museums of the world, de
voted exclusively to the advancement of science,
such as the Jardin des l'lantes, the British
Museum, the Museum at Leydtn. the Frankfort
Museum, and those of Vienna and St. Petersburg,
are not educational institutions. On ihe other
hand, the great universities, such as Oxford and
Cambridge in England: Paris, Moutpelier,
Ktrasbourg, etc., m Freuce; (ioltiutren, Heidel
burg, Vienna, etc. etc., iu tiermany, arc not
connected with great museums. The museums
at Bei'ltu and Muuich existed there before
the foundation of the Universities
ot tho cities. The same i-s true in
this country. Neither the Smithsonian In
stitution, nor the Academy of Natural Sciences
in Philadelphia, nor the Boston Natural History
Society, hove any provision for Dublic instruc
tion, and I am not aware that any of our col
leges has a flrst-clas museum connected with
it. Mr. I'cabody's liberal donations are no doubt
at this mooient leaning to the erection ot seve
ral, and I trust this discussion will sugeest (he
importance of making our scientific collections
more generally useful for study.
But at oresent this is not the case. The Smith
sonian . Institution in Washington and the
Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge
are the only ones open duily to the pubhc, with
the sole reservation of the time necessary lor
the maintenance ot order aud neatness.
To the great museums enumerated above I
hope the Cambridge Museum will be added as
soon as its treasures can be opened to the
public. Meanwhile I repeat the statement made
considerately in the first instance, that of these
first-class museums, the Jardin des Plantes and
the museum at Cambridge are the only oues
which are organized as educational establish
ments, and whose course of instruction, free of
chaige, is open to the public. L. Aoassiz.
Our Territorial Acquisition.
From the Hvffalo Commercial Advertiser.
There is ieason to believe that the old couplet,
"JNo pent-up Utlca contracts our powers,
But the whole boundless Continent is ours,"
is in a fair way of literal realization by the
United States Government. SiDce we began
our national career there has been pursued by
us a steady policy ot territorial acquisition.
The Idea has come to be a favorite one not only
with each and every Administration, but also
with each and every citizen of the "Universal
Yankee Nation," as we are pleased to can our-
KHlVC4.
The following li-t will show how far we have
nlremiv uone in this direction:
First. The mirchase of Louisiana and the
Mississippi Valley, in 1803, from France, lor
Mn.0uu.ouo.
Second. The purchase of Florida, iu 1819, from
Spain, tor S3,uut).uuu.
Thud. The annexation of Texas in 1845.
Fourth. The purchase of California, New
Mexico, and Utah, lrom Mexico, for $15,000,01)0,
in 1848.
Filth. The purchase of Arizona from Mexico,
fnr $10,000,000. in 1854.
sixth. The ourchase of the immense Russian
possessions, running down on the Pacific Coast
from the North Pole to ufty-t'ojr North lati
tude, ot which line it strikes the British posses-
uniiK.
Without Daubing to take breath after this last
feat ot territorial deglutition, we are already
gravely mecitating the method and propriety of
takms the title ot what little territory there
ia leli on the continent that "iines us," and of
trivinnr tne bird ot Ircedom an opportunity of
Happing his wings over an entire continent
without trespassing upon neighbors. The
Kenute Lad hardly ratnied the treaty with
Kussia, w hen it was anuouneed that Mr. Seward
was negotiating tor the Northwestern British
Professions, to aDt)lv in part payment of our
Alabtima claims, and in Una! settlement of our
old "nity-lour-forty-or-nght" dispute. Simulta
neously we are treated with serious prognos
tications of the speedy late of the new Cana
dian Confederacy, and are gravely told that the
inevitable dusituy ol that country is to be
blended with our own States uuder the Sdirs
and Stripes.
The Musical Powers of the Chinese.
The following interesting particulars have
been received in Euglaud from a gentleman in
Hong Kong, who is engaged in teaching a tonic
sol.tn tinihncr-cluss there:
"I believe this to be almost the first attempt
to teach the reading of music to this wonduiiui
people. The Chinese themselves have no tunes
and no idea of music. Their instruments can
produce but two or three tones, and their sing-
incr is Rcrechincr In talsetto to no kind Ot tune.
The conventional terms of 'high' and 'low' are
uttulv unknown to them. Why, tuey iuk,
should a siirill note be 'up' aud a grave note
oe 'downr' Their voices are tmrsu to a paintui
decree, aud their talent for ilatteuiug wonder
ful. They mast never be asked to po above 1),
and alter hall an horn's sinking lose all com
mand of their voices. They also incline to
bawl." But, notwithstanding all these hin
drances, the experiment seems to be succeeding.
The tonic sol-fa method seeing adaDted lor the
Chinese as well as the English. The writer con
tinues: "If the new tune set before them he an
easy one, It is positively sung the tirst time
without pn error : if a difficult onp. two or three
trials may be required." The class has been
formed into a cuoir lor uuion Church. Dr.
Legge, of the London Missionary Society, had
printed them some tuneB in Chiuese tonic sol-la,
and the result is that 'the service of song is im
proving.' "
The two Abbotts, Jacob and John S. C.
have published about two hundred volumes of
juvenile books.
