This department came und?r the care of th;
Manapers in the year 1853, before which time
it had been conducted by a sf parate organiza
tion, under the name oi the Moyamensiui? Dis
pensary. Up to tho Drrsent date there have
been fil,85l patients prencribed for, and 113,320
prescriptions compounded by the rebideut phy
sician .

and Ollicers Train and Smith arrested last niht
a young man, Thomas Kiley, on the charge of
robbine the cipar store of Mr. Grim, No. 331
Arch street, on Sunday morning. The goods
stolen were recovered.
Mo'lie Conner, alias Hoiran, whose picture
has adorned the Rogues' Gallery for some time,
hails from ht. Loui?, and Is notorious as a female
expert in shoplilting. Yesterday she was cap.
tured in this city, and now occupies one of tho
Central Station cells. She is charged with
entering a store on Eighth street and stealing a
piece of grenadine, valued at $80. Net she
visited a store where a bonnet was lying upon
the counter, , which had been sold to a lady,
wrapped up, and was in front of the purchaser, j
Mollie adroitly slipped the bonnet off the coun
ter, and left with it without interference. Nest
Bhc proceeded to the store from which the piece
ot goods had been tatren, and there she was
caught in the act of rolling up a mantilla. In
formation was sent to Chief Detective Lamon,
who despatched Detective Webb to the store,
and escorted Mollie to the cell above referred
to. She will have a hearing at 2 o'clock to-day.
' Fires. An alarm of fire was given last
evening, about H o'clock, caused by the burning
ol a bay-loit on Geiniautown avenue, near
Franklin street, in the upper part of German
town. Loss $5000, partially insured . Three
valuable horses and two cows were in the lower
part of the structure and were saved. The
two Germantown engines, together with one
from Manayunk, saved tne adjoining property
from being butned.
The alarm of fire last evening was caused
by the burning of a barn tilled with straw and
hay, back of the Darby road, below Gray's
Ferry Bridge. The structure, with its contents,
was totally destroyed. Loss not ascertained.
Cascalties and Hospital Cases. The following-named
persons were yecterday admitted
luto the Pennsylvania Hospital:
Patrick Blaken, with a leg fractured by a bank
of earth falling upon him on the Kidge road.
Charles Chapman, aged thirty-iour, with two
fingers cut off by being caught in machinery at
Ycrree & Mitchell's manufactory.
William Stewart, with three of his toes cut off
by some machinery falling upon his loot from a
dray at Fifth and Locust streets.
John Karron, aged fifteen, with his shoulder
dislocated by tailing at Seventh street and Mar
riott's lane.
Improvements. The work of repairing
Coates street wharf, on the Delaware, aud the
large culvert which pasbCs through it, has been
commenced.
The building on the northwest corner oi
Second and Pine" streets is being removed to
give place to a banking-nouse ior me sixiu
National Bank, now located in Second street,
below Lombard.
Contracts have been made and the work com
menced on seventy-four dwellings, on Seventh
and Franklin streets, between Diamond street
and Susquehanna avenue ; fifty-seven on Park
avenue, between Columbia and Montgomery
i-yenue; and forty on Twentieth street, north
liom Jefferson street.
Historical Society. A meeting of this
Society was held last evening, in their hall,
Atiiena uin Building, southeast corner of Sixth
add Adelphi streets.
Colonel J. Ross Suowden Presided.
A letter was read, having been received from
P. Rodney King, Esq., presenting o the Society
a;, old volume containing the proceedings ot the
Democratic Society of Philadelphia, from June,
1793, to 1794. David Rutenhouse, President,
Casper Coates and David Jackson, Vice
Presidents. , ,
Colonel John S. Warner delivered an address,
taking as a subject the history ol the song, "Star
Spangled Banner ;" and, alter the address , the
eld song was sung, by Ferdinand Durang, with
thrilling eflcct.
The West India Trade. A part of the im
ports at this port last week, from the W est In
dies, was 4300 hogsheads of sugar, 1550 boxes ot
nugar, and 0000 hogsheads ot molasses. This la
the most substantial evideuce of the extensive
commerce which Philadelphia has with the
West Indies.
Something About Sunday Cars. The Judges
of the Supreme Court, before whom the argu
ment in the case ot certain citizens vs. The
Union Passenger Railway Company, in relation
to the running of the cars on Sundays, have
decided kot to give a decision in the case until
next October;
BrsiNEPS at the Hay Market. During the
mitt week 477 loads of hoy and 82 of straw
were weighed and sold at the Farmers' Hay
Market, North 8-veulh street. Best quality
Timothy hay sold at $22 20 per 100 pounds;
mixed at $1-00. Straw sold at $1 '5051 -55 per
100 pounds.

M., March 30, struck upon a Confederate -'ankee-caiclier,"
and noi snagged. By the prompt exertions
ot the oflicers aud crew, aided by the pumps, the schr
was kept alloat, and the hole was plugged aud caulked,
and by 1 A. M. all was considered sate, and the watch
below turned lu; but from some mlstiap or other the
water agalu rushed through the breach, and by 8
o'clock the schr went down in ten feet of water, the
ollicers and men having barely time to get oil', and
losing all their clothing, etc,
