What the French Artiste are Doing,
The adistsof franco aie chiefly eupaced at
present on pictures lor the "Annual and "Uni
versal" exhibitions. Tuo Joriner will contain
new works only, and the latter pictures painted
within the last ten years. There are a number
of excel lent urtiots iu Paris wlioe works are
little known in this country. Levi, Tromentln,
Dm re. Diaz, and Decamps are preat favorites
with the i'f,riiaiic, and it is probable that noire
of their works will reach this city during the
present jer.
(Jerome has many pictures under way, but
nothing liiibthed. Ills 'Christian Martyrs De
livered ti the Wild UcaBts" promises to be his
preatesv worK. Two otber paintings in his studio
are "The Slave Market" one uuue figure in It
something In the style of his "l'liryuee," and
The Ulu Colh Merchant of Cairo
Coiuiite-Calix has lately finished two largo pic
tures. His "Last Ko.-,e of Summer" is lllnstra
tivo of Moore's hong. "Love's Messenger" Is a
bureeshtul picture.
Diellenbach is flnlhing a companion piece to
the lamoiis "-Christen'mir," by Knaws. Meisso
nier hu lust finished his most important pic
ture. It is entitled "The Cavalry Churge," and
represents a body of horsemon chareing on the
enemy. The Parisians are quite excited over it.
He was ottered 150,000 liuncs lor it, but asks
200,000 and he Hill eet it equal to about
$40,000. Tihsot has nearly finished his "Japa
nese Lady," life size ; a most extraordinary
work, but not calculated although only partly
nude for modest Philadelphia, lie is building a
hotel with splendid studios.
Ed. I' rere has sent his latest completed works
to the exhibitions, but has still lott in his studio
a larpo and important work, representing a
crowd of noisy and mischievous boys leaving
school. Another woik is, "Preparing for tho
First Communion."
Duvergi-r has just finished a large picture
called "Tbo Coniirmatian." Tlio iuterior of
church is well depicted, and little girls, ciad in
white nud ;wearing veils, tbeir heads adorned
with flowers, produce a charming effect,
8oyer, Arnonx, Auiray, Seignac. Devaux.
Dansaert, and Mad'lle Bournes, are all engaged
on more or less important works. The younner
Frere has lately built a new studio on the
heights of the vi'lngo occupied by the Ecouen
"colony," near Paris. Johnson and liucou, both
Americans, belong to Ibis colony, audaie doing
well.
Ilazeltinc will be represented in both the
annual and universal exhibitions. The French
artists speak highly of him.
Gustave Dore is immensely busy. Ilia studio
covers two lots, and is filled witb Urge canvases.
He has two other etudios m different parts of
Paris.
A Novel Entertainment.
The JPalt Mali Gazette describe a new enter
tainment in London:
"An ingenious German is just now showing
at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, what wonders
can be wrought by putting your lace into
training, and by a scientific arrangement ot
lights and shadows. He may have been more
favored by nature in respect ot certain facial
lines than the generality of men, but he has
evidently seconded nature by assiduous em
ployment of art. Such perfoct mastery over
his face has he established that he appear also
to be several tingle gentlmen, as unlike one
another as possible, rolled into ono. The en
tertainment is divided into four parts. When
the curtain first rises there is 'discovered' a
stage w hereon is a long table, on cither end of
which is creeled a sort of rampart; on each
rampart is a candlctuiCK of five branches: in the
end of each branch is a lighted candle; on each
of two side shelves are three more lighted can
dles; and behind each rampart it concealed
what the entertainer could explain better than
anybody else.
On mo centre ot the table, between the two
ramparts, ia a small mirror, with ita back:
towards the spectators, and on each side of the
mirror 18 movable Ras jet, shaded from the
spectators by what looks like a piece ol tin in
the shape ot an oyster shell. Of these jets the
entertainer wakes mucn use in ugnwn up uis
contortions ot lace. From the centre of the
table alto springs up from time to time a screen,
bemud which the entertainer hides himself
whilst be makes Eucta alterations in his dress and
identity m he considers necessary or boconiug.
His entertainment is interspersed with a kind
of lecture. In which there is no little humor,
rendered more piquant and sometimes more
unintelligible than it would otherwise be by the
entertaine r's quiet, occasionally almost puritani
cal, manner and foreign pronunciation oi our lan
guage. 'The first part of the entertaiment consists of a
representation, by means merely of masterly
command over the lace, a black- coat, and a
white waistcoat of about twelve different types
of men, to wit, the melancholia, the 'sansuini
ous,' the choleric, the sanctimonious (in which
the performer is eminently successtul), the
cynical, the proud tin which the periormer
seems to have taken for his model ttiu super
cilious waiter at a railway hotel), the humble,
the learned, the simpleton, the misanthrope, or
man-eater,' and the genial. The entertainer
concludes this part by a display of tuch power
over bis lace as to lead to the hypothesis
already made that ho would take it oif as easily
as he would fate off his hat. The second part
is devoted to the beard (the term including all
hair worn on the face): aud the mauner in
which by meaii9 of. shadows only the 'manly
growth' is imitated is particularly clever."
Marriage by Clog and Shoe. 4i
A correspondent of Jvotes and Queries writes:
"In the registers of the church at Hawortb,
In Yorkshire, now fatuous as the place where
Miss Bronte, 'Currer Hell,' lived and died, and
also remarkable for the wonderful assurance
with whioti its InhubUants, past aud present,
have asherted Its church to have been lounded
in the year 600, there occurs an entry Kevins a
list of 'marrlafre9 at Bradford, and by clog and
boe In Lanciibhire, but paid the minister of
Haworth' the lees mentioned. This ia in the
jear 1733. Haworth is not lar from the border
of Lancashire. What is the meaninfr of 'mar
riatres by clog and eboe in Lancashire?' In some
parts oi the West Iiiding it is customary to
throw old shoes aud old bliopers after the
newly married pair when starting on the wed
ding tour. A few weeks afjo I was present at a
marriage on the banks of the river Holme, at
which London, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales
were well represented, when nearly all present
took psrt in the practice. The moment the car
riage which contained tbe bride and bridegroom,
and which was drawn by four splendid greys,
began to move off. a score or more shoes and
slippers were seen flying after it. The custom is
said to be expressive of good luck and prosperity
to the newly married couple. Wnat is the origin
of it? Id the forest of Bhlpton, a lew miles
north of Haworth, matrimony was subject to a
singular toll In the reign of Edward II. It was
ordained 'that every bride coming that way
should either give her left shoe or 3s. Ad. to the
forester of Crookryse bv way of custom or gavt
cloys.' Has this and the preceding custom any
connection with that ol c'.og and shoe?"
The other dayRosinl and Verdi went to
gether to tbe El Dorado calu concert in Paris
to hear the tragedienne Cornelie. ' '
Miss Laura Harris will shortly reanni-ar at
