8 Tl Verdict In the Oottlelb William Case To the Editor of ITie Evening Tclryraph: I, lii common with a great many other persons, feci Try ronch troubled about the verdict rendered in the case of Oottleib Williarus; and without designing to make any ill-natured re flections upon the jury who found hira guilty (who were, I am informed, all highly respec table and intelligent men), I must say that a majority of persons, members of the bar, physicians, and others, with whom I have conversed, feel that the evidence against him was not sufficiently conclusive to warrant a onvktion. . Living in tho house and having harge of a paralyzed person, knowing how unable ehe is to undress herself, and do the smallest act which requires strength, and that a push from an infant will cause her to fall (although not half so badly alllicted as "Williams), 1 am thoroughly convinced that it would have been quite impossible for him to have done this murder. Amongst the evidence brought forward as indicating a guilty and remorseful conscience, is that on the day of the murder lie took a narcotic, with the view of ending his life. Witnesses proved that they heard him say that "he was weary of life, and intended com mitting suicide." All who know anything of paralyzed persons know, also, that even those most comfortably situated, those whose means are large, who have loving friends, careful attendance, the best medical advice, are con tinually longing for death, and are often tempted to end the life of enforcod inac tivity and weariness by suicide. (Jottleib Williams was a poor, homeless wanderer, sub sisting on the charity of a brother not well able to'bear the burden of his support, quite unable from his disease to provide a living for himself, looking forward only to a lite of penury and misery. What wonder, then, that upon the approach of a day so fraught with painful associations as a birthday to those of middle life (however comfortably surrounded) must always be, he should have resolved never to see another anniversary so full of sorrowful remcm Irances T I have seen Williams and talked with him in his cell, and have heard from him that for two years' lie has been totally paralyzed on one side, and partially so on the other, and tliat for the first year after the strokes (he has had two) was entirely helpless and confined to his bed. His left side is devoid of feeling and motion, shrunken and limp as a rag, and his right also bears the same appearance, in a less degree. He seems scarcely to realize what his conviction involves, and has the man ner of one wholly overcome with astonish ment at the conclusion to which the jury arrived. He thinks that the evidence cer tainly was insufficient for his conviction, and that his previous bad name did the business for him. He is shrewd and intelligent, calmly reviews the whole testimony, points out discrepancies which he thinks the jury could not have con sidered at all, speaks of the entire absence of any motive he could have had for such a deed, says Mrs. Miller was always particularly kind to him, wonders how any one who could commit a murder for the sake of plunder would stoop to take off the large and swollen joints of tho finger a ring comparatively worthless, and leave a purse containing several dollars lying untouched (as the evidence shows) close at hand. This, too, when the doors might have been closed and locked, and , the house ran sacked at leisure. He does not seem angry with the witnesses, but thinks they testiiied to what they believed to be the truth, although they were mistaken in the day, they having seen him on Tuesday, instead of Wednesday morning, enter the alley leading to the house. However this may be, I, for one, believe him innocent, and feel that it will be terrible heyond expression to execute him for the murder. D. D. R. AMUSEMENTS. Concert of the Mendelssohn Society-. A iarije and brilliant audience assembled in ino Musical Fund Hall, on Saturday evening last, on the occasion of the ooncert of the Men delSHuhn Society. The Society numbered up wards of two hundred aud fllty voices, and the ellect of the various choruses given during the evening was sublime In the extreme. The iloth Psalm of Mendelssohn was per formed with the greatest spirit and ellect, una to the great delight of the discriminating audi ence. The splendid duo at the beginning of it, "In His Hands are all the Corners of the Earth," was sung witU the deepest fervor and feeliug toy Miss Cuuulnglou and Miss Forbes, Miss Cunnington's rich soprano fairly revelling In the beautiful music of her part of It. Mr. Bishop's solo, "Come, let us worsbip,"was sung In good taste and wuu proper emphasis, ana the grand choruses "Come let us sing," "The Sea is His," and "The Lord is a Great God" were magnificently rendered. In fact, the whole work was disposed of In a manner that showed the careful rehearsal that had been given to ll.aud the talent of those engaged In its performance. The duett "Sweet Tears," In the second part of the Concert, by Mrs. Behreosand Miss Oorm ley, was a delicious rendering of one of the most beautiful efforts of Pacini. It whs raptu rously encored. Miss Black burne's clear, ringing noprauo and excellent method were very advantageously displayed in Kosslui'g "La Charite," which was admirably executed. The pianoforte playint? of Mr. Henry O. Thunder, in the Fantasia of Beethoven, was artistic In the highest degree, and the dlmculties of the part were surmounted with all the ease and grace of the finished executant. Mr. Thunder has evi dently studied Beethoven deoply, as his inter pretation of the Fantasia was the most finished and satisfactory we have ever heard iu this fountry. The warmth, brilliancy, and dash of is execution were prominent features iu the production of the work, and his effort uenerally was such as to win the unqualified approbation of all who heard it. The chorus of the Fantasia was also effectively rendered, and the solos were likewise com jnendably given. Mr. Jean Louis, the Directorof the Society, led on the occasion, and ucquttted himself grace fully and In every way satisfactorily. The concert, altogether, was one of the best of the season, aud lias added, we think, another laurel to the wreath of suceei-sos already won by the Mendelssohn. Italian Opera.
