front street, upon the open channel of the
Cobocksink creek (Canal street), to Laurel
street, thence on Laurel street to the Delaware
river; one on Midlin street and Montgomery
avenue, from old Camao street to Sixth street,
on the open channel of the Cohocksink creek;
onp on Ninth street, from Berks to Noms, ou
Morris to Eleventh, on Eleventh to Diamond,
on Diamond to Twelfth, on Twelfth to Dau
phin, and ou Dauphin to Sixteenth; one
on Ellsworth and Twenty-tilth, streets,
from the river Schuylkill to Federal street,
thence on Federal to Eighteenth street;
one on Norris, lrom Ninth to Memphis: on

The ordinance provides that after the plans
and specifications are prepared tor these cul
verts, sealed proposals for the construction of
the same shall be advertised for, and that the
contracts tor the same shall be awarded to the
lowest bidder.
Improvements in tuk City Limits. One hun
dred and sixteen permits for buildir.g and itn-
? roving property were issued from the Building
nspectors'otlice during the present month. A
handsome buildim: is to be put up oo the north
uide of Chesnut street, above Sixteenth, which
is to be 24.J feet front and 80 feet deep; also, one
on the south side of Spring Garden street,
below Broad, to be 20 feet front and 75 feet deep.
One of the largest stone houses 1h the city is to
erected on the north side ot Arch strept, above
Third, which is to cover the whole of the lot
of ground now vacant. Rev. D. D. Lyden, a
resident of (iermautown, has taken out a permit
lor the erection ot a dwelling and school-house,
at Evans and llaucock streets, to be 137 by 3G
feet; also lor the erection ot a school-bouso at
Centre aud Evans streets, 44 by 74 feet. An
addition of 3 by 114 feet is to be made to the
factory at Maschor aud Putnam streets: and a
shop, 37 by 100 feet, three stories high, is to be
put up on the sitp of one recently destroyed by
tire, at the northeast corner of Twelfth and
Brown streets. A handsome school-building,
90 by 6a ftet, is to be put up on Ludlow street,
east ot Thirty-sixth, in West Philadelphia.
Carpenter sweet, from Fifteenth to Sixteenth,
and in the rear on Morton strest for the same
distance, is to be entirely built ud. On Ells
worth street, west of Twentieth, thirty bouses
are going up, and on the same street, between
Eleventh and Twelith streets, an entire lowof
nent dwollings is to be erected. Alarse num
ber of buildings are to be built on Fifteenth,
Sixteenth, and Wharton streets.
It would be well, in this connection, to state
that the ordinance directing all persons erect
ing buildings within the city limits, to have
means provided to carry the refuse from the
houses into the sewers, is being carried into ef
fect. Tho Chief Engineer and Surveyor is now
preparing to appoint twelve licensed agents, to
tie distributed over the city, under whose
especial charge all sewer connections will
hereafter be made, thus preventing the imper
fect work aud consequent inconvenience and
damage to property which, in many case?,
heretofore occurred. The Surveyor iu each
district will also have especial supervision of
the work, and keep a record ot each sswer con
nection. A Large Convention. The 2(!tli of April
has been declared by the Urand Sire of Odd
Fellowship iu the United States a day of special
thanksgiving and prayer, in recognition of the
preservation of the Order during' the late war,
and its reunion after nonce. LVlceatcs from
sixty city lodges met at Sixth and Haines steets
last evening, to prepare lor the ceremonies in
Philadelphia. James Bincham. Jr.. of No. 127.
presided, and Christian Younc. of No. 3:1. w
i leoted Secretary, to prenure a detailed plan of
xnanKsgivine service, anu report to the Cooven
tion. R. Alexander West, of No. 188. Samuel N.
Foster, ol No. 190, A. C. Fite. of No. 15. John t.
Server, of No. 4, and M. Ernst, of No. 6, were
appointed a committee. This coiriniittee will
report on Saturday week, to which date the
Convention adjourned.
The Temperance Movement. A meeting of
members of the Anti-Liquor League was held
last eveniner, in the upper story of the building
at the northeast corner of Tenth and Chesnut
streets. Mr. Andrewson was called to the chair.
A number of BDeeches wpre made upon the
evils of intern oerance. Five delegates were
annotated to attend a convention to be held on
next Monday evening, at the same place, tor the
purpose of perfecting the arrangements lor a
gcueiai mass meeting.
Committee on Fire and Tbcst. The Com
mltteeon Fire and Trust met last evening and
Instructed tho Chairman to prepare an ordinance
prohibiting flre companies in West Philadelphia
from runninir to fires on this side of the Schuyl
kill, unless signalled for by Chief Engineer
Lyle. The Committee also desired to inquire
into recent firemen's riots, but no witnesses
appeared, and the Committee adjourned without
action.

very creditable, nnd was well appreciated by the
spectators.
