A Ureailful Story.
A l.iy or two ago wo copied a statement
from tlie London l.antt concerning 'the dan
gers of wearing chignon. Tin; following lias
jtince Appeared in the London Trlrymph it
professes to be the description of an actual
experiment:
"I purchased at a tnnliionablf hair-dresner's h
thViion ot very clabortte atipcarunce, ami mib
mlttod part of it to examination under a power
microncopp. r'wm iu" ma of batr compo
sing the cliicnon 1 selected lor experiment about
one hundred and tifty haire, and commciiced bv
CHiotnllv clestisimr tliem irom trrcuHO and othyr
Impurities In a tepid solution ot pota-di, and
ilrvim: tliem in a current of heated air. Upon
bubniitting them to examination by a moderate
power, I tound the hair, wniiti wan of a dark
brown color and fine texture, perfectly clean
and free trom any parasitical appendages, until
within half an inch ot what was evidently the
natural end of the tiair, when a multitude of
small (larlt knot? or protuberances on the outer
corticle weie visible. Upon carefully d .-taehinu'
Mime of these, and placmjr them on an obieci
jrlaso, under much higher power, it was Imme
diately evident thai Miev were innumerable
hpeciiiieiiB of the (.o-cnlled ymtw.).
As nearly in I could estimate, half an inch
ot a Meirie hair would yield over a llKnu.ind ot
thre dii!fusrinjr epizoa in their embryo con li
tioil. and" enveloped in Bfrliitino;m sub-tai.ee,
Jlav'ins thus Hiitisticd myself ot their existence,
I lieit pniceefte I to astortain if they wen po-.-f-esi-Pd
pt vitality. It is well known that icentle
and continued heat aUtrcls the must lavur ible
conditions tor the development of this chus ot
iusi'Ct hie, I therefore placed about ud)2'ii
ends of the hair between two piece of l'!t
slightly oiled, awl submitted it to a moist heat
of one hundred and twenty decrees lor six
hours; and also bound upon ttie neck of u com
mon hen a convenient place bavintr b"i n care
fully shaved lor the purpose a number of luiir
entls, and placed the bird in frout of the stove
ior about the same time.
k'At the end of this period the srrearines
which had been placed in hit were care
fully examined. They had undergone ureat
development, and more than a score sho.ved
unmistakable sie'is of lite. But on remot-im;
the hairs from the neck of the hen and placing
them tinder the microscope, a moit exua.ir
dinary chHtife in the ova appeared to have talcu
place. The hairs were swarming with the
released epizoa: m arly all, indeed, were m rc
or less detached troin the envelope, and pre
sented many of the unmistakable peculiarities
of the e dieulus humant capitis. In many the
mouth was lurnihed with a proboscis, the an
tannic as lomr a-i the thorax, and the depressed
segments of the abdomen were clearly visible.
'It was abundantly evident that no process
to which the hair had as jet been submitted
had even impaired, much lcs destroyed, the
vitality of the erctrarities. I cannot venture to
trespass upon jour space by pivine a detailed
account of the experiment:; made to ascertain
how this vitality could be destroyed; sulliee it
to say that steepimi in boiling water, and ex
posure to a dry heat of :!C0 degrees Kahretiueit,
totally failed to do so. The compound ethers,
benzole, and the bi-chlori.de of mercury de
stroyed t hem completely, as also some of the
mineral bcUIb; but most of these would of course
render the hair worthless to the cbisnou-oiaker,
the beauty of its appearance beiug entirely
destroyed. I regard these experiments as fully
demonstrating the fact that mauy ladies are
wearing, perfectly unsusDecW, upon their
headB the terms of an insect life which may at
any moment spring into a vitality that would
prove distreKsine beyond measure, and be by
no means easy to eradicate, ihese hornole
infects multiplying with almost inconceivable
rapidity, and their generation being governed
by no well-ascertained law."
A writer in the London llt-.c'uw discusses the
whole subject of chignons iiMjiiiring, at the
outset, "Why do ladies wear chignons? Do
men fall in love with chignons? Do au Ish
gouian and a Cockney share in this extra
ordinary sentiment, and both lay their hearts
jit the back of their respective Juliet's head!1"
and citing Du Chaillu'.s new book to show
that the belles of equatorial Africa wear chig
nons not at all unlike, what may be seen any
day in Regent street. The dille reuce, how
ever, between the Ishago and the English lady
is that the former manufactures the chignon
out of her own hair and head, while the latter
buys it ready-made in the shops."
Then the writer quotog the. story we hav
copied above, and derides it, remarking thus:
"The eregaruies are possibly Lot animals ai
all, and may be a comparatively haniik'-s
though disgusting vegetable lorma'ion. They
are not 'epizoa,' ami they never develop two
iiediculi. Jn tact, pediculi are never found in
lead hair. Then, asain, artificial hair forth?
most part conies from Prance and (lermaiiv
mid not trom the 'liltby Burhues.' However,
we need not dwell on tins part of the subject
What the ladies will say on the matter it is not
easy to conjecture. It is not improb ible th i
they will stick to the chignons tbroueh 20 . d
and evil report. Tuey are not deterred ty
tnnes from what tney nave ouce tauen a lam-y
to. und if'vou want to condim a woman in her
attachmeut to anything, you have only to abu e
it; it she only had a slight repar 1 tor it uetore,
the will then love it with a positive enthusiasm
which might be mistaken for obstinacy, but
which is simply a touch of genuine tema'.e
nature.
"huplish ladies are glorious martyrs to cus
tom, and have often before stood boldly up
against the innovations of science. If they ouce
take it into their heads that chitrnons will ad
them in procuring husbands, the imaginary
sregariues will be regarded as nothing. Chig-
11011B are rustic anu ransian. cuisnons are
borrowed directly from French dames, whose
patrons are in the jockey clubs. Chignons da
rive a certain charm ot innocent naughtiness
Irom their very origin. Chignons enable l&dies
to appear on an equaliiy with each other, whether
.Nature tiaa oeeu scauty or protu9e to them
The chignon is another weapon added to th.i
captivating armory. Between dyes and chig
non, pads and pulls, the figure and face will be
irresistibly prepaiea ior conquest.
"It those embellishments are multiplied
further, we shall arrive at a situation not dis
similar to that which is prophesied as the result
of continued advances in the science of war.
A time must come wuen notumg more can be
done; wheu Art shall be satistied with her work
ill on tne icmaie uiuui i, mm uxoresB Der 1 nu
bility to improve it by a single additional
cushion. Then we sballjhave the millennium of
fashion, and perhaps a return to primitive
simplicity. When the force of attraction are
on all sides equal, competition must cease,
Chignons and contours, when universal, must
defeat their own obiect. iust like long-shootin?
cannon and Creek tire. Pome other nove'tv
may then, of course, be started; but there may
oe an end to tne comDinations 01 muunery,
aud chignonism cannot be inexhaustible.
Perhaps the costume of Dr. Walker may be
that of the future. If our professions are to
be invaded, why not our frarments If we are
left our pal elot in pence, however, we may
leave mo lau ies tneir chignons."
Mr. Bryant in Spain.
The Corremondmcia tie Esmna of Madrid
thus pleasantly noticed, recently, Mr, Bryant's
presence lu mo jjnuiBu capital
"At the Exhibition of the Pine Arts has been
seen lately William Cullen Bryant, the first
lyric poet of the United States, it is nine years
since this indetBtieaoie traveller was in Spain,
md his second vlbit proves that he has not for-
L'Otten the tokens of esteem with which be was
received by our most distinguished men of

"Bryant has completed his seventy-second
year, notwithstanding which, under his loug
while beard, his I'entnrc reveal fire at. vit, lnv,
arid his firm and active scp ha the elasticity
and energy of yontn. Bryant, like Qiinitjim,
appear destined to the l ingular good tortune
of sec inn his brows wreathed with the cro-vn
which only posterity bestows upon true genius.
He has left this place tor Rome, whence he will
return to his country in tlie summer. May he
yet for the third time'be seen in ftpain by those
who admire him tor his beautiful verses and
love him for his patriarchal virtue."
